Integrating Music into Grade 1 Math Lesson

Objective: Using music to teach counting for Grade 1 students

Steps

In this lesson, music excerpts will be played in class while students analyze then and clap or count along
to identify beat patterns.

A list of songs with varying rhythmic patterns will be selected and input into a table. The songs will be
sourced from YouTube for educational purposes only.

The teacher will select a song from the list and demonstrate to the students how to find the beat using
different patterns. The lesson will use one to seven patterns for the students to fully master counting
using music.

The teacher will continue to play the song as students identify the pattern. It is noteworthy that the
pattern is the musical part. The lesson will start with simple to complex patterns. Complex activities will
demonstrate masterly of counting.

Assessment

The teacher will use songs with a steady beat to assess and extend grade 1 student’s ability to count.
The teacher will determine whether they can keep up the beat or whether they need to stop and think.
Fluency with counting could be determined by using faster or slower beats.
