The Background of the Study
Introduction
Education in High school is a crucial time in students, where they not only
strive for good academic excellence but also participate in various extracurricular
activities that foster skill and character growth (O’Neil et al., 2021). Good academic
performance for student-athletes is an achievement. However, some factors affect the
Academic performance of student-athletes. Academic performance is a measure of a
student’s success in their educational pursuits. It can be assessed in various ways,
including grades, test scores, and other forms of evaluation (Ghian Louie Garcia et al.,
2023). Academic performance encompasses objective knowledge (Santana et al.,
2018).
A student-athlete is someone who participates in a sport while also pursuing
their education. According to Tricia Cote, "A student-athlete is someone who is
enrolled in school and participates in the institution's athletic offerings,". Balancing
academic and athletic responsibilities presents a significant challenge for student-
athletes, as they must manage classes, practices, games, and other commitments.
Consequently, researchers seek to evaluate the academic performance of student-
athletes who have these dual responsibilities within our institution. Student-athletes
face unique challenges in balancing their academic responsibilities with their
commitments as athletes, making this goal even more difficult to achieve. Student-
athletes struggle with having additional responsibilities, which adds to their
difficulties. Therefore, the researchers are aiming to identify the factors that influence
the academic performance of the students.
Statement of the Problem
The study was conducted to determine what influence academic performance as a
student athlete at Notre Dame of Trece Martirez.
Specifically, the study aimed to provide the answers to the following questions.
1.) What is the academic performance of the Grade 11 -HUMSS student- athletes?
2.) How being a student athlete influence their academic performance?
3.) How do they manage the dual responsibilities of being a student-athlete and
maintaining academic performance?
Significance of the Study
In this study, student athletes will gain the objective of having two responsibilities
in their studies and their training.
The result of the study will benefit the following:
Students. This study will help them develop effective time management skills for
their two responsibilities as students. This study will help student-athletes to be more
motivated in their roles and apply the importance of time management in fulfilling their
obligations. This can also provide valuable information for them to continue executing
their multiple duties.
School. This study will also benefit the school as they'll be aware of what
struggles the student-athletes are facing. Therefore, it can provide a broad understanding
of our institution for the limited provision of activities for student-athletes.
Teachers. In this study, teachers also have the benefit of becoming aware of their
students' problems and providing guidance and consideration. Student-athletes need the
support of teachers to achieve their goals of balancing studies and training. Through that,
it will also lessen their responsibilities.
Coaches. In this study, it will also help coaches understand the experiences of
student-athletes in balancing their academic performance. Therefore, they might lessen
the practices or activities of the students. Through that, they'll benefit as it also lessens
their responsibilities.
Future Researchers. Future researchers can use this study as a reference in their
works when discussing about student athletes while providing them with appropriate
information and advising that they can apply in their research linked into this topic.
Scope and Delimitations of the Study
This study focuses on Grade 11 HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences)
students at Notre Dame of Trece Martirez who are also student-athletes. Specifically,
the research will investigate the factors influencing their academic performance, which
may include time management, activity from sports, access to resources of academic
support. The study will consider both academic achievement (grades, performance in
assessments, etc.) and non-academic factors (time for studying, balancing school and
sports commitments, and overall well-being) to gain a comprehensive understanding
of how being a student athlete affects academic performance.
In conclusion, Grade 11-HUMSS students who participate in school sports
activities (both individual and team sports). - Students enrolled in the academic year of
2024-2025 at Notre Dame of Trece Martirez. - Factors such as time management,
physical activity, peer interaction, and academic support systems (e.g., tutoring,
teacher relationships). Exclusions: - Students from other academic strands (e.g.,
STEM, ABM, or General Academic). - Students who are not involved in sports. -
Factors outside of the student-athlete experience (e.g., personal health not related to
sports).
Sample Size: The study will only focus on Grade 11 HUMSS student-athletes
at Notre Dame of Trece Martirez, which may limit the generalizability of the findings
to a broader population of student-athletes or those in other schools. External Factors:
Other external influences, such as personal family problems, part-time jobs, or
individual mental health issues, may not be fully accounted for in the study, even
though these could influence academic performance.

This study's conceptual framework is based on the assumption that there is a
relationship between the academic performance and student-athletes. Student-
athletes need to balance their time, not only for their practices, matches, and training
along with their personal life, but also for their academic performance. Notre Dame of
Trece Martirez required them to have a balance grade; if not followed, they would
need to stop being an athlete. Due to that rule, the pressure is on them. As a
student-athlete, their problems are mostly time management and balancing the
required grades while being an excellent player to represent the school on the sports
field. Because of that, we choose to study this topic, aiming for the institution to have
a consideration towards the student-athletes.
Definition of Terms
Academic Performance - Refers to a student ability to achieve
educational goals, evaluated through factors such as grades, test scores,
behavior, and overall academic adaptation.
Student-athlete - An individual who actively participates in both
academics and athletics, requiring them to manage coursework, training
sessions, competitions and personal responsibilities. These students must
effectively balance their educational and athletic commitments.
Dual Responsibilities - The combined academic athletic duties that
the student-athletes must handle, often presenting challenges in maintaining
strong academic performance.
Education - Refers to general knowledge of the student-athlete to have
