2 Response January 29, 2012 The Superior Generation The millennials, also known as Generation Y, versus Generation X, more commonly named the baby boomers generation. According to Bauerlein, Generation X has provided the world with grunge music and slacker attitude, not a real good start at attempting to prove our previous generation is better than our current one (41). Theyve also generously shown the world how jealous and greedy they can be by stomping on people and slitting throats, figuratively of course, to reach the top of their careers, which is so conventional anyway. I digress, this paper is meant to persuade, not argue, that my Generation X will bring about lasting impressions and contributions to our society. The baby boomers may have brought culture, but my generation, Generation X, brings about innovation. A whole unit of brain and will-power, that is not afraid to ask why nor be satisfied with societys simple answers. We want more, thus we demand it. The phrase give him a foot and hell take a yard goes hand-in-hand with my generation; give us a concept and well blow your mind. Our predecessors say were lazy; however, we only ask for incentive. Something to fuel our brains, which, by the way Bauerlein, we do have. My generation is also not afraid to take an idea and build physical

Generation X has taken what the previous generation gave us, i.e. the Internet, and made blogs, social networking, and even twelve year-olds making their own websites. Can you say awesome? So, Bauerleine basically states we are the dumbest generation simply because we do not read; funny, since my fellow peers, along with nationwide students, are still incorporating a wide variety of challenging classes and clubs into their schedule. Robotics, AP American History, Honors Society, and Post-Secondary Educational Opportunity courses, are all classes students, like myself, integrate into their schedule. Bauerlein even has to admit in his book that enrollments in higher education jumped 9 percent (55). By saying so, it seems Generation X still has a strong desire for success; thus we are ambitious, not stupid. I have stated previously that my generation brings innovation rather than culture, but maybe I spoke too soon. Larissa MacFarquhar talks about the fears of cultural apocalypse in her essay, mocking those individuals with neurotic visions of the end (61). The current generation is not killing off the practices of the old, rather we are furthering it. Our eagerness to cultivate technology will give way to many jobs for the future, provide landscape for easier mechanics to be developed to help our country and its industries, and will bring in profit and better communication between countries. Im not saying a utopian world will be created, but perhaps a more efficient society with our culture truly flourishing, not dying out.

McTeer 3 Bauerlein is constantly pointing out my generations supposed flaws, but in no way does not reading constantly make someone stupid. Harriet Tubman is a great example of an illiterate woman who proved capable of making a difference, despite her not being able to read. She made a great impact in history by bringing over 300 slaves to freedom through a sort of underground railroad over a span of ten years. Generation X contains the same fervor to succeed and Im sure we will not disappoint.
