EXPERIENCE

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE Charlotte, NC - B.A. in Biology with Minor in Biotechnology, Senior Year
U NIVERSITY OF MARYLAND UC

Distance Learning, Germany and Afghanistan - Associate of the Arts

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Molecular microbiology laboratory of Todd Steck - Biology Department, UNC Charlotte 2009-Present Initial focus as undergrad assistant consisted of learning proper sterile technique, basic lab maintenance, and bacterial cell line propagation to support a university labs primary research involving bacterial metagenomic changes and Cystic Fibrosis. Scope of responsibility was later changed to include supervised control of a graduate research project aimed at bacterial source tracking in the environment using absolute quantication. Familiarization with modern methods of real time precision gene identication was gained along with versatile abilities in PCR, qPCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, DNA isolation and purication, cell culture, cell line maintenance, experimental design and troubleshooting.
PUBLIC HEALTH TECHNICIAN

US Army, - Europe, Afghanistan, Continental US 2004-2008 Initial training both as Infantry (Fort Benning) and Public Health (Fort Sam Houston). Heavily specialized assignment in Department of Defense responsible for disease prevention and containment through facility inspection, public speaking on critical health concerns, environmental site surveys, and eld water/soil/air quality assessment. Received additional training as lowest ranking technician of medical detachment in Germany, later promoted to detachment leader following deployment to the Middle East. Performed full range of public health duties as part of a highly mobile advanced party of the detachment, responding to theatre-wide requests for assistance with food borne illness outbreaks, endemic malarial and leishmaniasis transmission, routine preventive assessments, and voluntary human resources missions related to the winning of hearts and minds.
SKILL SETS Laboratoy Research - Two years experience in a molecular genetics laboratory, benetting from close

mentorship as tasks progressed from basic laboratory fundamentals to designing/troubleshooting graduate research using current methods in bacterial genetics and molecular biology.
Biotech Focus - Exposure to emerging applications of genetic sequencing and bioinformatic analysis while

voluntarily assisting a partner lab in support of currently ongoing research on Cystic Fibrosis. Hands-on included uorospectrometry, 454 and shotgun sequencing, and genomic statistical analysis using custom data modeling.
Field Science - Boots on ground experience in Europe and the Middle East performing public health

assessment and environmental site survey. Individually tasked with rapid on site health risk assessment using rugged equipment for air quality surveillance, biological and chemical water quality analysis, and microscopic identication of arthropod vectors.
Data Reporting - Comfortable with a range of technical writing to express scientic results, from

department of defense memorandums for record to maintenance of standard data entry in lab notebooks. Acute awareness of the need for thorough procedural recording and succinct summary of results using an appropriate format. Todd Steck, Ph.D. Department of Biology, UNC Charlotte.
