Consensus DM

Consensus Decision Making (CDM) is a collaborative approach where all stakeholders seek mutual agreement on decisions rather than relying on majority votes, fostering group unity and harmony. The process involves framing the problem, discussing diverse opinions, identifying concerns, selecting a direction, and reaching a final decision, while also monitoring outcomes. However, CDM can lead to drawbacks such as groupthink, excessive optimism, and stereotyping of dissenting members.

Consensus Decision Making

A type of decision in which all affected parties (stakeholders) search for ways to reach
agreement on a course of action to address an issue or set of related issues. In consensus
Decision-Making participants take decisions by mutual agreement rather than by majority
vote.

It is generally observed that CDM results in good problem solving approach. Though it
may not be considered the model decision making process by each member, it typically leads
to a high degree of group unity and harmony. CDM is focussed on group discussion where
everyone's opinions are sought and understood and the resulting solution respects every

2. Group Discussion-Opinions and views of all members are asked for to invite a whole gamut
of information on the topic.

3. Identify underling concerns-Aim is to recognise the root cause of the problem and the
resultant impact.

the different views.

4. Proposals- Discussions result in a set of proposals directed at reaching a decision.

6. Preferred solution- Group goal is to emphasise and identify the most important solution for
the existing problem.

made.
CDM drawbacks

1. May result in groupthink - yearning to reach a consensus may cause people to ignore
indications that the proposed decision is a bad idea.
2. Group may become exceedingly optimistic and engage in risk-taking.
3. It may result in stereotyping of the in-group to ignore out-group members who may
oppose or challenge the group's ideas.
