I. CONCEPT NOTE
2. LIPIDS - The term “lipid” come from the Greek word LIPOS which means FAT.
- These are a family of biomolecules having varied structures.
- They have hydrophilic property or water- fearing.
Examples : fat and oil
Types of Lipids
1. Triglyceride or Fats - They are composed of 95% of fat in the food we eat.
-They are commonly found in fried foods, vegetable oil, butter, cheese, etc. 2.
Phospholipids - These contains glycerol, two fatty acids, and phosphate
group.
- These make up cell membranes and lipid carrier molecules.
3. Sterols - These are found in tissues of animals and plants. The most
well-known sterol in our body is cholesterol.
3. PROTEINS – These are the most abundant organic compounds in living
organisms responsible for as much as 15 % of the body’s dry weight. It is the basic
building block of amino acids.
Examples:
a. Keratin - It is a structural protein found in hair, skin, and nails.
b. Fibroin/ Silk Protein – It is one of the strongest natural fibers that have high resistance to
deformation. c. Collagen- It is an insoluble fibrous protein found in connective tissues such as
tendons, ligaments, skin, . cartilage and the corea of the eye.
d. Myoglobin - It stores oxygen in muscles.
e. Hemoglobin – It carries oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream.
