Origins and Rise of the Mutapa State

The Mutapa State was founded by Nyatsimba Mutota, who moved north to the Dande area in search of salt and to escape succession disputes after his father's death. Two theories explain the origins of the Mutapa people: the Salt Theory, which highlights the search for resources, and the Succession Theory, which focuses on Mutota's ambition to establish his own state. The rise of the Mutapa State was influenced by factors such as the expansion of Great Zimbabwe, civil wars, and the region's favorable environmental conditions.
