Illustration

Illustration is something that I am immensely passionate about. I usually work with pen and ink. I love exploring textures and mediums. I am also comfortable doing digital illustrations.

The above four hand done illustrations were inspired by a Mattise painting.

The three illustration on the left were inspired by lines I read or heard somewhere. Starting from the left, 1.Our fathers are crackling in the forest, our mothers are dead in the sea. -Jim Morrison. 2. Your ego is your biggest friend and foe. It can either save you or swallow you whole into never ending darkness. -Jack, a German self proclaimed Sadhu to me, on the beaches of Pondicherry. 3. There can be either love or ego, non can exist with the other. -Kabir.

These illustration were done as part of a group project on graphic novels. The graphic novel was about a girl who contracted HIV and how she struggled through it. Above are a few random frames from the graphic novel. The images are all hand illustrated.

This is a three-frame illustration of a childhood story of mine. When I was little, my parents brought home a pair of huge turtles. They were taking care of them for a friend, while she was out of town. I instantly took to them, to one a little more than the other. I loved watching him pop his head out when I fed him hibiscus flowers. His name was Einstein. When the time came to give him back, no one warned me. So one morning, I woke up he was gone. On asking around, my uncle decided to tell me that my grandfather got hungry last night and wanted soup. So they made turtle soup with Einstein for my grandfather. Being five and extremely gullible I believed my uncle. When my grandfather would fall asleep I would go up to his big belly and talk to Einstein. The above illustrations are done with childhood pictures of mine, a collage of other images and some hand illustration as well.

The above was a work done to illustrate the line - Lucille Balls favourite snack was peanut butter sandwich and jelly .

Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it

Theres something about the fact that just through using the right typeface in the right way, you could have the maximum impact of the point you are making. Through my years in Srishti I learnt how to use type the right way and how to type-out-of-the-box with it. Soon using type with one of my other favourite things, illustration. I began playing with image and text. I started using text to not only decorate the illustration, but to add a layer of meaning and sometime to emphasis the idea, and vice versa.

Experimental Type
The idea behind this project was to take an object and break it up to smaller bits and make letter forms using the whole and its parts. And use these letter forms to make a typographical poster. I used a bulb with the wire. Initially I broke the bulb and made letter form the broke glass pieces. Then I used the bulb and the wire as a whole. I created letter using the wire and the bulb while it was lit. I also made a set of letter by using the tungsten filament that was inside the bulb.

In my final poster I used the letter I made with the lit bulb and wire as the main type and the letters made form the tungsten as the sub text.

Letter form

To arrive at a personalised letter form there is a very structured process that one must follow. I began by hand drawing the roman letter and some Devanagiri scripts. Then using the letter H, N and G I iterated and developed a personalized letter form. By adding a letter or two to H, N and G a word was created. Using the same letter form a word for a hypothetical company was created. After trying out various options a final logo was chosen. This logo was then taken forward to form to more collaterals of the same company, keeping the letter form the same, but making subtle changes by adding or removing something from it.

Image and Text

Trying to make an image work with text or vice versa make you bring a lot of element together, like hierarchy, colour, contrast etc. These are some posters I did for AIDS week. The idea behind these poster were to tell people to get themselves tested and not avoid it because of the fear of facing the truth.

Teach a Child

I did a series of postcards using education for street children as my theme. I came up with the idea of making postcards while ideating at a cafe. In various hang outs in Bengaluru; they have postcards that you can pick up for free. So I thought that this would be a great way to spread my message. These postcards try and urge people to take some time off and teach an underprivileged child. My target audience ranged from 18 year olds to people around 30 or 35. So I wanted these cards to be eye-catching, something one would pick up from a rack. Each of these postcards have a photo with superimposed images, illustration and a quote. The back has a line saying, Take some time off, teach a child.

This card has a quote by Victor Hugo that says, He who opens a school door, closes a prison. I reinterpreted this quote as a metaphor of breaking free. I used a photo that I had taken of a young girl labourer, with wings to show the breaking free of the girl child from the prisons of society and discrimination, with education. On her head she has a halo made of a chain, which is disappearing slowly.

Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela. The boy in this picture has an amour on. But he has a pencil in his hand instead of a sword, showing his fight, for the education he deserves.

Education is the transmission of civilization. Will Durant. In this photo, the child is playing with lego blocks. I have used the metaphor of education being the building blocks of society.

Layout

Layout

Doing layouts is the best way to bring together ones learning of all design principles. Layouts exercise your knowledge of type, colour, hierarchy, image and text, harmony, contrast, and possibly every other element. On the left are layouts I did for a cd booklet of a hypothetical band.

This is a brochure we made, during specialization, for the Foundation Studies Programme.

Make Some Noise.

Make Some Noise was a pamphlet made for an organization called Maraa. Maraa is a media collective that aims to create platforms for expression through media and the creative arts. Maraa did various campaigns on violence and street harassment against women. This brochure was made during the time when woman in Bengaluru were being attacked on the basis of what a certain activist group thought was the violation of Indian traditions and values. We came up with the idea of the whistle. It urges women to carry whistles with them, and use it in case of an attack, to attract attention or as a call for help. This brochure was made in double colour with very simple illustration. Hence it can be reproduced easily.

The intention of this project was to bring papier mache craft into mainstream functional products. This idea was then combined with the larger notion that there was no point in making another product the designer did not take responsibility for making the world a better place to live in. a designer can choose to either design for a need or a want. This project chose to design for a need. The material itself is a product which is then upcycled into new products. The three pertinent questions this process-based project revolved around were: recontextualization

of papier mache craft as mainstream products, waste management, and adding a value system by making it as responsible a material as possible in terms of ecofriendliness and sustainability.

I worked on the Srishti Graduation Book for the batch of 2010. I designed the cover and some of the dividing pages. I also worked on the panels that went up at the exhibition.

Branding, Identity and Information Design

Branding

Branding oneself is a great way to learn how to make a brand work. These are visiting cards aimed at branding oneself. Each visiting card was to bring out one character in us. They were supposed to illustrate line like: (Starting from top) > I am Paru, and I love tea. > I am Paru, and I am a smoker.

Branding

Branding a business that usually does not have a brand identity can be quite the challenge. I branded the chai kade outside the Mallya Aditi campus. I started the process by doing a lot of research. I spent a day at the kade and interviewed people who came there, the Srishti students, drivers, workers from the nearby factories and others. Then I used the statistics I had collected to see what the kade needed as a brand face. Since the majority of their customers were Srishti students and factory workers I decided to make it something that both of the above audience could relate to. I used an Indian truck-art colour palette. I used the lotus, trying to bring in a traditional element while also keeping it design-school-cool.

Information Design
Collection large amounts of data, processing it and put it down in a easy-to-understand manner is possibly the toughest thing Ive done in my years at Srishti. There is so much information available. What to put in and what to edit out is completely left in the hands of the designer. I guess while doing something like this the designers perspective creeps into the work at some level.

Identity Design

Creating an identity for a company, venture, magazine etc. needs to start with a lot of research. I worked on a project to create identity for a store in Bengaluru called The Ants Store. The action northeast trust (The Ant), works towards sustainable and holistic development for rural and poor voiceless communities mainly in the northeast. The client wanted an ant in their logo, to show the hard working and persistant nature of the ant. We started off by iterating various kinds of ants. Once the client chose the ant, we took that forward and made design collaterals.

Recycle existing packaging to make packaging for a different commodity. becomes new packaging for candles.

Lightbox is a recycled shoe box which

recycled candle holders, made from broken alcohol bottles and paper mache. It also contains 4 other naturally made eco-friendly candles.

Lightbox contains a set of 3 candles in

a box with a set of four matchboxes. The base of the three recycled candle holders and candles is made from a Dominos Pizza box. The candle holders with the candles are placed in this base, so that they are secure in the shoebox and the glass is prevented form breaking. The box containing the matchboxes is a recycled package of a computer mouse.

The idea behind this project was to bring out Bengaluru culture. I choose the take the famous Kannada line Swalpa Adjust Maadi and create a two colour print using that.

Weaving

This is a hand woven bag, made on the loom. It is created from scrap cloth and waste leather.

This was a project where I explored the various ways to bind books.

Shibori

Shibori is a term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, compressing it, or capping.

Internship

I did my internship at a design studio in Mumbai called Yes Yes Why Not? And yes, it was as fun as it sounds. I got work on some big brands. My best learning from the internship would be learning how to work with clients. I worked on brainstorming for promotion and sustenance of Keya instant soups. I also did some illustration for the mock Deisel- India website. We also worked on the logo unit and DM packaging for The One Alliance.

This was the BSA adventure store where the higher end cycles for mountain biking and sports are sold. I worked on the new identity for the store and the cafe. Bean Good

These are large wall graphics that have been inspired by Bengaluru city and its little quirks. These illustrations go on the walls of the cafe.

These illustrations were inspired by conversations that happen in and around addas. I picked words that are commonly used in conversations and illustrated them with and explanation of what the words mean.
Traditional South Indian coffee prepared with decoction made in a filter set and topped with milk. Kannada word for hot. In casual slang it is also used to describe a hot person.
