Mid Term Paper 2020

This document outlines the mid-term examination for the course CE-5122 Sediment Transport at the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar. It includes various questions on sediment transport phenomena, channel incision, sediment particle characteristics, Stoke's equation, and flow conditions in open channels. The exam is open book, allowing the use of textbooks and notes, and requires concise answers with necessary figures.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY PESHAWAR

MID TERM PAPER (ONLINE)
Subject: CE- 5122 SEDIMENT TRANSPORT
(Post Graduate Examination, Water Resources Engineering, Fall Semester 2020)

Time Allowed 2Hrs Max Marks 80

Note: -Attempt all the questions. Answer the questions to the point avoiding unnecessary explanations.
Assume any missing data. It's open book paper so books, class lectures, and notes are allowed to use.
Programmable calculators are not allowed. Draw the figures where necessary.

Q 1. (a) Why it is important to know the phenomenon of sediments transport and how it affects human life?
Discuss. (3, 4)
(b) What do you know about Channel Incision? What are its causes and how it affects the fluvial
geomorphology? (2, 3, 3)

Q 2. (a) Differentiate the sphericity and roundness of a sediment particle and what is their importance in the
fluvial hydraulics. (4, 3)
(b) What are well-sorted and poorly sorted sediments, how can we use the cumulative frequency curve
to do such classification of the sediments using the ψ (Si) scale? (2, 8)

Q 3. (a) Derive the Stoke’s equation to determine fall velocity for the sediment particles larger than 0.1mm
i.e Re > 0.1. (8)
(b) Measurements on gravel-bed stream were taken. The median particle size (d50) of the bed is 6mm. (ρs
= 2650 kg/m3). The dynamic viscosity of the fluid is 1.14 x 10-3 N-sec/m2. Determine the Shields
dimensionless grain diameter, D*, and the fall velocity of the particle having D* diameter. (5, 4)

Q 4. (a) Discuss figure # 1 regarding the incipient motion of a sediment particle. (8)
(b) A wide open-channel excavated in uniform material (ρs = 2650 kg/ m3) with d50 = 0.015 m has a slope
So = 1.9 x 10-3 and a depth of flow, D = 0.95 m. Determine that, is the particle on the channel bed stable?
Also, determine the size of the particle to remain in a stationary condition. Consider the Shields diagram
criteria for bed stability (Refer figure # 2). (7, 3)

Q 5. (a) On what slope should a 600 mm sewer be laid so that 0.17cumecs will flow when the sewer is half
full? What slope, if the sewer flows full? Use n = 0.013. (4, 4)
(b) In a natural stream, the flow velocity is 4.1 m/s and the observed flow depth is 0.8 m. What is the
most likely type of bedform with a movable bed? In what direction will the bedforms migrate (i.e.
upstream or downstream)? (3, 2)
