Web: Common Experience During carpet time the children and I sat down to talk about what was happening outside. I asked the children what they were doing outdoor play. I mention to them about the tree and what they were doing with the hockey sticks. I asked them It isn t summer anymore, so what season is it? Most of the children answered fall. We talked as a group about what is going on during this season. The children started to say all these different ideas and I started making the web with them writing down of what they said. I told the children with so many of their bright and wonderful ideas, we can come up with so many types of activities that we can do together.

Web: What We Learned During carpet time the children and I sat down to review our topic on FALL. I asked the children what they learned during the duration of this project. I asked them It won t be fall anymore, so what s the next season? Most of the children answered Winter. We mention with so many things that we learned as a group.

Activities Activity: Making of the Tree Materials: Poster Size Mural paper Markers Collection of leaves and bark Tissue paper (green) Glue Tape Using the mural paper, I drew an outline of the tree, without leaves on it. Took green tissue paper cut it out as the grass and taped on the bottom of the tree. Taped and glued on bark that s been collected on to the drawing of the tree. Tape on a variety of leaves that s been also collected on to the brown paper spread around the tree to make it seem like it s falling off the branches. The branches will remain bare somewhat until the end of the season. The children will paint on hand prints onto the branches representing the leaves. Group time: Story Time Title: The Busy Little Squirrel Author: Nancy Tarufi The story is about how the squirrel is preparing itself for the long winter sleep. Talks about what the animal collects and the purpose of it. During the reading of the story, I asked questions about the story, what they see on the pictures, and what they understand also if they have any questions at the end of the book. Activity: Examining Leaves and Bark From the collection of leaves and bark for the previous activity, with the extras, set them out on a tray with science equipment eg. Magnifying glass. Children will explore in depth of the leaves and bark. From observation of the children picking on the dirt and falling leaves on the ground. Group Time: Story Time and Examine Title: Leaves Author: David Enza Stein The story is about a baby bear learning it s first autumn. From why the leaves are falling, why is it getting so cold and how to prepare himself for the winter. During the reading of the story, the children are asked questions about the story, what they see on the pictures, what they understand and at the end of the story check if they have any questions about the book. Also I include a demonstration of varieties of leaves, let the children pass them around within the group to get them to feel, see, smell and hear texture of the leaves. Group Time: Story Time Title: Beauty and the Beak: A Turkey Cautionary Tale The story is about a group of hens owning a beauty parlour. They met a turkey who is about to get eaten for a Thanksgiving Feast. The hens took action to save the turkey. During the reading of the story, the children are asked questions about the story, what they see in the pictures, what they understand and at the end of the story check if they have any questions about the book.

Activity: Making Turkey Ornaments Materials: -fuzzy yarn -glue -pieces of triangles -stuffing -pipe cleaners -string -feathers -googly eyes -scissors -pompoms -pieces of material I set the table with a container holding a ball of fuzzy yarn and stuffing {this is to make the body of the turkey). Another container that holds the pompoms and the googly eyes (the head and eyes). A container that holds the feathers and material (wings, tail, and waddle). And at container filled with pipe cleaners that are cut about an inch long and pieces of triangles (legs, neck and beck). The string is to hang the turkeys when finish, glue will be provided and scissors to cut the string. I took a group of five children to sit with me to do the activity. I demonstrated to take the stuffing and make it into a ball. The children were squeezing their stuffing into their fists, I showed them to rub the stuffing in circular motions with both palms of the hands, one of them said This is like rolling play dough! and laughs. I took a piece of yarn and started to warp the stuffing into a fuzzy ball. The children did the same. I helped the children to cut off the excess yarn and tied a knot to prevent it from unravelling itself. When everybody has their fuzzy ball, I told them to take a pipe cleaner and put it through the bottom of their ball, then they fold the pipe cleaner in half to have their turkey legs. Then I told them to take another piece of pipe cleaner and poke it on top of the ball, this is the neck. Then take the pompom put it through the top of the pipe cleaner, to keep it stiff on I helped the children to apply glue, this is the head of the turkey. Then take the piece of material, apply glue on it and wrap it around the neck like a scarf. This is the waddle. I helped the children to glue on the googly eyes and beak (pieces of triangles). Finally, I told the children to stick the feather as much as they like. Later I helped the children to strung up their turkey and let it set t dry to get ready to be hung.

Group Time: Questions about the topic and telling what they did for Thanksgiving I taped a chart paper up on the wall with the title list of Questions . I reviewed with the children about the topic of the season fall. I asked them if they have any questions about the topic. I ve gathered seven questions with the children and hopefully I can think of activities that can answer their questions.

Activity: Spider Pipe Cleaners Materials: -sequence or glitter or eyes -regular size pipe cleaners

-glue

I set up a container holding a bunch of pipe cleaners (legs and body) and a container holding sequence or glitter or eyes. Glue will be provided. A group of three children wanted to know how to make a spider. I showed the kids to take four pipe cleaners of their choice of

colours, and told them to twist them together right in the middle. I asked the children how many legs do they see, lets count together. We counted together that their were eight legs. I showed them to take another pipe cleaner and wrap it around the middle of the legs to make the body. Then I told them to put whatever they want for the eyes. The children applied a lot of glue and stuck on the eyes.

Activity: Making Pumpkin Faces Materials: Printouts of Pumpkins Markers I set the table with each printout for each chair and in the middle a set of variety of markers. I also used a chart paper that lists the different face expressions with images that the children can use for their pumpkin drawing. Throughout the day every two children comes to the table colouring their pumpkin and drawing in the face. One of the children got up and walked up to the chart paper and used her pointer finger to sound out the words. When the children finished with their work, I made a doc panel to show their work of the pumpkins. Title Our Jack-o-Lanterns . The older children made typical jack-o-lanturn faces and the younger ones drew on happy faces (J) in general. (picture under phase 2 doc panel) Activity: Making Poppies Materials: -Red and Black Paper -Scissors

-Glue

On the creative table I set up sheets of red and black paper beside each seat, set a rack of scissors for cutting. Three children came to the table asking What do we do here? I told them We are going to make poppies today The three children were very excited saying that they want one. I told them to cut up some red circles and a black circle. The children cut up variety sizes of red circles and glue the together in a flower form then they placed the black circle on the centre. They held up their poppies up that they made and said look, I have my poppy now! I made a big one! I praised them for making such beautiful poppies. With their poppies I put it with my doc panel discussing about Remembrance Day showing the children s poppies to parents.

Activity: Making of the tree To end off the season, I lay the poster of the tree on the table flat and set up three different colour paint: green, orange and red; this is for the children to paint on their hands and lay it on one of the tree s branches, then they write their names beside their prints. During naptime as the children start to wake up, one by one I called the children to do their hand print. Some were egger to write their names, even wanted to do more than one hand print.

Activity: Which season is Which? Materials: -Printout of activity sheet -Scissors

-Glue

I printout a template of four boxes saying each the four seasons with arrows saying what comes next? . Also another printout of the corresponding tree that macth into the apropriate season. The children cut up the tree page and glue them where they belong.

Grouptime: Halloween Fashion Show When the children are seated on to the carpet, I read them a little history on Halloween and why we wear costumes. Then I made them stand up in a line, one by one they will step up from the line do a pose and describe what is their costume.

Rationale Dear parents of the Kindergarten Room; After working for couple weeks in the kindergarten room with your children I ve observed and have conversations with them about a very interesting topic, Autumn. Your children asked a lot of questions and ideas for activities and storytelling during the next few weeks. This project is based on the interest of the season Fall/Autumn. Exploring the different events throughout the season, examine the nature and wildlife, and understand the natural occurrences during this season. This will enrich your child s curiosity, grow on their development and enlighten them to new perspectives. It will be surprising of how much your children will and already know during this project. Examine natural leaves and bark Enrich them with books and tales Look at bugs natural environment Look at the trees system of changes Look through special monthly events How do pumpkins or vegetables grow Draw and create out of their ideas Demonstrate and share what they made to their classmates We ll be posting your children s work and the events that will be relating to this project. It will be great that you as the parents can also contribute ideas to grow more of your children s development. Victoria Garcia-Gomez
