IDEOLOGY, REPRESENTATION & THE MEDIA


What is Ideology?
o The body of ideas reflecting the social needs and aspirations of an individual, group, class, or culture. o A set of beliefs that form the basis of a political, economic, or other system. Many theorists have spent much time thinking about and commenting on Ideology. Their ideas will often reflect their own political viewpoint. But, their theories can help us to understand how people are represented in a specific way and how our identities are often constructed around these wider ideals.

Why does the Media Represent Different Groups of People differently?

INTRODUCTION TO MARXISM
You are going to watch a short YouTube clip that covers the main ideas of Marxism. Marxists have clear views about Capitalism and the Media as a product of a Capitalist society. They argue that representations of different collective groups of people are used as a way in which to maintain dominant ideology. MAINTAINING THE SOCIAL STATUS QUO


If we apply a Marxist critique to Media representation, we could say that the Media represent different groups of people differently in order to maintain the social status quo. This means that by representing different groups of people who aren t part of the dominant / ruling group in a negative way, the role and positions of these groups will always be kept as subordinate to the dominant collective group, thus protecting the values, beliefs and ideology of that group, keeping them in power.
