Lesson 2: Boring Tools

What are Boring Tools?


-​ This is the process of enlarging a hole that has already been drilled (or cast).

There are 3 types of Bits:


Auger Bit
-​ Tool used to make a hole in wood.
Expansive Bit
-​ Tool used to drill holes of various sizes in wood.
Drill Bit
-​ Tool used for boring holes either in metals, wood or plastic.

Holding Tools
C-clamp
-​ Used for holding together pieces of lumber while working.
Bench vise
-​ Used to hold materials or tools in place.

Miscellaneous Tools
Oil Stone
-​ Used for sharping edge cutting tools such as “Chisel”.
File or Rasp
-​ Used for smoothening metal and wood surfaces.
Paint Brush
-​ Used to apply paint or varnish.

Power Tools
Sander
-​ Portable power tool used for sanding furniture pieces.
Jigsaw
-​ Used primarily for cutting curved or irregular and shapes from wood surfaces.
Circular Saw
-​ Used for many types of cutting particularly on large panel stock.
Electric Drill
-​ Used to drill holes in various materials.

What is Personal Protective Equipment? (PPE)


-​ To minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace inguries and illnesses.
Results from:

●​ Electrical
●​ Mechanical
●​ Any other workplace hazards

PPE items:
●​ Gloves
●​ Safety glasses
●​ Shoes
●​ Earplugs/muffs
●​ Hard hats
●​ Respirators/Coreralls
●​ Vest and full body suits

Goggles
-​ To protect your eyes from harmful liquids.
Ear protectors
-​ To protect your ears against frequency noises.
Face mask
-​ To prevent inhalation of paint.
Gloves
-​ To protect hands while working.
Apron
-​ To protect the worker against flying debris.

Lesson 3: Carpentry Tools


-​ Carpentry tools is a device used for Carpentry. Each tool has its own function and is
used by carpenters.

Hard Tools or Types of Saws:


Crosscut saw
-​ Saw with a handle at each end, used for cutting across the grain of Timber.
Hack Saw
-​ Consists of a tough blade, wire or chain. Used to cut through material.
Keyhole Saw
-​ Has smaller and fine blades.
Chisel
-​ Used for making many things. Making a hole in a part of wood to make a joint.
Types of Hammers:
Hammer
-​ Delivering a blow (a sudden impact). Used for nails, fit parts, metal, and break apart
objects.
Claw Hammer
-​ Hammer with one side of the head split. Used for extracting nails.
Ball-peer hammer
-​ “Machenist’s hammer”. Used for metal working.
Sledge hammer
-​ Large, flat and made of metal. This applies more force than other hammers.

Other tools:
Axe
-​ For cutting trees or cutting logs.
Jack Plane
-​ Tool for smoothing.
Block Plane
-​ Used for planning across the end grain of wood.
Mallet
-​ Large, usually wooden. Used for hitting a Chisel. Also used for lifting a croquet or polo
ball.

Measuring tools
Tape Measure
-​ Used for measuring.
Try Square
-​ Used to check and make right angles in construction work.
Framing Square
-​ “Steel Square”. Used as a straight edge, finding right angles and making cut-off work.
Sliding T-bevel
-​ Usually made of plastic or wood. Connected to a metal blade with a wing nut.
Spirit Level
-​ “Bubble bevel”. Used to indicate whether a surface is Louver (Horizontal) or Plumb
(Vertical)
Calipers
-​ Compass with inward or outward-facing points.

Marking Tools - process of transferring.


Chalk line
-​ “Chalk box”. Used to make long straight lines on flat surfaces.
Marking gauge
-​ “Scratch gauge”. Scribble a line parallel to a reference edge or surface.
Pencil
-​ For writing and drawing.
Marking knife
-​ “Stricting knife”. Woodwork layout tool. Used to scribble a line.
