Laboratory 03 – Synchronous Generator LO3
Characteristics
Objectives
The objective of this experiment is to study open circuit and short circuit characteristics of the
synchronous generator.
Apparatus
• LabVolt setup
• Synchronous Machine
• Dynamometer
• Data Acquisition Unit
• Computer
Task 1: Open Circuit Test
Figure 1: Open Circuit Test
• Connect the synchronous generator module with the prime mover (Dynamometer) and do the
wiring as shown in figure 1. (Connect the generator stator windings in Y configuration.)
• Start the Dynamometer and adjust the speed to 1500 RPM.
• Adjust the Field Current - IF (DC Exciter Supply) until the generator output is equal to the rated
terminal voltage, do this in steps while taking measurement of IF and Line to Neutral (Phase)
voltage (Vph = EA at no load) output from the generator.
• At rated output voltage measure the machine torque and observe both the line and phase
voltage waveforms on the power scope. Sketch the generated voltage waveform at the rated
voltage.
• Reduce the alternator excitation to zero and stop the dynamometer.
• Plot open circuit characteristics (OCC) for the synchronous motor and identify the air gap
line.
Task 2: Short Circuit Test
Figure 2: Short Circuit Test
• Connect the synchronous generator module with the prime mover (Dynamometer) and do the
wiring as shown in figure 1. (Connect the generator stator windings in Y configuration.)
• Start the Dynamometer and adjust the speed to 1500 RPM.
• Please note: The rated output current of the synchronous generator is 0.28 A, if you exceed this
value generator will burn.
• Slowly adjust DC excitation current value in steps until the output current value is about 0.28A.
Take measurements for all the steps increase.
• Reduce the alternator excitation to zero and stop the dynamometer.
• Plot short circuit characteristics (SCC) for the synchronous motor.
Task 3: DC Resistance Test
Figure 3: DC Resistance Test
• To perform the DC resistance test, the motor should be turned off.
• Connect the stator windings in a Y-connected configuration as shown in Figure 3.
• Measure the DC voltage output and set it to 12 V before connecting the DC supply
to the stator windings (port 1 and 2).
• Apply the DC voltage to the stator terminals and measure the current.
• You need to make sure that the current through stator coils should not exceed the rated
current of the generator (0.28 A).
• After taking current and voltage measurements, calculate the winding DC resistance.
