July has been so busy that there are two headliner events for the cover page. I had the privilege of taking part in both events and I could not decide which to put on the cover. So I highlight both events here. I want to thank the outstanding cadets that make our squadron one of the best in the Wing; the parents whose dedication is unbridled; and our Commander and senior staff who make it all happen. 1st Lt James Kalemis

I NFORMATION Deadline for all submissions is the 25th of the preceding month. Email submissions to jkalemis@comcast.net or deliver a hardcopy. All photographs are by 1Lt. James Kalemis unless otherwise noted.

National Cadet Competition

The Illinois Wing Drill Team won 3rd place in the National Cadet Competition in Washington DC. The teams from the eight regions competed in Standard Drill, Innovative Drill, Inspection, Written Exam, Mile Run, Volleyball, and Panel Quiz. The Illinois team won either 2nd or 3rd place in all the events. The Drill Team is composed of cadets from all over the Wing. Our squadron had three cadets on the team, C/1st Lt Steven DeCraene, C/2nd Lt Krystal Freund, and C/TSgt Tammy Pals.

By Major Rhonda Anderson Mayor Dr. Brain Sager was a welcome guest for our promotion and awards meeting this past month. He took the time to great each cadet and senior member and awarded C/2nd Lt Medinas Mitchell. C/Capt Mangano and C/CMSgt J Hendler were also privileged to receive awards from the Mayor. C/Mangano received the AF Award for Outstanding Officer of the year for 2005. C/Hendler received the AF Sgt Assoc Award for the best NCO 2005. These cadets were notified of their awards at the December awards banquet, and receive these medals/ ribbons/certificates as a follow up. The ribbons may be worn on the CAP uniform. Mayor Sager is also an instructor of Animal Science at McHenry County College and very well traveled around the world. He is an advocate of youth programs; he established 4-H programs in Costa Rica. It was an honor to host the mayor and to have him present some of our most prestigious awards. Keep up the great work cadets. We might have the Mayor return for your hard earned award.

By Major Ken Anderson Actually, it is all a matter of perspective and interpretation. Understandably, not having had former military experience and contact with America's finest fighting force, you misinterpreted what you saw. The Marine in question is in the fully prone recon sniper position, covering the rear, locked and loaded on the enemy trying to sneak up behind the others. Being constantly on the alert, this fine Marine was aware of the enemy movement and dropped into fighting position before the others had even become aware there was eminent danger. While they are busy waving their flags and smiling for the cameras, the Marine is busy saving their rears. Once again, I am proud of my Marine brothers in arms. Semper Fi.

By 1st Lt James Kalemis These servicemen lawn ornaments were spotted during the Dick Tracy Parade in Woodstock. Note how gallant and vigilant they stand. The fine Army serviceman, the Sailor, and the Airman. But please note that the Marine is sleeping in the weeds

By Major Ken Anderson, with tongue firmly in cheek. Kokomo, IN It was with extreme sorrow that Maj. Ken Anderson and Lt. James Kalemis recently came to the conclusion of their exciting week-long tour of duty with approximately 30 other attendees at the Great Lakes Regional Staff College held at Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana. Major Anderson, proving that [former] Marines do, in fact, have very little sense, attended the college as both instructor and student. Lt. Kalemis, taking the typically easiest route as would be expected of him, merely attended as a lowly student. Regional Staff College is offered as a series of titillating training seminars for field grade officers in preparation for possible Wing, Regional, and Natonal level command responsibilities. During RSC, attendees sit in rapt attention through hours of stimulating training courses on a number of high-level military topics appropriate to high-level command. Topics include Human Resources, Finance, Legal, Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, Leadership, Communication, and AF Liaison Organization, to name a few. Clearly the highlight of the seminar series presented during the week were Total Quality Management and Basic Emergency Services, taught by Majors Ken and Rhonda Anderson of MCCS, respectively. Additional assignments extended class time each day into early evening as a series of breakout working sessions dealing with problem solving, planning, articles, speech preparation, and the infamous telling of war stories. Extra time spent on homework assigned each evening provided attendees with the sleep deprivation experience necessary to set up the challenge of learning and decision-making while unconscious. The highlight extracurricular activity of the college was member and staff attendance at an indoor circus in Peru, IN. Before the end of the evening, Major Anderson and Lt. Kalemis were envisioning themselves as part of the seven-person high wire pyramid act. Rumor has it that they may return next year and try to weasel in on the act. Majors Anderson and Lt. Kalemis established friendships, contacts of interest, and brought home several interesting thoughts as a result of having attended the college. Be on your toes at MCCS because theyve come back with brains stocked full of knowledge that they are anxious to share with you as soon as they wake up.

For our Aerospace Education classes the past few months we have been working on building a cardstock model of the Saturn V rocket. The Saturn V rocket was used for the Apollo and Skylab programs. NASA launched 13 Saturn V rockets between 1967 and 1973, with no loss of payload. While building the rocket we learned about the different stages of the rocket and how it all fit together. Next Aerospace Education project, the Model Rocketry program!

By Major Rhonda Anderson We are to be the host of the group 22 van which has just been delivered to us. It is a 15 pack van that will obviously hold most of us on future trips. We are very fortunate to have been entrusted with this terrific corporate asset. With privilege, comes responsibility. A 15 pack van requires special attention to driving. Most of our senior members have already processed the paperwork and have a Corporate driving permit, others will need to do so. I am requiring one more step...seniors will need to take a short training module and a post quiz. We want to be doubly sure that our most precious assets, our people, are safe at all times. A small formality, for big rewards. Now for the really bad news, well sort of. We have been asked to vacate the armory by 31 August. This is no fault of our own and we are not the only unit faced with finding a new meeting location. Most squadrons in Illinois armories have been asked to find new quarters. The Army Guard is supporting the Iraqi war and most of their soldiers are deployed. We are certainly grateful for what they are doing for our country and this makes our disappointment in loosing our wonderful facilities easier to swallow. They no longer have the personnel to provide security for our use and they need our storage space for their own use. Upon receiving this daunting news, I informed the senior membership, and we have all been pulling together to locate an appropriate facility. We have considered some local churches, schools, and government facilities. All of these locations have their plusses and minuses. The best offer, and the one we will probably utilize, is from One Zero Charlie, Galt Airport. They want us to come, and for a very minimal fee, they are making available to us a 50 x 50 hanger with electric/ heating/restroom. There is no doubt the facility offers a lot...especially since we would own the key. We could enter at will, host SAREX activities, meet the pilots who call Galt their home, etc. We are honored that the Airport Owners, Mr. Michael Stanard and Mr. Ivan Djurin, with Carolyn Hendler, General Manager, are making this opportunity available to us. They are putting a lot of faith in us; we will not let them down! There is a down side. Most furniture belongs to the armory and we will need tables, chairs, TV, VCR/DVD, and a whiteboard, just to name a few necessary items. Keep your eyes and ears open for the final determination. Also, if you, your parents, your parents company, your neighbors, anybody, can assist with any of the furniture needs, let us know! I have already begun writing grants and will mail them when we make a definite decision. We are looking at charging a monthly dues, at the most it would be $5.00 per person up to $10.00 per family. We will try to keep any costs to a bare minimum, even none if we can work it out. The advantage of the dues: they would pay for the facility, they could off-set gas costs rather than pay per trip, and if we dont use the fuel money we could provide ribbons without collecting from you for each promotion . All this and more, yet to be determined. Hey, how about those encampment cadets? Semper Vigilans,
