Sampling of Coal from Trucks – (ASTM D 2234-96)-GNFC
1. Randomly select one tuck from 10 trucks.
2. Select 5 diagonal points (4 corners + 1 centre) in a truck. Remove 1-1.5feet
layer at that points.
3. Take 5kg sample from each point, resulting in total quantity – 25kg/truck.
Preparation of TM sample from each lot – approx. 2000MT.
1. Mix all collected sample for every receipt of 2000MT quantity.
2. Reduce quantity by conning & quartering.
3. Collect 2 samples of 1 kg each for analysis of Total Moisture by increment
method.
4. Preserve rest of samples for making composite sample of aprox. 4000 MT for
total analysis.
Preparation of sample for complete analysis for a Lot of – 4000MT.
1. Mix samples of all sub lot & reduce up to 30kg. by conning & quartering.
2. Collect 2 samples of 1kg each for Surface moisture analysis.
3. Crush the rest of approx. 28kg sample by 4.75mm Jaw crusher.
4. Mix well the entire crushed sample approx. 28kg.
5. Reduce it up to 7kg. by conning 7 quartering.
6. Crush entire quantity by 2.36mm hammer crusher.
7. Mix well entire crushed quantity & collect 1 kg sample for HGI analysis.
8. Mix the rest of the sample & reduce up to 1.5kg by conning & quartering.
9. Pulverize entire 1.5kg sample to 250 microns. Prepare 3 samples.
10.Fill these 3 samples in plastic bags 7 seal it.
11.3 samples – 1) For LAB. 2) For contractor’s inspection agency. 3) For Referee.

GCV Analysis by PARR-6100 Bomb calorimeter.-
1. Weigh 1 gm 212 micron size coal sample.
2. Put that sample in crucible. Put crucible in bomb.
3. Bomb upper cover contains – crucible holder, 2 electrode tightened by
nichrome wire, One way Oxygen inlet valve, pressure release valve.
4. Connect nichrome wire with cotton thread to touch with coal sample from
free end.
5. Take 2 ml distilled water in bomb.
6. Reassemble & tightened bomb by hand.
7. Connect oxygen supply to bomb.
8. Charge oxygen at pressure 450 psi. Command given from calorimeter.
(1min.)
9. After 1 min oxygen supply automatically cut off. Disconnect tube from bomb.
10.Take exact 2 lit DM water in a jar.
11.Put bomb assembly in a water jar & ensure there is no leakage from bomb by
observing bubbles.
12.Connect firing unit ignition circuit with combustion bomb.
13.Start unit – stirrer & continue still constant temp arrived. (Approx. 7 to 8 min.)
14.After that calorimeter gives automatically results. Calorimeter EE value.
Temp. & GCV.
15.EE value should around 2400. +-20 tolerance accepted.
16.We can observe temp. Difference by recording temp. before & after.
17.GCV = Water equivalent X Temp. Difference - 30.32
