COUPLING CAPACITOR VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS/CAPACITOR
VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER

1. GENERAL

These specifications cover the requirements for design, manufacturer, works


testing, supply, installation, site testing and commissioning of CCVTs and CVTs
for addition of 220 kV switchyard.

2. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

2.1 General

The CCVTs/CVTs shall be capable of withstanding the severe environmental


conditions of outdoor operation experienced in tropical areas. The equipment
shall be designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with latest issued of

relevant IEC Publications.

The CCVTs/CVTs shall be single phase units, oil-filled type. Each advice shall be
connected between the line and ground and shall be equipped with two secondary
windings. Under no condition of operation shall be complex wave be generated
-2
which will interfere with proper operation of the relays. Each unit shall be
furnished with ferro-resonance suppression devices.

The CCVTs shall be used for PLC single coupling on transmission lines and shall
be equipped with bushings for connection of PLC coupling equipment and, as
required, with necessary carrier accessories. The carrier coupling accessories shall

include the drain coil, the arresters or spark gap across the drain coil for over-
voltage protection, external accessible grounding switch across the drain-coil and

a fitting for carrier frequency cable.

The units shall consist of a capacitor divider unit and an electromagnetic unit
properly designed and interconnected. A protective device shall be incorporated

in the CCVT/CVT for the purpose of limiting over-voltage which may appear
across one or more of its components, and to prevent sustained ferro-resonance
(harmonic or sub-harmonic oscillation of the device or its associated burden).

Each CCVT/CVT shall be supplied complete with corona free clamp type HV
terminal connectors, grounding terminals, secondary terminal boxes and
supporting steel structures, as specified.

2.2 Equipment Parameters

The CCVTs/CVTs shall be designed in accordance with the following ratings.

17) The temperature rise of a CCVT/CVT at the specified voltage, rated


frequency, rated burden at any power factor between 0.8 lagging and
unity, shall not exceed 45 K above an ambient of 50°C

18) The total nominal stack capacitance of high voltage capacitors of


CCVTs/CVTs shall be greater than or equal to the value indicated in item
14, under the specified conditions with a tolerance of (+10%, -5%).

19) When the CCVT/CVT is supplied at 120% of rated voltage and with a
substantially zero burden, has its secondary terminals short-circuited, and
the short-circuit is suddenly removed, the peak of the secondary voltage
shall revert t a value which does not differ from its normal value by more
than 10% after ten cycles of rated frequency.

20) When the CCVT/CVT supplied at rated voltage and with a substantially

zero burden, has its secondary terminals short-circuited, and the short-
circuit is suddenly removed, ferro-resonance shall not be sustained for
more than 2 seconds.

21) Following a short circuit of the supply at the primary and earth terminals,

the secondary output voltage of the capacitor voltage transformer shall


decay within one cycle of rated frequency, to a value of less than 10% of
the peak value before short-circuit.

22) Secondary winding-1 shall be used for metering as well as for protection
functions. The specified accuracy shall, therefore, be maintained down to

zero burden.

3. CONSTRUCTION
N

3.1 General

The CCVTs/CVTs shall be constructed to provide adequate insulation for the


insulation class specified and to withstand the mechanical and thermal stresses
produced under short-circuit conditions.

The high voltage capacitor elements shall be made of high quality paper and
aluminum foil and shall be properly assembled to minimize changes in
capacitance with time and temperature. They shall be enclosed in an oil-filled
porcelain chamber, hermetically sealed with oil-resistant and weather proof
gaskets. The chamber shall be equipped with a bellows or gas cushion expansion
device. Necessary steps shall be taken to ensure free expansion of oil and gas in
the temperature range specified.

A dust proof and weather proof base housing shall be provided at the base of the
high voltage capacitor stack, containing the intermediate potential transformer,
compensation devices, ferro-resonance suppression devices and protective
devices.

3.2 High Voltage (HV) Capacitors

The CCVTs/CVTs shall be equipped with H.V. porcelain insulators, with an


insulation not less than that of the terminal to which they are connected and of
creepage distance specified above.

Each capacitor shall be equipped with a pressure indicator. Provisions shall be


available in the electromagnetic unit for power testing and for this purpose a test
terminal shall be provided at the base of the transformers. This terminal and the
arrangement for grounding, therefore, shall be similar to the neutral bushing
specified on the CCVT/CVT Oil level gauge shall be of a type which can be read
with the equipment energized.

The insulators shall be manufactured from wet type porcelain and shall be suitable
for continuous outdoor service. The porcelain shall be constructed so as to

produce a uniform electrical stress distribution throughout and shall contain no
voids, be leak proof at all temperature and shall be guaranteed to be within the
specified RIV range.

The HF tap and the extra high rated intermediate voltage tap shall be brought out

from the capacitor into the electromagnetic unit by means of porcelain bushings.

Intermediate voltage tap bushing insulation level shall be as under:

3.3 Neutral Bushings

The primary neutral connection shall be brought out through the welded steel
plate tank wall or cover, with a dry polyurethane type bushing, capable of
withstanding a 4 kV, 50 Hz test for connection to a neutral conductor.

3.4 Primary Line Terminals

The CCVTs/CVTs shall be supplied with corona free 4-bolt clamp type terminal
connectors, plated for connecting aluminium bus as specified in the Specifications
Drawings for 500 kV and 220 kV CCVTs/CVTs respectively including hardware
required to bolt the connectors to CCVTs/CVTs high voltage terminals.

3.5 Secondary Terminals, Terminals and Marshalling Boxes

The secondary leads shall be brought out through the capacitive potential devices
tank wall by means of multiple bushings, equipped with connectors for 2.5 to 10
mm² stranded copper conductor and shall terminate in a low voltage weather
proof box mounted on the side of the tank. Secondary terminals shall be labeled
with engraved stainless steel or escutcheon plate labels, to be approved by the
Engineer Mcbs with alarm contacts shall be provided for each core in the terminal
box for protection against faults in the cable connections between the terminal
box and the marshalling box. Protective characteristics of the mcbs shall be
coordinated with the rating of the CCVTs/CVTs as well as with the down steam
protective devices.

The terminal box and the cabinets containing the PLC accessories and the PLC
tuning units shall be located in such a manner that they will line up when the
CCVTs are banked in line for three phase operation.

The name plate shall be fixed at the outside of the terminal box to be visible with

the box closed. Connection diagram shall be affixed inside the secondary terminal
box so that it can be easily read while working in the box.

A marshalling box shall be erected on centre phase supporting structure
containing isolating type terminals to all secondary circuits, 2 mcbs (high speed
-2
CCVT/CVT protection switches compatible with speed of the distance relays,
with alarm contacts), two mcbs for metering and one mcb with auxiliary contact

for synchronizing circuits.

Proper cable glands shall be provided for cable terminations.

Humidistat and thermostat controlled heaters shall be provided inside each


marshalling box. Lamps with door operated switch shall be provided for internal

illumination. There shall be a single phase power socket inside each marshalling
box. An mcb with auxiliary contact shall be provided for switching ON/OFF the

AC power supply to the heating, illumination and power socket. The mcb shall
also be equipped with sensitive earth fault protection for personnel safety.

The name plate shall contain all information as specified for rating plates and
markings in the latest edition of relevant IEC Publications.

4. TESTS

4.1 General

The CCVTs/CVTs shall be subjected to tests in the presence of the Engineer for
conformity to the requirements of the Specifications. All tests shall be performed
with the actual electromagnetic unit. The tests shall be made in accordance with
the latest issues of relevant IEC Publications.

Six (6) certified copies of the tests made, and of the results thereof, after the tests
are made shall be furnished by the Contractor to the Engineers, for approval.
The results of these tests shall be in such a form so as to provide means of
determining compliance with the applicable Specifications, for the material
tested. If any item is of a new design or if essential parts have been redesigned,

additional test reports to verify this data shall be submitted for approval of the
Engineer.

4.2 Type Tests

The following type tests shall be made on the CCVTs/CVTs:

1. Ferro resonance tests


2. Transient response test
3. Radio interference test
4. Temperature rise test
5. Lightning impulse test
6. Chopped lightning impulse test
7. Switching impulse test
8. Wet test for outdoor type transformers

Certified type tests reports from an independent laboratory on similar units shall
be submitted prior to performing the tests for the Engineer’s approval. In the
event the Engineer considers these reports covering equipment of similar design,
rating and construction from an independent laboratory as acceptable, he may
waive such test.

4.3 Routine Tests

The following routine tests shall be performed:

1. Verification of terminal marking

3. Power frequency withstand test between section
4. Power frequency withstand test on primary windings
5. Partial discharge measurement

5. DRAWING AND DESCRIPTIVE DATA


5.1 Bid Drawings and Data
The Contractor shall furnish the following information:

1) Sketches showing outline dimensions and location of accessories,.
Descript data shall show main construction features of CCVTs/CTs.

4) Type test reports from an independent and internationally recognized


laboratory of exactly similar type of CCVTs/CVTs may be acceptable.

5.2 Approval Drawings and Data

The details of drawings, technical data and instructions to be submitted for

approval shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:

1) Detailed construction drawings


2) Schematic and wiring diagrams
3) Name plates
4) Drawings required for installation, operation and maintenance
