The Sam Houston State University Student Government Association serves as the official voice of the student body; and Sam Houston State Universitys current Student Guidelines, by omission, allows for the discrimination of students on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity; and No student attending the multicultural institution of Sam Houston State University should, directly or indirectly, face prejudice or discrimination because of their Race, Creed, Color, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, or Ethnic Origin; and All students, including the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning, and Allied (Hereafter referred to as LGBTQA) community, deserve to be respected and acknowledged in the universitys stated goal (Pg. 5, University Goals, #6) to promote and support diversity and provide equitable opportunities for minorities; and Sam Houston State University has an obligation to promote all students intellectual, social, and leadership growth and to protect the rights of all students; and Protecting students against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity will facilitate beneficial cultural exchanges among student organizations and improve the campus climate, a process that is crucial to a stimulating academic environment; therefore That the Sam Houston State University Student Government Association urge the Division of Student Services to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the Student Guidelines handbook, specifically under the section Student Organizations Policy on pages 54-55, to be effective immediately; and That an updated Sam Houston State University Student Guidelines handbook be printed, upon expiration of the current handbook, listing sexual orientation and gender identity under discrimination elements, and That copies of this resolution be sent to President Dana Gibson, Dean of Students John Yarabeck, Vice President of Student Services Frank Parker, Executive Director of Campus Activities and Leadership Initiatives Leah Mulligan, Associate Director of Student Activities Angie Taylor, and The Houstonian and Channel 7 News.
