A tie bar of cross - sectional area 1000mm2 is subjected to an axial tensile load of 70 kN. Find the normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane the normal to which makes an angle of 300 with the axis of the bar. Find also the max. values of these stresses and the planes on which they act. [20] 2. (a) Represent the max. strain theory graphically (b) Using this theory nd f, if the principal stresses at a point in an elastic material are 3f (tensile) 2f (tensile) and f (compressive). The elastic limit = 200 MPa and 1/m = 0.3. [8+12] 3. A solid shaft, 80mm in dia. transmits 120 H.P. running at 180 R.P.M. Calculate the max. intensity of shear stress induced and the angle of twist for a length of 6m. Take N = 8X104 N/mm2 . [20] 4. A spring loaded safety valve of 50mm dia. is to work against a boiler pressure of 8N/mm2 . Determine the lift of the valve when the mean dia. of spring is 160mm, number of turns 10 and wire dia. 20mm. Take N = 9 104 N/mm2 . [20] 5. A chimney of 45m height tapers in dia. from 4m at base to 2m at top. The internal dia at base is 3m. The horizontal wind pressure is 2kN/m2 . The self weight of chimney is 2500kN. Calculate the max and minimum stress intensities at the base. Sketch the variation. [20] 6. Determine the forces in the members EF, DE, and CD of the truss as shown in Figure 1. [20] 7. A compound cylinder is to be formed by shrinking one tube on to another. Before the uid is admitted, the internal and external dia. of the compound cylinder are 120mm and 200mm and the dia. at the junction is 160mm. Calculate the necessary dierence in dia of the two tubes at the common surface before shrinking on, so as to produce a radial pressure of 8N/mm2 , also calculate the minimum temperature to which the outer tube should be heated before it can be slipped on. 1 Take E = 200GN/m2 m = 0.3 and = 6.2 106 / 0 c. [20] 8. A beam of rectangular section, 60mm wide and 100mm deep in subjected to a B.M. of 12KN-m. The trace of the plane of loading is inclined at 45 to the Y-axis in gure2. Locate the neutral axes of the section. Calculate the max bending stress induced in the section. Verify the result by an alternate solution. [20] 1 of 2 Max Marks:100
