I B.Tech.(CCC) Supplimentary Examinations, June 2008 MECHANICS OF SOLIDS (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. A tie bar of cross - sectional area 1000mm2 is subjected to an axial tensile load of 70 kN. Find the normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane the normal to which makes an angle of 300 with the axis of the bar. Find also the max. values of these stresses and the planes on which they act. [20] 2. Using: (a) maximum shear strain energy theory and

(b) maximum strain theory nd the magnitude of minor principal stress in a steel member,if at a point the major principal stress is 20N/mm2 (tensile) and the minor principal stress is compressive. Take Poissons ratio = 1/3. [10+10] 3. A propeller shaft 200 mm dia. transmits 3000 H.P. at 240 R.P.M. The propeller weighing 50 kN is carried by the shaft overhanging the support by 40 cm. The propeller thrust is 150 kN. Calculate the max. direct and shear stress induced in the cross-section of the shaft. Find also the planes on which they act. [20] 4. A spring loaded safety valve of 50mm dia. is to work against a boiler pressure of 8N/mm2 . Determine the lift of the valve when the mean dia. of spring is 160mm, number of turns 10 and wire dia. 20mm. Take N = 9 104 N/mm2 . [20] 5. A short C.I. Pillar 80mm in external dia and 10mm thick carrys a load of 200kN. If the load deviates from the center by 20mm calculate the extreme intensities of stresses induced in the section. What deviation will just cause tension in the pillar? Sketch the stress distribution. [20] 6. Analyse the truss shown in the Figure 6 by the method of joints. [20]

7. A compound cylinder is formed by shrinking one tube on to another, the nal dimensions being, internal diameter 120 mm, external diameter 240 mm, diameter at junction 180 mm. if after shrinking on, the radial pressure at the common surface is 8N/mm2 , calculate the initial hoop stresses across the sections of the inner and outer tubes. If a uid under a pressure of 60N/mm2 , is admitted inside the compound cylinder, calculate the nal stresses set up in the sections of the pipes. [20] 8. What do you understand by circle of inertia? Using the same obtain graphically the principal moments of inertia for an unequal angle section 60 40 6mm .[20]
