10.2b WKSHT Simple Events

The document consists of a series of probability problems related to simple events, requiring students to assign probabilities and calculate outcomes based on given scenarios. It includes exercises on rolling dice, tossing coins, and selecting items from groups, as well as basic arithmetic calculations. Additionally, there is a self-assessment section for students to evaluate their understanding of computing probabilities.

10.2b - Simple Events

For problems #1 – 8, assign a probability of 0, 0.5, or 1 to each event.

1) A baby is born with purple hair. 2) You roll an even number on a die.

3) You roll an 8 on a standard six-sided die. 4) The month of November has exactly 30 days.

5) A coin toss comes up heads. 6) The month of December has exactly 30 days.

7) You attend Elk Ridge Middle right now. 8) A baby is born and it’s a boy.

9) a. There are three choices of jellybeans- grape, cherry and orange. If the probability of getting
a grape is 0.1 and the probability of getting cherry is 0.2, what is the probability of getting
orange?

b. Make a probability model for this situation. Outcome Probability

10) There is a bag of blue, green and red chips. There is a 12% possibility of randomly picking a
blue chip and a 25% chance of randomly picking a red chip. What is the probability of picking
a green chip?

11) On a fair spinner there are three colors- blue, green and red. There is a 1/3 chance of the
spinner landing on green and a 1/6 chance that the spinner lands on red. What is the
probability that the spinner will land on blue?
12) There are 18 socks in a drawer with 5 red socks, 6 blue, 4 white, and the rest are neon pink.
a. Make probability model for this situation. Outcome Frequency Probability

b. What is the probability of choosing

a neon pink sock.

13) There are 25 people in a room. Nine of them were born in Utah, 6 of them were born in
California, and the rest of them were born in Idaho. Find the probability of choosing someone
who was born in Idaho or California.

14) There are 50 candy bars in a bowl with 15 Snickers, 4 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, 18 Milky
Ways, and the rest are Heath bars. Find the probability of choosing a Snickers or a Heath.

Do the following WITHOUT using a calculator.

15) −6 − 4 16) −8 + 10 17) 4 − 12

18) 2+7 19) −16 − (+4) 20) −11 + 6

21) 9 − (−15) 22) 16 + (−8) 23) 3 −− 7

24) 8 −+ 15 25) −5 + + 10

26) Self-Assessment: 1 2 3 4 I can compute the probability of simple events.
