Objectives:
1. Study and measure the Laser Diode I-P characteristics.
Tools and Equipment:
1. Visible LASER source
2. Optical power meter
Introduction:
A laser diode is a semiconductor device that emits coherent light when an
electric current is applied. It operates on the principle of stimulated emission,
producing a narrow, intense beam of monochromatic light.
Understanding the characteristics of Experiment 4 LASER Diode
characterization laser diodes is crucial for various applications, including
optical communication, laser pointers, and barcode scanners. The primary
goal of this experiment is to determine the relationship between the optical
output power (P) and the input current (I) of a laser diode, known as the P-I
curve. This helps to identify key characteristics of the laser diode, such as
threshold current and slope efficiency. Below the threshold current, the laser
diode operates like a light-emitting diode (LED) with spontaneous emission.
Beyond the threshold, the main type of emission is the stimulated emission,
resulting in a sharp increase in optical power output.
The I-P characteristics curve is typically similar to the one shown in Figure
below, where the output power is almost zero for input currents below the
threshold current Ith and increases almost linearly as the current increases
above the threshold value.

Steps:
1- Turn on the laser supply & Optical Power Meter.
2- Let the LASER & Optical meter face each other.
3- Change the i/p current of the LASER diode using the knob
4- Start with low input current & increase it in very small steps & measure &
record the optical output power using the optical power meter.
5- Plot the graph & Identify Ith from it and also the slope.

Now we will use these results and plot them on a graph.
For that we will use MATLAB
By using MATLAB for plotting the graph this is the result that we will get:
The slope for this graph is (2.991-1.669)/(16.89-13.93) = 0.4466
And Ith is around 11.91mA
