Wish for city of the future takes shape at TED

Website lets people shine light on dark secrets

LONG BEACH, California, March 2, (AFP): People around the world share their deep secrets with Frank Warren and he, in turn, reveals them to all. Confessions drawn, pasted or written on postcards flow relentlessly into his mailbox and Warren provides as many as possible with time in the spotlight at his website, PostSecret.com. Ive never been a person growing up that people told their secrets to, Warren told AFP after a presentation at the prestigious TED conference that wraps in southern California on Friday. In my life now, people dont walk up to me and tell me secrets, but I never get tired of getting postcards. I still go to the post box early. The Maryland man described himself as a typical suburban dad and small business owner whose life was turned around by a project launched in 2004 as a diversion from his lucrative but unsatisfying document delivery company. Warren began by printing 3,000 postcards and handing them out in the Washington DC area, asking people to anonymously share a heartfelt secret they had never told anyone. The idea spread virally, with people making or buying their own postcards and sending them to PostSecret from countries around the world. Warren showed a postcard made from half of a Starbucks coffee paper cup and bearing the message I give decaf to customers who are rude to me. Another postcard was from someone who confided I used to work with a bunch of uptight religious people so sometimes I didnt wear panties and just smiled and chuckled to myself. One confession arrived in the form of a sealed envelope bearing a message that inside were the torn bits of a suicide note I didnt use - I feel like the happiest man on Earth now. A postcard bearing a collage of pictures of Hollywood actors bore a message that one of them was the father of my son, he pays me a lot to keep his secret. Many secrets sent to the website involve loneliness, self-harm, or eating disorders, according to its creator. One of the biggest surprises is that when we find the strength to share a deep secret, instead of making us weird it connects us to our deepest humanity, Warren said. Everyone has a secret that could break your heart. Warren displayed a picture of him next to a pyramid of a half million postcards bearing secrets. He updates PostSecret.com every Sunday, trying to create a theme with the confessions. I tapped into something full of mystery and wonder, Warren said. Secrets can remind us of the countless human dramas playing out in the lives of people around us. PostSecret claims the distinction of being the most visited advertising-free blog on the Internet and is credited with inspiring a student in Canada to launch IFoundYourCamera.net website that connects people with lost pictures. Warren supports the website with money from his document shipping business, and successful books featuring collections of confessions. Some PostSecret postcards have made it to the Museum of Modern Art.

A woman uses her iPhone on March 1, in Washington, DC. More American adults now own smartphones than basic mobile phones, according to a survey released on Thursday. The Pew Research Centers Internet & American Life Project survey found that smartphone penetration has increased significantly among nearly every major demographic group in the United States. According to the survey, nearly half or 46 percent of Americans aged 18 and older owned a smartphone as of February while 41 percent owned a basic mobile phone and 12 percent did not own a mobile device. The innovation group TED has given its coveted annual prize for the first time to an idea the city of the future. The $100,000 prize money, normally awarded to an individual, will be divided into 10 grants allocated for the top ideas submitted at thecity2.org, a platform where organizers hope to develop

an earth-friendly City 2.0. Many of us in the TED community dont want this thought of as talk, TED curator Chris Anderson told the conference late Wednesday. We try to turn one of these ideas into a spectacular piece of action... An idea on which, arguably, a sustainable future depends. More than half the worlds population resides in cities, where living close together in smaller spaces means reducing the energy used for driving and homes while more easily making per-

sonal connections, according to economist Edward Glaeser, a TED member who collaborated on the idea. Cities are no enemies of the environment, they are friends of the environment, Glaeser reasoned. Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes took part in the TED Prize session, sharing his set of commandments for a city of the future. Such a city must be environmentallyfriendly, have high-capacity transportation, integrate people from all demographics, and use innovative technolo-

gy. IBM has worked with Rio de Janeiro to use technology to better handle the challenges of running the city, whether managing traffic flow, coordinating public works crews or anticipating disruptive storms. A city of the future is a city that cares about its citizens, Paes said. At the end of the day, when you talk about the city, you talk about a gathering of people. The prize wish that emerged was to give people living in cities the power to change them for the better, according to Anderson. To that end, TED launched the website thecity2.org as a platform where citizens can form local groups, share ideas, and connect with companies large or small that can provide resources for plans that emerge. I think we are about to see urbanization happen at an unprecedented rate, said Autodesk chief executive Carl Bass, who offer to supply free software tools for engineering or designing cities of the future. By the end of the session offers from TED members included eco-friendly home designs, connections to venture capitalists, and even free space in a building Keen Footwear bought to house its headquarters in Portland, Oregon. The idea of the platform is to involve people on the ground in everything, Anderson said. We steered away from utopian ideas gone wrong.

Engineering professor Donald Sadoway on Thursday used an oldschool chalk board at the prestigious TED gathering to write the formula for a liquid battery that could one day cut the need for new power plants.

The way things stand, electricity demand must be in constant balance with supply, Sadoway told the techsavvy audience in southern California. Inexpensive batteries made from liquid metal could store electricity from solar panels, wind farms, or existing generation facilities and save it for when it is most needed. That would be a major change from todays consume-it-now-or-lose-it systems. The battery is the enabling device here, he said. With it we could draw electricity from the sun even when the sun doesnt shine. Sadoway and his team of students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology were so confident in their creation that they started Liquid Metal Battery Corporation and plan to have bistrotable size models out in two years. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is among the companys backers. The company plans to eventually bring to market a liquid battery the size of a 40-foot shipping container and capable of holding enough electricity to serve the daily needs of 200 typical US households. You could have these batteries in the basements of buildings drinking up power in the wee hours, Sadoway said. It means we dont have to build more plants, power lines just for peak use, he continued. The limits are way out there, not only in terms of what it can do for renewables. The key metals in the battery are common vanadium and magnesium, the professor explained as he chalked a basic chemical equation on the board. TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a series of conferences designed to present cutting-edge ideas. Speakers are given only 18 minutes to give deliver their pitch.
