The Geochemical Cycle
Isotopic fractionation in the geochemical cycle
• In the lithosphere the geochemical cycle begin with the initial crystalization of a magma,
proceeds through the alteration and weathering of the igneous rock.
• The transportation and deposition of the material thus produced and continues through
diagenesis and lithification to metamorphism of successively higher grade until eventually by
anatexis and plaingenesis, magma is regenerated.
• The geochemical cycle may not be realized in practice at some stage it may be indefinitely
halted or short circuited or its direction reversed.
• The geochemical cycle is not closed, either materially or energetically.
• The surface receives an insignificant contribution of meteoritic matter.
• The surface receives energy from outside the earth in the form of solar radiation.
• The geochemical cycle provides a useful concept as a basis for the discussion of many aspects
of geochemistry.
