PERFORMANCE TASK

SCIENCE 9

Name: Grade &

Section:

1. What is Energy?

ANSWER:

Energy, in physics, the capacity for doing work. It may exist in potential,
kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear, or other various forms. There
are, moreover, heat and work, energy in the process of transfer from one body
to another. After it has been transferred, energy is always designated
according to its nature. Hence, heat transferred may become thermal energy,
while work done may manifest itself in the form of mechanical energy.

2. Give the different kinds and provide 3 examples in each kind of energy.
ex: kinetic energy- meaning and examples

ANSWER:

The Three Types of Energy and their examples.

Kinetic Energy : the energy of motion, such as a moving car or a falling ball.

The 3 Examples of Kinetic Energy are

Kinetic energy include a speeding bullet, a walking person, and electromagnetic

radiation like light.

The energy associated with the constant, random bouncing of atoms or molecules, also known as
thermal energy.

A car moving on the road and moving clouds are examples of translational kinetic energy.

Potential Energy : the energy stored by an object due to its position or structure, such as a
stretched spring or a raised weight.

The 3 Examples of Potential energy are

A rock sitting at the edge of a cliff has gravitational potential energy because it can fall to the
ground.

A stretched spring has elastic potential energy because it can snap back to its original shape.
A stick of dynamite has chemical potential energy because it can explode when ignited.

Chemical Energy : the energy stored in the bonds of molecules, such as in food or fuel.

The 3 Examples of Chemical Energy are:

1. Coal: Combustion converts chemical energy into light and heat.

2. Wood: Combustion converts chemical energy into light and heat.
3. Petroleum: Can be burned to release light and heat or changed into another form of chemical
energy, such as gasoline.
