Influence of Online Video Platforms on Language Development
Online video platforms work as strong forces which determine
the language usage and learning methods of Generation Z users.
People who use YouTube TikTok and Instagram Reels experience
exposure to numerous speech patterns and linguistic trends
because these platforms contain various types of content (Barcena
et al., 2023). Through continuous exposure users learn to imitate
and adjust to new linguistic terms which primarily affects young
people.
Through interactive platform features users engage in
discussions that strengthen their language abilities with both
creators and other audience members. Gen Z members acquire
language abilities through their involvement in comment chats and
social media challenges along with live streaming interactions
which support informal speech patterns. According to Domingo &
Aguillon (2021) the continuous evolution of slang and linguistic
shortcuts can be attributed to the current process in everyday
conversations. Various critics believe that online platforms help
develop linguistic skills but concurrently promote superficial
language learning caused by short online content.
Through video content global access provides young users an
opportunity to learn about different communication styles across
cultures as well as multiple languages. Bilingual and
multilingual youth experiencing this linguistic phenomenon create
hybrid languages while also becoming more proficient at code-
switching (Garcia & Yousef, 2023). The communication habits of
Generation Z display adjustable patterns however they do not
employ standard linguistic framework properly. Since Gen Z
interacts with an ever-changing platform these digital spaces
shape their language development by encouraging diversity even
though they sacrifice formality on occasion.
Impact of Online Video Content on Formal Communication Skills
Benefits and drawbacks of extensive online video viewing
shape the formal communication skills of Generation Z in
essential ways. Santos (2020) underscores that regular viewing of
brief informal video content can lead to reduced abilities in
writing structured text and speaking articulately. Users often
duplicate social media communication styles through short
sentences and informal discourse patterns that later appear in
their professional and educational activities.
Torion & Bacio. (2024) demonstrate how bite-sized content
preferences create shorter attention spans while making it harder
for users to process complex written inputs. The move towards
alternative writing standards causes teachers to confront
problems with students' lack of skills in formal writing
capabilities especially in areas of grammar and logical
progression along with analytical reasoning. Students encounter
difficulties when shifting between digital conversational style
and proper academic writing due to assignments that assess their
structured arguments.
Research evidence indicates that properly managed online
videos present educational benefits. Media creators on YouTube
platforms show how they effectively teach difficult subjects
through dynamic content that enhances understanding and
verbalization abilities (Prudente, 2021). Traditional
instructional methods combined with educational videos create an
opportunity to teach proper language usage and show formal
communication methods to students.
Internet Slang and Its Effect on Academic and Professional
Communication
Gen Z uses internet slang from online videos to transform
their communication methods both in casual and official
interactions. Digital expressions merged with traditional
communication through slang terms that gain popularity from
TikTok and YouTube trends (Ricaforte, 2022). The digital culture
produces common linguistic expressions including "cap," "no
filter" and "slay" which appeal to younger demographics.
The new linguistic progress that supports creativity and
social bonding becomes a barrier for academic and professional
settings. Matias (2023) states that individuals who use online
slang multiple times face difficulties maintaining formal
language when writing academic pieces or conducting job
interviews. Consistent use of casual language has the potential
to generate confusion or challenges professional perception when
professionals use it in workplace discussions.
Internet slang demonstrates Gen Z's capacity to adapt and
think flexibly. Esteron (2021) explains that the ability to move
between informal digital communication and formal contexts
indicates linguistic dexterity. Professional adaptability
represents an essential capability that benefits workers entering
multi-team environments by enabling them to deliver attractive
and relevant messages.
FOREIGN LITERATURE (3 na)
The current study examined how social media language affected the communicative
competence and vocabulary in first year students of English at Mohamed Kheider
University of Biskra. The main problem of this research lies on the use of social
media and how it allowed people to communicate with each other, English as a
foreign language students were allowed to access information that was previously
unavailable. The major purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of social
media language on the communicative competence and vocabulary.
This research aimed to investigate how social media affected Generation Z's
communicative competence and vocabulary and how it was lacking through face-to-
face interactions. This study examined the impact of social media on Generation Z's
vocabulary learning, and how it affects their online and in-person relationships. It is
hypothesized that if social media language impacts the communicative competence
and vocabulary on Generation Z students, it will influence their social interactions. In
regards, a questionnaire is given to 30 students first year of English at Mohamed
Kheider University, in addition to a teacher interview submitted to 08 teachers of
English from the same university. The purpose of this research was to investigate
how social media effects the communicative competence and vocabulary of students
and how it influences their online and face-toface- interactions. The results showed
that EFL students were affected by social media and face difficulties in vocabulary
learning and that it is necessary to know the meaning of words used in social media.
Teachers agreed that social media language had a strong influence on classroom
communication, giving students a false image of the formed language and
introducing them to authentic everyday language. Generation Z needs more
exposure to daily life interaction away from technology and the platform should be
designed for educational purposes.

Language online: Investigating digital texts and practices
Carmen Lee, David Barton
routledge, 2013
In Language Online, David Barton and Carmen Lee investigate the impact of the
online world on the study of language. The effects of language use in the digital
world can be seen in every aspect of language study, and new ways of researching
the field are needed. In this book the authors look at language online from a variety
of perspectives, providing a solid theoretical grounding, an outline of key concepts,
and practical guidance on doing research. Chapters cover topical issues including
the relation between online language and multilingualism, identity, education and
multimodality, then conclude by looking at how to carry out research into online
language use. Throughout the book many examples are given, from a variety of
digital platforms, and a number of different languages, including Chinese and
English. Written in a clear and accessible style, this is a vital read for anyone new to
studying online language and an essential textbook for undergraduates and
postgraduates working in the areas of new media, literacy and multimodality within
language and linguistics courses.

UNTALAN
Gen Z is more likely to use images and videos to tell their stories, whether through
posts on Instagram, Snapchat Stories, or other platforms. Gen Z often creates
creative visual content such as memes, vlogs and TikTok, which have become an
important part of their communication culture. Changes in the way Gen Z
communicate as a result of social media are creating a unique communication
environment (Supratman, 2018).
In this ever-growing digital era, communication has undergone significant changes.
As one of the main platforms, Instagram plays a central role in Generation Z's
interaction with the outside world, especially with their idol figures. Generation Z,
who grew up in an era of advanced technology, uses Instagram as the main tool to
interact and build personal relationships with celebrities or their idols via direct
messages (DM). This phenomenon reflects how Generation Z uses DM as a typical
communication tool that has a significant impact on establishing personal
interactions with public figures they admire (Nuruzzahra et al., 2023).

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
FIGURE I. CONCEPTUAL PARADIGM
The conceptual model used in the study entitled “The Impact
of Online Videos to Gen Z's Language and Communication Process”
is developed according to the principle of using an independent
variable and a dependent variable.
The research contains independent variables, that consist of
online video platforms, video trends, internet slang usage, and
digital communication practices. These factors make up the main
components that shape how Gen Z uses digital platforms while
watching online videos.
Online video platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and
Instagram provide a continuous stream of diverse content that
influences users' communication preferences. Video trends which
frequently origin from viral content and creator-driven
challenges simultaneously drive linguistic adoption while
reshaping social interaction patterns. The emergence of Internet
slang from these trends results in a new vocabulary which Gen Z
members commonly use during their communication exchanges.
Digital communication methods through commenting and sharing and
audience engagement with creators foster informal conventional
language use.
The dependent variables measure the degree of influence that
digital interactions have on Gen Z language development and their
communication practices. Language and communication style
describe the expression methods through verbal and non-verbal
means that result from exposure to online media content. The
evaluation of writing and speaking formality focuses on
generating messages that are both grammatically sound and
organized while matching the appropriate context. People with
contextual adaptability can shift between formality and
informality in communication based on the circumstances at hand.

Internet access is considered to be a basic need, whereas increased speed is viewed as an
effective digital conduit, which is used to enhance efficiency and communication, particularly
through mobile apps. Generation Z wants content to be instantaneously accessible in audio (e.g.,
podcasts) and video, as well as segmented text to aid skimming, which is prevalently for online
site reading (e.g., blogs and social media). This generation is generally independent,
individualistic, and ambitious, as well as exude diversity in terms of culture, population group,
gender, and sexual orientation. It highlights how Generation Z consumes digital content,
particularly through online videos, podcasts, and social media. With internet access being a basic
need for this generation, they expect fast and efficient communication, shaping how they interact
with language. Online videos, which provide instant and engaging content, influence their
vocabulary, slang, and communication style. The preference for quick, skimmable content also
impacts their writing and speech patterns. Additionally, their diverse cultural background
contributes to the blending of different linguistic elements, further shaping the way Gen Z
communicates online.
According to Rodney Duffet (2020), this cohort seeks to be continually connected, and Internet
access is considered to be a basic need, whereas increased speed is viewed as an effective digital
conduit, which is used to enhance efficiency and communication, particularly through mobile
apps. This statement highlights the essential role of the internet for Gen Z, emphasizing how
constant connectivity is crucial for their daily lives. As digital natives, they view internet access
not just as a luxury but as a basic need. Faster internet speeds enhance their ability to engage
with content, particularly through mobile apps and online videos. These platforms influence their
language, as Gen Z adopts new slang, emojis, and memes from viral videos. The rapid
communication and interaction facilitated by high-speed internet foster the evolution of their
language, shaping their unique digital communication style and social dynamics.
According to Sunday, Ekemini Victor (2025), the role of digital in this era also has an impact on
hampering effectiveness of communication. Nevertheless, communication barriers from a
cultural aspect need to be seen as the complexity of cultural diversity that exists in Indonesia,
both language differences and other differences. The statement relates to the topic because it
highlights how digital advancements, including online videos, can create communication
barriers. Online videos play a major role in shaping Gen Z’s language and communication styles,
often incorporating slang, abbreviations, and foreign influences that may hinder effective
communication, especially in culturally diverse societies like Indonesia. Language differences
and varying communication norms across regions can be further complicated by Gen Z's
adaptation to digital trends. As a result, while online videos provide access to vast information,
they can also contribute to misunderstandings, reduced face-to-face interactions, and a shift in
traditional language structures.
According to Wibisono, Bambang et.al (2025), age is an important factor in language use. People
of different age brackets have different linguistic behaviour. The Gen Z ( defined as people born
between 1997 and 2012) have a linguistic culture which is different from that of the millennial
(born 1981–1996), as well as that of the Gen X, Boomers II and so forth (Turner, 2015). This
culture is further strengthened by the new technologies which provides the context for this kind
of communication. The statement is related to the topic because it emphasizes how age
influences language use and communication styles. Gen Z, having grown up in the digital era,
communicates differently from older generations, and online videos play a key role in shaping
their linguistic behavior. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube expose Gen Z to evolving slang,
abbreviations, and visual-based communication, which differ from traditional language
structures used by Millennials or Boomers. This digital influence reinforces their unique
linguistic culture, making their

Abstract:
This study explored the use of slang of Generation Z in the Philippines. It focused on
analyzing the sociolinguistic transformation of language particularly in Senior High
School and College students in selected schools in Metro Manila. It has been found
that Filipino Generation Z known as GenZers are still using the language patterns
like back formation, clippings, acronyms, metathesis, and relating to an icon.
Furthermore, this also revealed that GenZers have developed a language
transformation in a process of changing word to word, change in meaning and
creating expressions. It is recommended to further explore the study in looking in
depth the effects of WikaGenz in written discourses, the implication of messages
with the other generations, and its possible implications to sociolinguistic
phenomena. (Gime, A., & Macascas, C. (2020).
The framework matrix was used to determine the morphological processes underlying
Generation Z slang. Consequently, it was determined that word formation processes
such as coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, acronyms, affixation,
conversion, and multiple processes were utilized to create Generation Z slang. In
addition, the data revealed additional word formation processes, such as contraction,
reduplication, and spelling change. Most Filipino Generation Z slang word formation
was categorized as a change in spelling. Future researchers can gain a deeper
understanding of how the Filipino generation z's language is shaped and how it
differs from previous generations by examining linguistic patterns and word forms.
