Understanding Connectivism in Digital Learning

Connectivism is a modern learning theory that emphasizes the importance of networks and nodes in the digital age, where traditional information navigation methods are no longer effective. It promotes flexibility and accessibility in online learning, allowing individuals to customize their learning experiences through diverse mediums. The theory advocates for adapting educational techniques to meet the varying needs of learners and encourages the creation of interconnected learning communities.

Connectivism: A knowledge learning theory for the digital age?

Our world is continuously evolving and creating sophisticated systems to improve

our lives to the extent that modern learning sources can come from non-human objects,
opinions, networks, and decision-making itself. It has reached a point where the
traditional ways of navigating and filtering information have been proven ineffective
because it is now widely diversified into sub-categories, specific fields and its subfields,
and different mediums to create and consume contents for learning in the web 2.0 era.
In these new ways of learning, a new theory of learning has been formulated called
“Connectivism”. The connectivist model describes learning communities as nodes which
are also part of a larger network. A successful network should have a vast range of
spectrum of point of views, openness, connections between its nodes, and autonomy.

Hence, making learning professional courses online possible and accessible to

all interested person. Aside from this, the addition of flexibility of time spent on learning
is a huge advantage to everyone because there are times when a person’s learning
capacity is limited to a certain amount of time. The varieties of learning materials and
mediums are now open to all nodes and networks that can be consumed in any form
possible whether it’s audio, written, video, or graphics. Since learning is different for
each individual, the wide range of choices can help the consumers find a customizable
learning source for their needs. Making learning more easy to consume but also
sophisticated in its creation.

As a conclusion, the connectivist model focuses on the varying needs of its

audience, how professionals and educators should adapt their techniques and
processes to the digital world, and why it is important to create nodes and networks for
everyone to join. Making all sources of information easy to consume and shareable to
all other networks.
