1 Introduction

1.1 Equipment supplied


1.1.a Otodynamics Calibration Unit
1 x Otodynamics test cavity
2 x BNC connector cable
(for use with an oscilloscope)
1 x BNC 4mm Y adaptor
(for use with a multi meter)
1 x 8-pin silver cable
10 x DPC coupler tubes for UGD probes
10 x TPC coupler tubes for UGS probes
1 x Calibration Kit CD
1 x Carry case

1.2 Measurement options


1.2.a The Otodynamics Calibration Unit can be used with either an
oscilloscope or high quality digital multi meter. Both device
types should be calibrated to ensure accurate measurement.

1.2.b Multi meter requirements


1.2.c The multi meter used must give be a ‘True RMS’ reading
device, capable of accurately measuring at 1kHz. It must
be capable of accurate measurement of a signal with a crest
factor of 1.43 (3.08dB).
1.2.d It is recommended that meters manufactured by Fluke or
Agilent are used for this measurement.

1.3.c EZ•Screen software note


1.3.d If you need to install EZ•Screen from the CD, because the
customer’s PC/Laptop is not available, use:

1.3.e Otoport firmware information


1.3.f Firmware with the calibration function included is provided on
the CD. Firmware version must be as shown in the following
table or later versions. Otherwise, the firmware will need
updating from the CD.
1.3.g To check the device firmware, navigate to the About area:
Otoport Models: Lite, DP, DP+TE, Otocheck
• Press Left menu key (Config) during switch on
• Navigate to System > System Info > About
Otoport Models: Screener, Advance/Clinical
• Switch on Otoport. Navigate to System > About

1.3.i Important Notes:


1) During firmware update of older Otoport models, it
may not be possible to retain data stored or device settings
during the update process. It is recommended that data is
downloaded first and that important settings are noted.
2) Otolink version V2.12.0.0 or later should be used
to upgrade the Otoport firmware. This Otolink version is
supplied on the Calibration Unit CD. Note: See firmware
upgrade information sheet for details.

2 Preparing the Calibration Unit

2.0.a Connect the 8 pin silver cable provided to the Calibration


Unit.
2.0.b The arrow (fig 1) at the front of the 8-pin plug indicates the
position of the ‘key’ and should be aligned with the top of the
Calibration Unit socket, which has a ‘key way’ (fig 2).

2.0.c It is possible to feel when the plug key is aligned as it will
mate with the socket easily. Push the plug into the socket
until it hits the end stop. DO NOT force in the plug. Screw up
the knurled sleeve locking nut in a clockwise direction until
finger tight (fig 3).

2.0.d To disconnect the cable after use, unscrew the knurled


sleeve in an anticlockwise direction (fig 4) until the thread is
disengaged.
2.0.e Then gently pull the plug out from the Calibration Unit socket
(fig 5).

2.0.f Important Note:


Do NOT attempt to screw or unscrew the plug by holding the
main plug body (fig 6) (smooth chrome section). This will
result in damage to the plug and will invalidate the warranty.

2.1 Oscilloscope use
2.1.a Adjust the oscilloscope for auto triggering, DC coupled input
with a time base of 1ms per division. Set the vertical scale to
0.1V per division.
2.1.b Make a peak to peak voltage measurement.
2.1.c Connect the two BNC connectors to the Calibration Unit (fig
7) and connect the cables to the oscilloscope.

2.2 Multi meter use


2.2.a Select voltage AC measurement. Select range to measure a
signal around 65mV.
2.2.b Make an RMS voltage measurement.
2.2.c Connect the BNC 4mm Y adaptor to the Calibration Unit (fig
8) and plug in the multi meter leads.

3 Otoport calibration check

3.0.a Ensure you have the:

l Otoport to be checked
l Probe(s) used with the equipment
l Calibration Unit and accessories
3.0.b Note: If the Otoport is configured to use
login security, you will need to obtain an
Admin user password from the equipment
administrator.

3.1 Output Channel Tests


3.1.a Connect the Otoport to the Calibration Unit
with the 8-pin silver cable.
3.1.c Ensure that Channel 1 (Ch 1) on the Calibration Unit is
connected to the measurement equipment used.
3.1.d Turn on your Otoport and navigate to the About area:
Otoport Models: Lite, DP, DP+TE, Otocheck
• Press Left menu key (Config) during switch on
• Navigate to System > System Info > About
Otoport Models: Screener, Advance/Clinical
• Switch on Otoport. Navigate to System > About

3.1.e The Otoport will automatically detect the Calibration Unit and
begin to output a test tone. The message Outputting test
tone (fig 9) will appear on the Otoport screen and a 1kHz
sine wave will be output.

3.1.f Record the output from Channel 1 test tone using your
measurement device.
3.1.g Ensure that Channel 2 (Ch 2) on the Calibration Unit is
connected to your measurement device and repeat the
measurement for Channel 2.
3.1.h Select Cancel to stop outputting tones.

3.1.1 Results

3.1.1.b Note:
The calibration output tone on the Otoport is periodically
interrupted. The multi meter reading may therefore vary
slightly during the measurement.
3.1.1.c If the measurements are not in this range then the OAE
equipment will need service. Please contact Otodynamics
support.

3.2 High stim cutout check
3.2.a The Otoport has an independent mechanism which stops all
output from the device if the output voltage exceeds a limit.
3.2.b When connected to the Calibration Unit this limit can be
deliberately exceeded in order to confirm the function of the
high stim cut out.
3.2.c To check the high stim cutout:
3.2.d Connect the Otoport to the Calibration Unit with the 8-pin
silver cable.
3.2.e Ensure that Channel 1 on the Calibration Unit is connected to
the measurement equipment used.
3.2.f Turn on your Otoport and navigate to the About area:
Otoport Models: Lite, DP, DP+TE, Otocheck
• Press Left menu key (Config) during switch on
• Navigate to System > System Info > About
Otoport Models: Screener, Advance/Clinical
• Switch on Otoport. Navigate to System > About
3.2.g The screen will show ‘Outputting test tones’ and a calibration
signal will be output and seen on your measurement device.
3.2.h Press the right arrow key on the Otoport keypad. The
message Cutout Test (fig 10) will appear on the Otoport.

3.2.i The calibration signal voltage should then go to less than


5 mV as the signal is cut. If not, the device should be
serviced by Otodynamics.

3.2.j Select Cancel and attempt to start an OAE test (see manual
for details).
3.2.k Confirm that the following message is displayed and that it is
not possible to start a test.
Instrument Fault! Turn off instrument, then run systems
tests.
3.2.l Note: There is not a fault. This test simulates a fault
condition.
3.2.m Turn the device off and then on again (this resets the cut out
mechanism).
3.2.n Confirm that the Instrument Fault message is now not
shown and that the test now starts.
3.2.o Disconnect the Calibration Unit.
3.2.p If the device does not behave as described then please
contact Otodynamics support.

3.3 Input Channel test


3.3.a Disconnect the Calibration Unit from the measurement
device. It will now be used to loopback the output signal to
the input.
3.3.b Connect the Otoport to the Calibration Unit with the 8-pin
silver cable.
3.3.c Turn on your Otoport and navigate to the Probe area:
Otoport Models: Lite, DP, DP+TE, Otocheck
• Press Left menu key (Config) during switch on
• Navigate to Probe Test
Otoport Models: Screener, Advance/Clinical
• Switch on Otoport. Navigate to Probe > Probe Test
3.3.d Ignore the message to place the probe in a cavity and select
OK. Note: The Calibration Unit is used instead of a probe
here. 10
3.3.1 Results
3.3.1.a The New values listed should be within the range below.

3.3.1.b Note: You may need to select Details on the Otoport screen
to see the values stored.

3.4 Probe checks


3.4.a To check the probe supplied with the Otoport and test the
device performance, follow the Probe checks section in the
appropriate user manual (supplied on CD) for the device type
being tested.
3.4.b Unplug the Otoport from the calibration unit and plug in the
probe supplied with the device.
3.4.c Run the Probe, Cavity, Occlusion and Real Ear tests.
3.4.d Tip:
If the cavity or occlusion tests fail, there may be a problem
with the probe or the Otoport. To isolate the fault you can
run the same tests with the Calibration Unit connected, which
loops the system output back to the input.
If the noise or artefacts are no longer present when testing
with the Calibration Unit, the probe is likely to be the cause of
the fault. To confirm the fault, retest the probe following the
instructions from the manual. If the probe is faulty it will need
to be returned to Otodynamics.

4 Echoport calibration check

4.0.a Ensure you have:

l Echoport to be checked
l Probe(s) used with the equipment
l Calibration Unit and accessories
l USB Echoport test program V1.1.0.27 (supplied
on CD - and installed under Start > Programs >
Otodynamics during EZ•Screen or ILO V6 installation)
l PC/Laptop running EZ•Screen; ideally this would be
the PC used with the Echoport equipment, but this is
not essential
4.0.b Note: If EZ•Screen software is configured to use login
security, you will need to obtain a user password from the
equipment administrator.

4.1 Output channel test


4.1.a Ensure that Channel 1 (Ch 1) on the Calibration Unit is
connected to the measurement equipment used.
4.1.b Open the USB Echoport Test program. Either run the
program from the PC ‘Start’ menu (Start > Programs >
Otodynamics) or copy the program executable from the
calibration unit CD onto the customer’s PC or another PC/
laptop. Double click the program to run it.
4.1.c Add your initials and click OK.

4.1.d Ensure the program reports Device present! (fig 11).
4.1.e Select the System checks tab and ensure Amp 1 is selected
(fig 12).

4.1.f Select Stimulus Output and click OK to the confirmation


message.
4.1.g Output tones will be delivered until the progress bar is full.
4.1.h Record the output voltage from the Channel 1 test tone using
your measurement device.
4.1.i Click Stimulus Output again if necessary until a
measurement has been taken.
4.1.j Ensure that Channel 2 on the Calibration Unit is connected to
your measurement device and repeat the measurement for
Channel 2.
4.1.k For Echoport ILO292-II, repeat the Output channel test for
probe socket 2 (fig 13). Select Amp 2 in the System Checks
tab (fig 12).

4.1.1 Results

4.1.1.a If the measurements are not in this range, then the OAE
equipment will need service. Please contact Otodynamics
support.

4.2 Input Channel test


4.2.a Disconnect the Calibration Unit from the measurement
device. It will now be used to loopback the output signal to

4.2.b Connect the Echoport to the Calibration Unit with the 8-pin
silver cable.
4.2.c Connect the Echoport to the PC/Laptop running EZ•Screen
(use the USB cable supplied with the equipment).
4.2.d Login to EZ•Screen software.
4.2.e Select the Probe button (fig 14) on the main screen.

4.2.f Select Run calibration test.


4.2.g Ignore the message to place the probe in a cavity and select
OK.

4.3 Probe checks


4.3.a To check the probe(s) supplied with the Echoport and
thoroughly tests the device, follow the Routine weekly
system checks section in the Echoport manual (supplied on
CD).
4.3.b Unplug the Echoport from the calibration box and plug in the
probe(s) supplied with the device.
4.3.c Conduct the tests on all the probes supplied with the
Echoport.
4.3.d Tip:
If the cavity or occlusion tests fail, there may be a problem
with the probe or the Echoport. To isolate the fault you can
run the same tests with the Calibration Unit connected, which
loops the system output back to the input.
If the noise or artefacts are no longer present when testing
with the Calibration Unit, the probe is likely to be the cause of
the fault. To confirm the fault, retest with the probe following
instructions from the manual. If the probe is faulty it will need
to be returned to Otodynamics.

5 Care of your Calibration Unit

5.0.a The Otodynamics Calibration Unit is robustly constructed but


is a precision device so should be handled with care.

l Do not drop the Calibration Unit


l Do not leave in strong sunlight
l Do not expose to high temperatures
l Do not touch the connector socket pins by hand
l Take care to locate the connection of the 8-pin cable
and BNC connectors
l Store the calibration equipment in the case provided
5.0.b For quality assurance purposes, the Calibration Unit
should be checked at regular intervals, ideally before each
calibration check session and annually at a minimum to
ensure it is functioning correctly.
5.0.c Using a multi meter, make the following checks, ensuring the
Calibration Unit is NOT connected to OAE equipment:
l Resistance between signal and ground on both BNC
connectors = 2.75kΩ (±1%)
l Resistance between BNC signals = 49.5kΩ (±1%)
l Resistance between BNC grounds = 52kΩ (±1%)

6 Obtaining service

6.0.a Otodynamics will replace or service your Calibration Unit free


of charge during the warranty period, where the fault is due
to a manufacturing issue. Servicing after that period will be
provided at reasonable cost.
6.0.b If you have a problem with your Calibration Unit, contact
Otodynamics for advice before returning the item for repair.
You will be asked for your unit serial number, which can be
found on the label on the unit.
