CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
According to [Link] education is the cornerstone of society,
shaping people and communities. Over time, ideas and skills were passed
through various forms of teaching. However, education has evolved, from oral
traditions to the creation of modern schools.
Education is like a magic key that unlocks our full potential. Whether we’re
a kid or an adult, it gives us the knowledge and skills we need to do well in life.
Learning basics like reading and math or diving into complex subjects sets us up
for a lifetime of growth.
Investing in this pays off big time because it helps people work well and
grow their careers. When people are educated, it boosts a country’s edge in the
world market. This leads to more growth, fortune, and success.
However, based on [Link] economic reasons
play a crucial role. Families often rely on their children’s contributions to meet
household expenses or support siblings’ education. As such, students willingly
step into the workforce, driven by a deep-rooted sense of responsibility and
determination to help their families.
Many working students didn’t actively choose to work; rather, their
circumstances led them down that path from an early age. Often, these individuals
come from environments where financial stability is a constant struggle. Growing

up in families facing economic hardships, the necessity to contribute becomes
ingrained in their lives early on.
They witness their guardians or parents working multiple jobs just to put
food on the table or keep a roof overhead. In such environments, the idea of
solely focusing on education is a luxury they cannot afford. For these students,
work isn’t a choice but a means of survival, ingrained in their upbringing and
molded by the realities of their circumstances.
Being a working student can have an impact on academic performance.
Studies have shown that working students may experience challenges in
managing their time, which can affect their academic performance. Additionally,
work can limit flexibility in students' schedules, leaving them vulnerable in
emergencies, and can also cause students' social lives and mental health to
suffer. However, it is important to note that not all studies have found a negative
impact on academic performance. Some studies have reported mixed results, with
a threshold of 10-25 hours per week of work being identified as a potential tipping
point. Furthermore, the impact of work on academic performance may vary
depending on factors such as work motivation, job satisfaction, and work-life
balance. Overall, while being a working student can pose challenges, it is possible
to find a balance between work and academics with proper support and
accommodations.
In view of this, the researchers wants to know the perception of HUMSS 11
and 12 working students about their study and work. They also want to explore

the effects of the working student’s duties to their academic performance. In
addition, this will also tackle the possible ways on how the working students can
effectively balance their work duties and academic responsibilities to improve their
academic performance.
