3.How did they move to this place.
4.When was it.
5.Where did they final settle and when.
-The founder of the Mutapa State was Nyatsimba Mutota.
-There two theories on the origins of the Mutapa People.
1.THE SALT THEORY.
-Early in the 15th century , Nyatsimba Mutota was sent by his father chief Chibatamatosi to the
Dande area to look for salt.
-The old method of getting salt from reads and dung of goats was no longer able to meet the
population needs.
-He first sent his servant Nyakatondo who came and reported that the area was rich in
elephants for ivory ,gold, fertile soils and near trading with the Arabs the Swahilis and the
Portuguese.
-Mutota then moved north with a group of soldiers.
-His father died at the same time and there were succession disputes and he decided to remain
in the North.
2.THE SUCCESSION THEORY.
-It states that when Mutota did not succeed after the death of his father he decided to move
north to the Dande area to start his own State.
-So as an ambitious leader he moved north and settled in the Dande area with his followers and
formed the Mutapa State.
-He fought and defeated the Korekore people who were already leaving in the area and they
gave him the name Munhumutapa meaning ruler of the Mutapa.
-He established hi capital at the slopes of the Chicago hill near the Uteve River.
