Strand: GAS 11

Exothermic Examples;

 Water to Ice Cube

It slowly loses heat and starts to cool down to become ice cube. The water change into ice cube is an exothermic
reaction.
 Burning of a Candle

The body of the candle carries called “Paraffin”, which is a hydrocarbon. it reacts with oxygen to create carbon
dioxide and water. This reaction is also called exothermic because it gives out heat to the atmosphere.
 Rusting of Iron

The heat gets released when iron comes in contact with oxygen then it takes place due to the formation of
moisture on the iron.
 Combustion of a burning wood

The wood reacts with the oxygen and that’s when the Wood burns, the molecular oxygen O² and a large amount
of heat is produced.

 Combustion of a Fireworks

It releases energy in the form of heat, and explosions occur whenever there is a rapid and intense reaction. This
sends the fireworks shooting into the sky, and the heat from this explosion gives the colors their energy.

Endothermic Examples;
 Melting an Ice Cube

Melting is an endothermic process because needs to apply external heat to the solid substance in order to make
it melt.
 Evaporating a liquid water

Evaporation is an endothermic reaction because water molecules must absorb heat from the surroundings to
increase their kinetic energy and change them to vapours.
 Cooking a Food

The cooking of food is an endothermic change as heat is absorbed by a pan in that food that is kept and then
food is cooked.
 Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is a endothermic because that process needs energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and
water into glucose. This reaction is called endergonic because it requires an input of energy.
