DESCRIPTION

The SSW-40 spinner frames are made of high quality,
heat-treated and tested steel castings to meet the high
demands and satisfy the strong safety requirements.

Bellow Assembly
The bellow assembly, consisting of the bellow and the

is necessary to receive the required torque moment.
Therewith, the SSW-40 operates like a clamp.

DESCRIPTION

Roller Assembly and gearing mechanism

This assembly allows the user to grip and spin pipes Fig. 8: Gearing mechanism with rollers
of different sizes, ensuring a safe hold and spin while
minimizing the possibility of damage to the pipe. The
turning moment is transmitted by a gearing mechanism,
which consists of gears, bearings and feather keys. The
Transmission transmit a generated turning moment from
the air motor to the rollers.

Fig. 9: Rollers

Adjustable Handle
The adjustment screw allows the variation between
different pipe sizes (3.1/2” to 9.1/2”). Therefore, the handle
only has to be pulled out and expanded. A rotation
clockwise or anticlockwise change the working range of
the SSW-40.

Air motor assembly

The air motor generate a specific speed and turning
moment. The air motor assembly consists of two identically
constructed air motors. Both of them are connected
parallel and operate at the same time, so that the roller
assembly in the left and the right frame are activated
simultaneous. Fig. 11: Air motor
A directional valve controls the direction and a throttle
valve the speed of the air motor.

Fig. 12: Directional valve

Snub Line Sensor

This pneumatic-operated sensor will detect the presence y
of tension in the snub line of a pipe spinner. If no tension
is detected, the pipe spinner will work with a reduced
rotating speed to prevent the spinner to kick. Additionally,
this sensor will prevent the spinner from swinging if the
spinner direction is inadvertently reversed. Once tension on
the snub line is detected, the tool will allow full rotating
speed. The sensor is designed with a safety factor of 3.00,
per the latest edition of API 7K, and is compatible with all
makes of pneumatic pipe spinners.

Installing the SSW-40 to working area

1. Position the SSW-40 on a level, supporting surface
(i.e. Rig Floor). Connect the hanger line, which is
attached at an adequate position at a derrick's cross
member, with the hanger assembly at the lifting
cylinder q. The higher up the hanger line is, the easier
it will be to maneuver the SSW-40 to its desired
location. FORUM Handling Tools recommend the use q
of a 1/2" to 5/8" hanger line and a distance of 2' to 3'
from the pipe centerline. This will allow an easy free
swing around the drill-hole. Position the lift cylinder at
the midpoint of its stroke and 5’ from the floor. This
will give a variance of 12” up or down the pipe.
Lift the SSW-40 slowly to the nearly final working
height w.

CAUTION NEVER stand beneath or in the swing-area

of lifted loads or loads suspended from a crane. w

Time of Cleaning
Clean contamination from the SSW-40 regularly. The
machine should be cleaned thoroughly at the end of each

7 Storage / Disposal
This chapter deals with procedures to be taken to the
storage after the decommissioning of the SSW-40. The
aim is to protect the machine, the environment and
people from damages. Therefore FORUM Handling Tools
recommends to read and implement the following
procedure accurately.

7.1 Storage of the entire device

Storage procedure
1. Clean the Safety Spinning Wrench. FORUM Handling Tools recommends
the use of a high pressure cleaner.
2. Store the machine on a pallet located on an even, supporting surface.
Observe the weight specifications in the technical data.
3. Ensure that the machine is stored so that no one can be injured by
moving parts or sharp edges.
4. Secure the machine with tensioning cables or in another manner to
prevent it from slipping or tipping when moved.
5. Grease the Safety Spinning Wrench as described in chapter “Lubrication”.
6. Conserve all not painted metal surfaces. FORUM Handling Tools
recommends the use of a lubricant or Tectyl.
»» These surfaces should be checked periodically to be sure that no corrosion
has occurred.
7. Protect the machine against water penetration with a plastic tarp.
8. If stored for more than three months, bleed the pneumatic lines.

Intermediate Storage
• Apply lubricant to all bare surfaces
• Protect all other bare surfaces with Tectyl Type 864 or an
Protection of tools equivalent agent.
