Exercise II: Seismic Interpretation Due March 8th Purpose: To learn to interpret seismic data from a geologic perspective

Posted on VNet is a 2D seismic line shot during a marine survey off the southern coast of Atlantis. The basement in this area is all igneous, and everything above this is sedimentary. The vertical scale on this line is TWT (two-way travel time). Print this line or complete this assignment digitally. Part I: Seismic Picking use tracing paper or Adobe Illustrator, etc. to do the following tasks. Use a separate sheet or create a new document for each task. Be sure to label each sheet accordingly. Task 1. Mark the seafloor across the entire seismic line Task 2. Pick any faults present Task 3. There is a prominent reflection at 2.2s on the right hand (proximal) side of this seismic line. Interpret and mark this horizon across the entire seismic line. Task 4. Circle any lapouts, stating what type of lapout for each. Task 5. Mark any correlative unconformities Task 6. Color possible sand intervals yellow, and possible shale intervals blue Part II: Depths and Thicknesses assume the following velocities: water = 1,500m/s; sandstone = 2,500 m/s; shale = 2,000 m/s Task 1. At what water depths is the seafloor at both the proximal and distal ends of this seismic line? Proximal: _____________ Distal: ________________

Task 2. What is the maximum thickness of shale package A? What happens to this shale as you move land-ward? Thickness: _____________

Task 3. What is the vertical resolution of sand package B in this data? Assume this data was shot at 60 Hz. Resolution: _____________ Task 4: What type of fault is Fault C? What is its magnitude of offset? Type: __________________ Offset: _________________ Task 5. Based on your basement horizon pick (Part I, Task 3) estimate the overall thickness of sedimentary fill. Thickness: ______________ Task 6. On a clean sheet, mark where the oil window and gas window might be. Questions: 1) Do you think this basin was deposited syn- or post tectonics? Why?

2) What locations on this seismic line would be prospective areas for hydrocarbon accumulation? Where would the source, reservoir, and migration route for the petroleum system be? What are some assumptions you have to make to call this a petroleum system?
