Lighting Controls

• Lighting usage efficiency depends on Lighting controls.

Lighting control emsures:
Reduction in energy consumption
Minimum lighting that is needed to give maximum comfort to occupants.
Tailoring of lighting condition as per occupant choice.
Modern lighting control provides far more possibilities than a simple switch-on and
switch-off function.
Modern lighting control is fully automatic
Three basic types lighting
• Ambient or general lighting
• Ambient or general lighting is a necessary part of any good lighting plan because it provides
an overall glow to a room.
• Accent lighting
• Accent lighting creates a focal point. It builds upon the ambient lighting of a room by adding
dimension, and can be used to draw attention to a feature, like a piece of artwork or a plant,
or to highlight a unique design element, like wall texture or decorative coving.
• Task lighting
• This type of lighting is localized and can be provided by a variety of different sources, allowing
you the option to adjust the lighting for a work space or chosen area and brighten or darken
it in order to suit your needs. Effective task lighting needs to reduce glare and should be
bright enough to prevent eye strain, making it ideal for activities like, reading, cooking, crafts
and hobbies, studying and work.
Two branches of Lighting Controls
• Scene setting
• Specific lighting effect can be selected by the user.
• Energy Saving
• Energy can be saved by dimming the lights as per the need.

LIGHTING COMMUNICATION PROTOCOLS

• Communication protocols in the lighting industry are different from each due to the following:

DIGITAL MULTIPLEX (DMX512)

• This is a digital protocol first developed for stage and theatre lighting. Its main advantage
is the very fast (40 signals / second) response time. Luminaires respond ‘instantly’ to a
command.
• Its main application is for color changing LEDs. Each color LED, red, green or blue, has
its own address, so the luminaire will have three DMX addresses.
• Each address can have 255 steps between 100% output and OFF, so very fine dimming or
color mixing can be achieved.
• Apart from color change, DMX can also be used to pan/ tilt or focus luminaires that have
this facility. Since the system supports 512 addresses, there is a maximum of 170 RGB
luminaires that can be controlled (512/3 = 170).
• However, it is possible to control more luminaires by introducing another DMX universe.
• DMX is a one-way protocol, but there has been a recent enhancement which allows for
two-way communication. This is known as RDM, Remote Device Management [
Unlike incandescent or fluorescent luminaires,
LEDs require the installation of a driver.

This is due to their comparatively complex nature,

that a conversion from AC to DC is required as an
input.
LED drivers
It is then followed by a power regulation required
by the LED to function.

The term driver can be replaced with the term

power supply as well.
Importance of LED Drivers
Constant Voltage vs Constant Current LED
Drivers
• This translates into the fact that this LED driver can produce
a constant voltage of 36VDC, with a maximum rated current of
2.65A and a constant current of 2.65A, with voltage in the
range of 18-36VDC. This means that a light source that requires
a constant voltage of 36VDC, can be connected to this driver
and can receive that voltage, provided that the load current is
below 4 A. A CC driver is more efficient that a CV driver and is
usually more preferred. This is because, generally, a light
source has a current value that is specified in its datasheet, so
the voltage has to be adjusted to ensure that that particular
current value is reached. But a CV driver is more expandable, in
the sense that more chip-on boards (COBs) can be added,
provided that the net current is below the rated current of the
driver.
