ARCTIC

Spot the Difference

What’s different between the two Arctic pictures below? In the scene on the right, circle as many differences as you can find from the scene on the left
(can you spot all 19?!). Some of the things you circle may simply be differences between the two pictures, but some of them do not truly represent the Arctic.
Try to identify these six things and use the space below to explain why they don’t belong.

A red circle indicates things that are not found in the Arctic, a blue circle indicates things that are commonly misunderstood about the Arctic, and a green circle indicates things
that are found in the Arctic but are not in one of the pictures.

Explanations for inaccurate depictions:

1. Although the Arctic is home to a wide variety of wildlife, penguins and monkeys are not found there. In addition, while many seals call the
Arctic home, the leopard seal is not one of them. Leopard seals, along with penguins, are found in Antarctica.
2. Igloos are no longer a common type of housing in the Arctic. Although igloos remain culturally significant in some Arctic communities, the
majority of people live in modern-day housing.
3. The Arctic landscape consists of much more than just ice; in the warmer summer months, there is a lot of vegetation in the tundra, including
shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses.
4. The Arctic has been a region commonly traveled for generations by boat, as a means of transporting goods and acquiring food. But as sea ice
melts, traffic from ships (including ships carrying harmful pollutants) is increasing, whichposes significant threats to the health of the
ecosystem and the people and animals depending on it.
