Using the TI-84 Plus CE
Given two points on the curve of an exponential function, use a TI-84 Plus
calculator to find the equation.
1. Press [STAT] > [EDIT]
2. Clear any existing entries in columns L1 and L2.
3. In L1, enter the x-coordinates given.
4. In L2, enter the corresponding y-coordinates.
5. Press [STAT] > [CALC], scroll down to 0: ExpReg (Exponential Regression), and press
[ENTER]
6. The screen displays a list of items Xlist: L1 Ylist: L2 FreqList: Store RegEQ: Calculate.
Arrow down to the Store RegEQ: line and Press [VARS] > [Y-VARS] > 1: Function > 1: Y1.
7. Press [ENTER] and Calculate will be flashing. Press [ENTER].
8. The screen displays the values of a and b in the exponential equation 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑎𝑎 𝑏𝑏 𝑥𝑥 .
9. The graph will also be displayed in the GRAPH window.
10. You may need to adjust your viewing window to display the full graph.
11. Press Y=, in Y2= 40
12. Press [2nd] >[CALC]> 5: Intersect
13. Press [ENTER] 3 times, you will see First curve? Second curve? Guess? Intersection in
the bottom of the screen. (x=5.329548 y=40)
EX. Given points (3, 14.6) and (7,82.4). Then find the value of 𝑥𝑥 when 𝑦𝑦 = 40.

Using the TI-84 Plus CE
The AP PreCalculus students will need to find residual plots using your calculator. .
A residual plot will help you decide whether the model chosen will be an
appropriate model.
Use the data at right to create a residual plot. 𝒙𝒙 1 2 3 4 5
𝒚𝒚 2 1.2 3.6 3.2 4
1. Press [STAT] > [EDIT]
2. Clear any existing entries in columns L1 and L2
3. In L1, enter the x-coordinates.
4. In L2, enter the corresponding y-coordinates.
5. Press [2nd]>[Y=], to go to the STAT PLOT menu, Choose Plot 1, hit ENTER
6. Turn the plot ON by hitting ENTER
7. Arrow down to TYPE: choose the first option (scatter plot)
8. Make Xlist: L1
9. Make Ylist: [2nd] > [STAT] > 9:RESID
10. Press Graph to view the residual plot
If you need to see the calculated residual values:
Go to the top of L3, Press[2nd]>[STAT]>9:RESID
Here is one more to try.
x 1 3 5 7 9
Find an exponential regression model
and then anaylze the residual plot. y 4 9 17 16 25

Using the TI-84 Plus CE
Let’s review an important skill for the AP PreCalculus Exam using your calculator.
Given the table, we want to find the coefficient of determination ,𝒓𝒓𝟐𝟐 and the
correlation coefficient, 𝒓𝒓 for data sets to determine if our regression equation is a
best fit. Let’s Go!
1. Create a list of the data using a list/spreadsheet.
2. Make a scatter plot, Press: 2nd , then Y= and 1. Graph and adjust window for
data in the table.
3. Analyze the data with an appropriate regression model. STAT>CALC> Choose
a regression model, then store RegEQ into Y1 by pressing VARS> Y-Vars> 1: 1.
EX: Vehicles are tracked at a busy intersection for a 24-hour period and reported
in the table below, where t = 0 represents midnight.
Hours 0 3 6 10 14 18 21
Vehicles 17 4 22 45 90 78 42
Press STAT>1 Press 2nd>Y= >1; Turn ON ; Choose Type: Scatterplot; Set
Enter data in L1 and L2 Xlist: L1 and Ylist: L2. Press GRAPH; adjust your WINDOW
