Maintenance
General
General maintenance consists of protecting electric equipment and cabling against dust, moisture, cold
and heat. Do not leave cabinet- and panel doors open and exercise concern and caution.
The electric control system can be divided into two main groups (Hardware and Software)
Hardware is all electric equipment of which the control system consists of. The maintenance consists of:
Hardware
NOTE:
Earth faults or short circuit can lead to total stoppage of the crane.
Software is all programs loaded. The crane is dependent of the programs being constantly running, and
that the transmissions of signals are not intruded. A fault in a program will either lead to a stop in
Software
program routines or wrong logical function. Fault could also be indicated by an "ERROR" - indication at
the PLC CPU/Power module.
NOTE:
Software modification/re- programming requires special training and authorisation from NOV
Electrical
Parts
Check electrical parts and cables for damage or malfunction. Rectify or replace if necessary.
Terminal Boxes and
Connection System
Accuracy and carefulness must be performed during connections in the terminal boxes by tightening the
couplings adequately without exaggerated use of force.
The terminal boxes are to be kept internally clean and the gaskets must be intact and whole and have
the right fitness for a proper tightness.
It is recommended that all repair work is performed by NOV, for the aspects of warranty related
requirements.
Condition Check
of Wear Parts
Check and retighten terminal points for cables after the initial 100 working hours and then once every
year. Perform lamp tests and replace lamps, fuses and batteries as necessary.
Crane Control
System
NOVs service personnel should check the crane control system every second year. This also includes
re-calibration of load cells, pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, angle transmitters and flow
transmitters.
The motors have greased bearings. The lubrication points are located in each end of the motor. Follow
Electric
Motors
the periodic maintenance schedule. Ensure that the motor has sufficient cooling and that the still stand
heating is functioning. Ensure that motor is not subject to oil- or water leaks. Ref. the Lubrication Chart in
Drawings & Parts Lists
Rings
The slip ring unit has grease nipples. Lubricate approximately every 2000 operating hours.

2 HANDLING
The Crane is normally shipped in three parts, i.e. the pedestal adapter, crane excl.
pedestal, and accessories, i.e. slew bearing bolts, nuts, washers etc.
The various Transports and lifting arrangements for the parts are shown on the attached
project transport drawings.
Depending on the freight agreement and conditions NOV delivers various steel
structures that the main parts are cradled in on delivery.
The project related “Transport and Lifting Arrangement drawing” for the Crane is shown
in the last chapter “Attachments”, in this procedure.
After landing the Crane on the Transport Vessel the slew bearing bolts must be inserted
in the inner ring and torqued properly for the sea transport.
The Crane and the booms have several sea fastening points that needs to be secured
with wire or soft slings before departure.

1 GENERAL
1.1 Drawings
Before attempting to install the Crane, please study the following project drawings:
The Pedestal Adapter is transported in an upright position and should be handled likewise.
Use lifting straps as shown on Transport and Lifting Arrangement drawing.
Remove transport brackets in the bottom only, and lift the Pedestal Adapter above the
Pedestal column on the ship.
Orient the Pedestal Adapter according to Interface Pedestal drawing and weld it to the ships
column.
It is important that all welding has been completed some days before the Slew Bearing support
flange is measured for flatness, to be sure all welding stresses has been released.
Before installation of the Crane starts the flatness and the bolt circle diameter of the Slew
Bearing support flange must be checked and verified.
Measurement data for Slew Bearing support flange has to be noted on the attached sheets in
this procedure and faxed to National Oilwell Varco for verification and go-ahead clearance.
Clean the machined surfaces with white spirit or equal and check that the flange is free from
debris and damage before preceding the installation.
Any possible required machining work on the Pedestal Adapter is the responsibility of
the shipyard or customer.

Revision 0
This operation can be done in two different ways, the King alone or with the Booms assembly
already installed on the King.
Verify that lifting slings and shackles are correct placed, according to desired lifting operation,
ref Transport & Lifting Arrangement Crane.
Prepare Slew Bearing Bolts, and hardened Washers for mounting of King to Pedestal. Only
bolts and hardened Washers of the type indicated in mechanical parts list can be used.
Lightly lubricate all threaded parts before assembly, using specified grease.
The unhardened zone between the beginning and end of the hardened region of the raceway
is identified by a punched-in letter “S” near the type plate or filler plug at the inner or outer
diameter of each bearing ring. On the ring with a point load the hardness gap “S” should be
positioned outside the main load-carrying areas.
Lift the Crane above the Pedestal and lower it close to the Slew Bearing support flange. This
is a critical step, which requires precision, as the slip-ring and motors, mounted underneath
the king’s bottom plate must not be damaged during the lift.
The inner ring of the Slew Bearing must match with the bolt holes in the Slew Bearing
support flange.
It is important that the Cylinder brackets on the King points in the direction at which the Boom
is best oriented during installation, because the King cannot easily be rotated once it is bolted
to the Pedestal (Crane has to be started to do so).
Lower the Crane onto the Pedestal and insert the Slew Bearing bolts through the Pedestal
flange into the slew bearing. Hand tight each bolt before entering washers and nuts. The bolt
holes in flange and bearing shall match so all bolts enters freely through the holes and
without great resistance when rotated. Assemble all connections, and make up hand-tight
before installing Tensioning tool.
Tighten bolts according to procedure in chapter 1.4 with the Tensioning tool.
Pull cables into Slip Ring Unit and connect in J/B’s follow Electrical-wiring diagram.
Mount the Access Ladder to the Cabin platform if applicable (if removed).
Preload each bolt to 50% of specified value, working in sequence, and pulling every other
bolt diagonally opposite. Mark each bolt for identification. Continue in the same manner, but
tension up to a 100% preload. Mark each bolt for 100% preload.
Document number V3054-Z-KA-003
Revision 0
Check 10% of all bolts for correct 100% preload. If any of the 10% checked bolts
have dropped below the 100% preload, tension these to correct value, and continue
checking all bolts to ensure correct preload. Mark all bolts for correct settings when
checking.
1.5 Booms
Before the installation of the booms starts, remove the transport brackets and lower and secure
the cylinder in rear part so it will not interfere with the installation of the boom. Lift the boom off
the deck and apply a layer (2-3 mm thick) of grease type Kluber Staburax 12K (no solid
additives) on the bearing sides and bearing housing and inside the seal ring. This grease will
protect the boom bearing from being exposed to moisture/pollution once the installation is
finished.
Lift the Main boom close to the Boom pivot points on top of King. Make sure that seal rings and
bearings are properly positioned in their respective grooves. The clearance between the boom
bearing sides and the lugs on the King is 2 mm on each side.
Use two 0.5mm plates to guide the Boom into position between the King lugs.
Insert Main Boom Bolts through King and Boom lugs.
Apply grease type Kluber Staburax 12K (no solid additives) to ease the mounting of the bolt.
Carefully knock with a sledgehammer to insert the bolts, there should bee nearly no resistance if
boom is parallel and properly positioned.
Tensioning torque’s for Lid fixing bolts is noted on the standard Assembly Drawing.
Remove Cylinder bolts in the cylinder brackets on King. Lift the Cylinder end one at a time,
against the cylinder brackets on the King using chain hoists. Raise the boom so that the cylinder
bearing(s) aligns with the cylinder bracket(s) on the king. Insert and secure the cylinder bolts
according to Mounting drawing M0002
In some cases the Booms are transported together as one assembly and can be lifted on as
one unit. The procedures above will bee more or less the same.
When the booms are delivered as two separate units, follow the below procedure for installation
of the Knuckle boom.
Document number V3054-Z-KA-003
Revision 0
The Knuckle boom is placed belly –up in its transport brackets. Hook the Knuckle boom in its
lifting lugs and lift it onto the Main boom connecting ear plates.
When the connection between the booms is finished, and the Boom bolts is secured, lower
Knuckle boom tip to vertical position.
Lower Knuckle boom cylinders down from Main boom, into the Cylinder brackets and insert and
secure the Cylinder bolts.
Connect all of the disconnected hydraulic hoses between King and Booms. Both ends of the
hoses are marked with corresponding numbers for correct mounting. See Hydraulic Flow
Diagrams for details.
Connect all the disconnected Electrical cables between King/ Pedestal and King/ Main Boom.
Both ends of the cables are marked with corresponding numbers for correct mounting.
Connect the customer delivered interface cables to the Slip ring unit
When all the Crane’s wiring and hydraulic piping are connected, the electric motors can be
connected to the platform power supply.
See Electrical Termination diagram for details.
