Theoretical Principle:
This experiment follows the law of reflection, which states that the angle of incidence (i) is equal to
the angle of reflection (r) when light is reflected from a plane mirror. This principle is verified by
tracing light paths and using pins to simulate light rays reflecting from a mirror.
Scope:
The objective is to investigate the behavior of light when it reflects off a plane mirror by measuring
the angles of incidence and reflection.
Instruments Used:
Pins (P1, P2, P3, P4), Plane mirror, Ruler, Protractor, Ray-tracing sheet
Equipments used:
Procedure:
1. A 10 cm line labeled MR was drawn on the ray-trace sheet.
2. A normal line NL was drawn perpendicular to MR, crossing at point B.
3. A line AB was drawn from B with an angle of incidence i = 70° and length 7 cm. Another line CB
was drawn at an angle θ = 40° with a similar length.
4. Pins P1 and P2 were placed along line AB, and their images were aligned using pins P3 and P4
along the reflected ray.
5. The same procedure was repeated for line CB, where P1 and P2 were placed on this line, and their
reflections were marked with P3 and P4.
6. The angles α and β were measured between the reflected rays and the normal.
Data & calculations:
Conclusions:
The experiment confirmed the law of reflection. The angles measured for α and β aligned with the
expected theoretical values, demonstrating that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.
Minor discrepancies might arise due to alignment errors or slight inaccuracies in pin placement.
