Lipids

By: Cameron F., Noah R., Nathan K., and Malachi H.

What is a lipid
A lipid is a group of naturally occurring molecules that include: fats,
waxes, oils, cell membrane, etc. lipids are related to each other by
their solubility in nonpolar compounds. They are commonly found in
fried foods, vegetable oil, butter, whole milk, cheese, cream cheese,
and some meats.

There are three types of lipids: triglycerides, phospholipids, and

steroids. Triglycerides are the typical fats found in your body. High
triglycerides may cause many diseases such as coronary artery
disease. Phospholipids are the lipids that make up the cell membrane
in the lipid bilayer, and are responsible for diffusion & osmosis.
Steroids act as a hormone for the body.A lipid has 4 calories per
gram. Sat fat is an example of a lipid
Lipid functions
Fats are broken down in the digestive tract to form individual fatty acids
and cholesterol molecules. Both of which are key components in the
membrane of cells. Cholesterol is also used to make other compounds
in the body. Fatty acids are also an important source of energy,
especially for long-term storage. Lipids are also used in: hormones,
thermal insulation, mechanical protection, insulation of nerves, and
buoyancy.
What makes up lipids
Lipids are made up of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon just like
carbohydrates and proteins (although proteins also contain a small
amount of nitrogen and sulfur.) The way the lipid is made up affects
what type of lipid it is. The monomers that build lipids are glycerol and
fatty acids.

Steroids : are lipids. Triglycerides : contain glycerol and.
