Y9 Physics Revision Checklist - Lent Assessment 2025
The Year 9 Lent Physics examination will test all the work covered in these units:
[A] Atomic Structure & Electrostatics, [B] Motion
Format of the exam
• The exam will consist of a single paper
Duration: between 60 and 70 minutes (exact time to be decided)
Number of marks: between 60 and 70 (exact number to be decided)
• The question will be based on past exam questions.
• You could be tested on your ability to :
- Perform calculations
Rearrange formula, substitute data, calculate an answer, provide your final answer with appropriate sig. figs
and units.
- Describe and explain experimental methods including drawing diagrams.
- Analyse experimental data
E.g. produce or use a graph, draw or evaluate conclusions.
- Write descriptions and explanations, making appropriate use of relevant technical vocabulary, and using your
knowledge and understanding of the Physics you have covered.
These may be based on examples you have covered in class, but they may also involve applications of the
Physics that you are unlikely to have seen before. In which case the questions test your ability to apply key
Physics concepts.
Revision Advice
Your revision must be active.
• First you should summarise the Physics you have learnt in school.
You could produce revision notes; mind maps; flash cards.
You need to cover:
- the key equations
- key definitions
- key laws or principles of physics
- descriptions and explanations of the applications you have studied in school.
- key experimental skills
• Secondly you need to test yourself on what you have tried to learn.
You can use past paper questions and mark schemes to help you.
• You should start early and go back over topics several times to improve your knowledge and understanding of
the material.
Supporting Material
• Notes from your teacher
• Pages from the Textbook.
If you don’t have a hard copy of the textbook a digital scan is available on the student shared area in
Student Shared Area > Documents > Physics > Scans of Textbooks
Collins Edexcel IGCSE Physics Student Book (med res)
The pdf files is very large, be patient it takes a while to download.
For the exam you will need
• A pen
• A pencil
• A ruler
• A calculator
You will NOT be able to borrow these from the Physics Department before the exam.
[A] Atomic Structure & Electrostatics
• Identification of electrical conductors or insulators
• Experiment: Charging of insulating materials by friction
• Positive and negative electrostatic charges are produced on materials by the loss and gain
of electrons
• Forces of attraction between unlike charges and forces of repulsion between like charges
• Explanation of electrostatic phenomena in terms of the movement of electrons
• Potential dangers of electrostatic charges
• Uses of electrostatic charge in devices e.g. photocopiers
• Structure of an atom in terms of protons, neutrons and electrons
• Periodic table symbols for nuclei
Supporting Material:
Notes from your teacher;
Textbook pages 117-126 (electrostatics); 340-343 (atomic structure)
[B] Motion
• • •
• Plot and explain distance−time graphs • • •
• Know and use the relationship between average speed, distance moved and time taken:
distance moved
average speed =
time taken
• Describe practical experiments that investigate the motion of everyday objects such as toy
cars or tennis balls
• Know and use the relationship between acceleration, change in velocity and time taken:
change in velocity
acceleration =
time taken
(v - u)
a =
t
• Plot and explain velocity-time graphs
• Determine acceleration from the gradient of a velocity−time graph
• Determine the distance travelled from the area between a velocity−time graph and the time
axis
• Use the relationship between final speed, initial speed, acceleration and distance moved:
(final speed)2 = (initial speed)2 + (2 × acceleration × distance moved)
v2 = u2 + (2 × a × s)
Supporting Material:
Notes from your teacher;
Textbook pages 8-18 (distance and speed; distance time graphs); 20-26 (acceleration; velocity-time graphs)
