The snow is falling down (tune: farmer in the dell)
The snow is falling down, the snow is falling down.
Great big white flakes that do not make a sound.
The Winter Song
(tune: Farmer in the Dell)
Let's sing a winter song,
Let's sing a winter song,
The days are short, the nights are long.
Let's sing a winter song.
The winter wind is cold,
The winter wind is cold,
It freezes noses, ears, and toes.
The winter wind is cold.
Winter now is here,
Winter now is here,
Put on your coat, your hat, your gloves, Winter now is here.
(To the tune of Ring Around the Rosie)
Winter Winter Wonderland
Pockets Full of Mittens
Snowflakes, Snowflakes
We All Fall Down!
You put your right mitten in,
You take your right mitten out.
You put your right mitten in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the winter pokey, [shiver]
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!
Others Include:
You put your left mitten in....
You put your right boot....
You put your left boot....
You put your winter hat in....
You put your snowsuit (whole body) in....
It Is Winter
(sung to "If You're Happy And You Know It")
It is winter
and it's time to ride a sled!
It is winter
and it's time to ride a sled!
It is winter
that's the season!
We don't need
a better reason!
It is winter
and it's time to ride a sled!
Teaching little ones to "zipper" is a trying task especially when winter comes and
you're getting ready to go out to play in the snow. During circle, choose a child's coat.
Show them the two parts of the zipper, the insert (the baby's feet) and the zipper (the
Bed), and practice zippering using this poem. Put the baby's feet in the bottom of the
bed and pull the covers right over his head. This usually takes a few times for them to
catch on but you will find them repeating the poem to you or parents.
Our preschool is a special needs program where most of the children have language
delays. We made up this winter song to help develop language skills.
Put a pile of winter clothing into the center of the circle. (boots, hat, mittens, snow
pants, scarf, etc.
Song: (sung to tune of "Are You Sleeping"
"It is snowing, it is snowing,
On my head, on my head
I need a hat, I need a hat,
On my head, on my head"
As you sing name the body part, let the children pick out the correct article of clothing
to finish the verse. For example, if you say feet...they would pick boots.
We did this at circle time with child sized clothing and as we sang, the teacher "put
on" the clothing. The children found this very funny.
(To the tune of "Clementine")
First the snowpants,
Then the boots,
Then the jacket,
Then the hat,
And the mittens go on last,
So we can go outside to play.
I have visuals hanging up on the wall with numbers, so we can point to what comes
next. It works well with 3 year olds.
Snowflake Song (Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little snowflake, fat and round
Falling softly to the ground.
When enough of me falls hear me shout,
"Here's a snowball, better watch out!" (pretend to throw a snowball)
Come Sing a Song of Winter --
Come sing a song of winter, of winter, of winter,
Come sing a song of winter, the cold days are here.
With snowing and blowing and rosy cheeks are glowing,
Come sing a song of winter the cold days are here
Snow snow falling down
Falling on the ground
Falling here and falling there
And falling everywhere!
Use hand movements to supplement the song
Snowflakes, snowflakes, falling to the ground.
Snowflakes, snowflakes, falling to the ground. I am bundled to my chin.
See my footsteps where I've been. Snowflakes, snowflakes, falling to the ground.

The day is cloudy and the wind is bold. Dress up warmly, you mustn't get cold!
Put on your coat and zip it up tight, put on your left boot, put on your right.
Put on your scarf and put on your hat, put on your mittens and clap-clap-clap!
Go outside and play and play. Come in again, and then we'll say-
Take off your coat that was zipped up tight, take off your left boot, take off your right.
Take off your scarf, take off your hat, take off your mittens, and then take a nap!
(To the tune of Are you Sleeping)
Dance like snowflakes
Dance like snowflakes
In the air
In the air
Whirling, Twirling snowflakes
Whirling, Twirling snowflakes
Here and there
Here and there
Way up high In the winter sky , 2 little snowflakes caught my eye.
Down to the ground they fell without a sound.
And before very long , It was snowing all around.
Hand motions Point to sky hold up 2 fingers or two have children hold up two arms
up point to eye children turn around and around they really will have fun with this
finger play.
Jack Frost
Where did you get that little red nose?
Jack Frost kissed it I suppose.
He kissed it once.
He kissed it twice.
Poor little nose it's as cold as ice!
Snowball
tune - "Are You Sleeping, Brother John
Make a snowball, make a snowball. Throw it now, throw it now. Make a snowball,
make a snowball. Throw it now, throw it now!
Hand imitates making snowballs and throwing the snowballs. I let my children use
crumbled white tissue paper for the snowballs. They love this winter song!
I made myself a snowball
Just as perfect as could be.
I thought I’d keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me
I gave it some pajamas
And a pillow for it’s head.
Then, last night it ran away,
But first –it wet the bed! Gotcha!
Sung to the theme I'm a little teapot.
I'm a little snowman short and fat.
Here's my scarf and here's my hat.
When the snow is falling come and play.
Build a snowman every day.
A chubby little snowman had a carrot for a nose
Along came a bunny and what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny was looking for his lunch...
And he ATE that snowman's nose. .nibble nibble. .CRUNCH
Snow fell last night and it fell so hard, when I looked out my window, it covered up my
yard.
I made 10 little snowballs and I put them in a line. One fell off the wall, and then there
were 9.
9 little snowballs, I put them on the gate. 1 fell off and then there were 8.
8 little snowballs, I hit 1 up towards heaven. It came down splat! and then there were
7.
7 little snowballs, I hit 1 with a stick. It broke in little pieces and then there were 6.
6 little snowballs, all lined up side by side. My dog stole 1 and then there were 5.
5 little snowballs, I took them to the store. 1 fell off my sled, so then there were 4.
4 little snowballs, underneath a tree. I threw 1 at a monster, then there were 3.
3 little snowballs, I'll share them with you. You have 1 and I have 2.
2 little snowballs, left out in the sun. 1 melted away and then there was 1.
1 little snowball left all alone. I'll put it in my pocket and take it home.
One royal penguin, feeling very blue, called for his brother then there were two.
Two royal penguins swimming in the sea, called for their sister, then there were
three. Three royal penguins waddle on the shore, call for their mother, then there
were four. Four royal penguins learning how to dive, call for their father, then there
were five.
Peter, Peter Penguin, marching by, toes turned out and head held high (Stand very
tall with legs together and toes pointing out)
A long black coat (Sketch coat down back)
And a clean white vest (Pretend to hold edges of vest in hands)
Peter, Peter Penguin, you're the best! (Waddle like a penguin)
This snowman song is sung to the song "5 little pumpkins", I just changed some of
the words.
5 little snowmen sitting on the ground, (pat hands on floor)
the first one said; "oh my aren't we round." (make circle with arms)
The second one said; "there are snowflakes in the air." (wiggle fingers above head)
The third one said; "but we don't care." (shrug shoulders)
The fourth one said; "lets run and run and run. (pat hands quickly on the floor)
The fifth one said; "I'm ready for some fun." (smile)
Whew went the wind (blow) and out came the sun (make circle with arms over head)
and the five little snowman knew their fun was done.( pretend your melting)
note: I made 5 sets of snowmen out of tag board and glued on Popsicle sticks. Each
set were wearing the same colored hats and scarves (2 red, 2 blue, 2 green, 2 blue,
2 yellow). I gave 5 kids a snowman to hold during the song and make dance and had
the other 5 on the floor (kids that did not have a snowman to hold did the actions to
the song). At the end of the song the children with the snowmen came up and told
me the color and matched it to the correct one on the floor. Repeat song till everyone
has had a turn holding a snowman.

It Snowed Last Night
Oh, it snowed last night It snowed last night.
The sky bears had a PILLOW FIGHT, tore up all the clouds in sight, tossed down all
the feathers white.
Oh, it snowed last night, it snowed last night.

To foster rhythm, we do this rhyme either with our rhythm sticks or with our hands:
Snow is falling, falling down; Snow is falling hit the ground. (Move hands down,
wiggling fingers like snowflakes)
Flurries, flurries (slow beat, slowly said)
Snowing, snowing (faster)
Blizzard (Loud and very fast)

idea
I made props for the following song by cutting out blue construction paper circles and
gluing a doily the same size on top of the circle to look like a snowflake. I then glue it
onto a fat Popsicle stick and glue a copy of the words on the back.
You can let your children hold and move them as you sing:
I'm a Little Snowflake (tune I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little snowflake, Look at me.
No other snowflake is just like me.
I am so unique, as you can see.
And just as special as I can be!

I stand quite still at 10 below.
With a big long carrot for a nose, (indicate body part)
And worn out shoes to make my toes. I
have two apples for my eyes,
And a woolen coat about this size. (measure)
I have a scarf that's warm and red. (circle arms around neck)
And a funny hat upon my head. (touch hands to head)
The sun is coming out, Oh dear! (make circle overhead w/arms)
The sun is melting me I fear (begin to sink to floor)
Oh my, I was so nice and round,
Now I'm just a puddle on the ground! (curl up on floor)

have children make a snowman small enough to glue to an "popsicle" stick or tongue
depressor. The snowman will be used as a small puppet to sing the snowman hokey
pokey.
Snowman Hokey Pokey (to the tune of the Hokey pokey.
You put your snowman up, you put your snowman down,
you put your snowman up and you shake him all around.
You do the snowman pokey and you turn your self around, two stomps on the
ground.
You put your snowman in front you put your snowman in back, you put your
snowman in front and you give your knee a wack.
You do the snowman pokey and you turn your self around, two stomps on the
ground. You touch your snowman to your head, you touch your snowman to your toe,
you touch your snowman to your head and you shake his to and fro, you do the
snowman pokey and your turn your self around, two stomps on the ground. We use
this in all our different themes. We even use the same sticks we just make different
items, like cars when we so transportation, dinosaurs when we do the Jurassic age,
insects when we do insects.......

Here are a couple of "old-favorites" for winter that I picked up along the way:
"I'm a Little Snowman" (Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little snowman, short and fat.
Here is my broomstick, here is my hat.
When the sun comes up I melt away.
Down, down, down till whoops! I'm a puddle!
"Snow is Falling all Around" Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"
Snow is falling all around,
Falling, falling, to the ground.
I catch snowflakes on my tongue.
Building snowmen is such fun.
Snow is falling all around, Falling, falling, to the ground.
The snowman song
Here is a snowman Big and white (draw large circle in air) Isn't he a lovely sight Let's
make a snowball (pretend to scoop snow from floor) And throw it at his hat (Throw
ball) Off it goes, just like that!
Fingerplay: I had a little snowman
I had a little snowman
He had a carrot nose.
Along came a bunny, And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny, Looking for his lunch,
Ate that snowman's nose. . . NIBBLE, NIBBLE, CRUNCH
This is a fingerplay:
Here is a Hill
Here is a hill (make a hill with your left arm)
All covered with snow
We'll get on our sled And ZOOM!
Down we'll go. (swoop right hand downward)
Five little snowmen On a winter's day
The first one said, "Wake up, so we can play!"
The second one said, "Let's stomp on the ground."
The third one said, "Let's roll around."
The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run."
The fifth one said, "I'm afraid I feel the sun."
"Oh dear," cried the snowmen, As they looked toward the sky.
And the five melting snowmen Waved a fond goodbye.
