Lab No - 3431

Mr. Ashwath M N, a 24-year-old male, tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 using a rapid antigen test on April 14, 2021. The test is approved by ICMR and the State Health Department, indicating the absence of antigens but not completely ruling out infection. Limitations of the test include the possibility of false negatives and the need for confirmation via RT-PCR for symptomatic individuals.

SARS COV2 ANTIGEN TEST FOR : NEGATIVE
COVID19
ICMR & STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT APPROVED
COVID 19 RAPID ANTIGEN

Test description : This test is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for qualitative detection of specific antigens to SARS-CoV-2 (Severe
Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2). Sample should be Nasopharyngeal swab, other samples like throat swab, bronchoalveolar lavage
or sputum should be avoided.

Interpretation :

A. “ POSITIVE " results indicates the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the given specimen. A positive test should be considered as a true positive.
Detection of antigen does not rule out co-infection with other pathogens. A repeat test of freshly collected specimen may give different result
due to the following -
a. Viral load reduces day by day and one may clear virus as early as 4.3 days.
b. The new sample may have low viral load due to variable shedding of the virus.

B. “ NEGATIVE ” result indicates the absence of antigens of SARS-CoV-2 in the give specimen. However,it does not rule out the infection with
SARS-CoV-2 completely and as the level of the antigen may be beyond the detection limit of this assay and/or the quality specimen submitted
for testing. All symptomatic individuals testing negative through the rapid antigen test should be confirmed with a real-time PCR test.
“ NEGATIVE ” result may be seen due to -
a). False negativity associated with the test.
b). Test done too early or too late where the virus load is below detection limit.
c). Presence of Viral mutations.

Limitations of antigen testing

An antigen test can only reveal whether a person is currently infected with SARS-CoV-2. Before or after the infection has passed, antigens
won`t be present.
Since antigen testing doesn`t involve any processes of amplifying the virus or its genetic material, a swab sample may have too little antigen
to be detected. This could produce a false negative result. Suspected individuals who test negative for COVID-19 by rapid antigen test should
be definitely tested sequentially by RT-PCR to rule out infection, whereas a positive test should be considered as a true positive and does not
need reconfirmation by RT-PCR test.
