AHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH One thing all married couples learn over time is that marriage = communication.

Given your new marriage, it would be safe to assume that communication is not free flowing yet. Now would be a good time to start (provided your husband does not have any anger/violence issues). A sincere, honest and polite sit down talk is vital for this marriage to succeed. Otherwise, there may be things that are not being communicated on both sides that are leading to tension. This INCLUDES the bedroom - it may be time to communicate to each what is happening and your utter disdain for such acts - not everyone is into everything and he needs to know that. Talk it out and guage the response. You are NOT to blame - stop thinking of this as a blame problem - it is a communication problem. Politeness and some discretion in terms of behavior is required for open communication. If he does things that irritate you, you should tell him, but find the appropriate setting to do so (i.e. NOT in front of friends/family and NOT in a demeaning/rude manner). If it is at home, just tell him politely (but without hesitation...be firm but polite) that you have an issue with whatever he does. Now, take this with some flexibility - two people will NEVER have everything in common and the same dislikes/likes. So if the things that annoy you are little, weigh out whether it really needs to be made an issue vs. the benefits of bringing it up. Clinginess - well, he IS married to you . Seriously though, everyone has a different level of comfort with this. So what is clingy to you may be something else to someone. Telling your spouse that he is too clingy is not going to get a real good response (again...you are married...you are going to be kinda clinged together...hence that palla that you held during the Anand Karaj). Some of the clinglness may wear off in time, but you can try to channel it. Do stuff together as Gursikhs. Go to the Gurudwara and Sangat, Nagar keertans, etc. If he is shy (and you are not), try to find other married Gursikh couples to associate with so that he can slowly let go of you and start to build his his own friends. Try to find things you both like doing together or start to do some sort of seva together. It will foster some positivity and allow for growth. Being surrounded by people you don't like sounds like you moved in with the in-laws. That is a tough situation. How does your spouse feel about moving out? Is it am option? A lot of feelings get hurt with this separation (usually of the parents), but it may be for the best, as this may also be fueling some of your distress. Your husband could be completely different person if you both were alone. Marriage is HARD WORK - marriage with kids is even harder. So keep two things in mind. You have to (are supposed to) stay with this person for the rest of your life - might as well start to talk to him. A husban and wife who communicate and get along are nearly invinsible. They are the basic unit of Sangat for a Sikh, as Bhai Gurdas Sahib has stated that one Sikh is a Sikh, but two are Sangat. Divorce is serious stuff...forget legally, but spiritually. You did make a promise in front of Guru Sahib to get married (Anand Karaj) so keep that in mind. If communication can be started, you both may come to acceptable terms with each other and who knows, be happy together. Now, if he just does not listen, has a temper or angers or even (God Forbid any of this) is violent, you may need to seek some respected elder's advice or even

the Punj Pyare if you are Amritdhari (after all, where else can a child go but to a parent's lap when nothing else works?). But the communication needs to start now if there is to be any hope for your marriage or any happiness in general. Do it now, before a child enters the equation and complicates the formula! Because if you both do not support each other now, that child will make you both crazy!!!! My best attempt to providing advice. It may work or it may not work. Most important step - do Ardaas from the bottom of your heart - say to Guru Sahib that Guru Ji, you destined us together, now please make us worthy of embodying the ideal of Gurbani: ma 3 || dhhan pir eaehi n aakheean behan eikat(h)ae hoe || eaek joth dhue moorathee dhhan pir keheeai soe ||3||

Third Mehla: They are not said to be husband and wife, who merely sit together. They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies. ||3||

it's rare to see ant old school arranged marriages these days...so I take it by arranged you man modern arranged...your families introduced you to each other..photos swapped ...and you met and talked etc..before being given the choice of saying yes or no... Basically simple question...if you werent attracted to him, or didint seem to be getting along with him... why did you agree to get married to him ? Ok..too late for that now...your already married...the not getting along thing can be sorted out..it's going to take time and a lot of communication and hard work from both sides 6 months is not a long time in marriage terms it's early days. Despite what people say...an "instant click" just doesnt happen, it's all about communication sacrifice, compromise...and hard work...unfortunately always more so for girls because your moving into a new family and have to adjust to a new environment. What makes you say people around you at home dont like you ? Again...your in a new family...relationships arent going to be made overnight you have to work at them takes time and communication...and overall adjustment... Where you have a a major problem is..that your not attracted to your husband...this cant be fixed...theres no miracle cure,...there is either chemistry or there isnt, you should have really known this...when you first intially and just not agreed to get married if it wasnt going to work for you... Get some professional help, counselling ec..if theres no-one you ca directly talk to in terms of family or friends..

Attractive is a major problem, aren't some pepole really superficial. What I am going to tell you now requires no miracles and no rabbits being pulled out of hats. Beauty or in this case being handsome is the biggest miracle in this world because in about say 10 years that exterior shell is going to start looking like old cloths, which you probably had in the 90s. Even though those clothes are old, you would have built somewhat of a bond with them, when you think back where you wore them and what took place. Those memories will make you see the real beauty in those clothes. The good times and bad times in those cloths will help you grow to love them even more, even though the cloth are old and out of fashion. To speed up the process to realize the real beauty, I say you start doing Sr Sukhmani Sahb everyday. On this issue(attractiveness), it's all in your head. You need to start thinking like a Gursikh and if I can say, less superficial. And the other issues talk to him and tell him your not comfortable. Get him to start doing Sri Sukhmani Sahib the Paath aswell and if he doesn't then go to the Gurdwara and do seva together their. You need to change his thinking, which isn't easy, but Gurbani can do it in a split second. Find a way to help him mix with Chardikala Singhs. His ways will change and he will start thinking in terms of Gurmat.

Dear Panji Please dont think Oral XXX is bad, nothing intimate between a married couple is "bad". On the attraction side, I am confused on how and why you agreed to marry someone only six months ago and now find him un attractive. Is this a geniune post? If so please give me some more details.

The past 3-4 months I have been spending more time and energy on my daily sadhana (spiritual discipline). It has been an up and down cycle for many years as I struggle to stay consistent. The normal day to day work and happenings tend to try to squeeze their way into my time and force my spiritual practice out. Some days I might feel lazy, tiredor just want to do something elseand before you know it Im out of time or am really tired. When it comes down to it, it really has to do with what is most important and priority in your life. You make the important things happen and have a choice. Like most of you I am on this path as a Sikh and have to work at it. Having discipline in ones own life takes commitment and is not always easy.

When I was 5 years old in Amritsar I took Amrit. Looking back at all the things I have gone through since then I realize that it was too early for me, since I did not really understand the commitments. In my teen years I went through some major challenges trying to fit in with western society and "finding myself" as a Sikh. These experiences are what I always try to share with other youth that may be going through similar things. So, even though I have lived as a Sikh and followed the Rehat most of my life, I never really consistently did ALL my banis and wore a Kirpan/Kanga as an Amritdhari. I guess I never really remembered taking Amrit so it was as if I hadnt made that commitment. However, I have always had some sort of spiritual practice in my life since it is the thing which keeps me "tuned in" and happy in life. This past year, writing on my blog and sharing things with you all, has made me go much deeper into myself and feel the call of my soul (As well as being a parent and trying to set an example for my son). Even though many of you might learn from the things that I post on the blog, SO AM I! Many people think of me and SikhNet and assume I am an expert in Sikhi and must be "perfect". I dont claim to be an expert or perfect person and am on this journey of life as you all are. We all have things to share and learn from each other and should support each other along the path, rather than judging or criticizing what you think they should or should not do. God has given each of us gifts to share and it is up to us to see those things and share them. I try to be real and not have some false outside persona. You can look like something on the outside and put on a showbut if it doesnt match the inside than its no use and wont carry you. People will eventually see beyond this "mask". Here is one quote which sums up my experience about learning and teaching: "If you want to learn something, read about it. If you want to understand something, write about it. If you want to master something, teach it," Yogi Bhajan So..If I have learnt anything from this past year it is that you dont have to be an expert and may not even realize the gifts that you have to share with others. We shouldnt limit ourselves or be afraid to share something because you are not "X,Y,Z". In the past I used to just do Japji Sahib and Kirtan Sohila, and even then I was not always regular. I remember seeing friends of mine who were really dedicated and did their banis every day and lots of seva. I dont think I fully related and had this experience like they did. Or at least I never enjoyed it enough to make it a priority to do EVERY DAY.

The past 6 months or so I have been really feeling the need for a regular practice and have worked at it. I am building slowly and steadily which is good for me and is working! Recently I have felt some major changes and have really gotten into doing banis and doing more seva and meditation. I started with my normal Japji and Kirtan Sohilaand as soon as I added Jaap Sahib it was like a lighting bolt hit me. I have always been intimidated with Jaap Sahib because I didnt know the bani well and the few times that I did it I found it hard to read with all the difficult words. Now, after doing the bani I am just powered up and energized. Its an amazing experience every morning! Then I just want to keep doing more banis. I am really starting to feel the power of bani. If you havent already seen the videos, there are some great ones with Guruka Singh talking about banis in the Video Archive. When I wake up in the morning I start with a yoga set which helps get my body going and gives me the daily "tune up" I need. This has kept me healthy in spite of working 14-15 hours every day. I normally get sick in the winter and even though my family got really sick (and many people around me too)I have felt really good. I then sit for about 20 minutes and do a few meditations and then start doing banis. Another thing; I used to always wonder what the 5 banis were since I kept reading different version of the "5 banis", and then I realized that it is not really just 5 banisbut more like 8! (Correct me if I still havent gotten it right Japji Sahib, Tav Prasad Swayia, Jaap Sahib, Shabad Hazare, Benti Chaupee, Rehiras, Anand Sahib, Kirtan Sohila). SoI have a ways to go :) This post is getting really long so I wont go onbut I really just wanted to start to share my experiences and what I am going through now. I hope that you will take a chance and push yourself to do more to experience the Gurus bani. I just want to encourage those of you to not feel pressured to make a huge leap that you cannot sustain and take on too much. The method which has worked for me is building slowly and steadily. Sostart with one baniand when you are readybuild on this to do more. Or if you REALLY cant do one banithen start with a certain number of pauris from a bani and continue reading till you finish and then start over. I think the experience of the bani is more important and crucial, rather than just speed reading as fast as you can through. You may notice your mind wandering off onto this or that thing and not even be aware of yourself reading the bani. It is good to try to get into the meaning of the bani too (which I am starting to learn more of now). You might try a few times a week doing a bani

really slowly, reading the Gurmukhi line first and then the translation after. Bottom line is you want to have an experience of the bani. So, find what works for you and gives you that connection to the Gurus who wrote these most divine words. These words teach us about life and beyond and can be a guiding light you. Bhai Sudh Singh's first meeting with Bhai Vir Singh jee Bhai Sudh Singh had gone to China to collect funds for a Sikh orphanage and while staying there he read Bhai Vir Singh jees famous book Rana Surat Singh and developed extreme Bairaag. He used to cry in Bairaag while reading it and anyone else who read Rana Surat Singh too would cry while reading it. When it was first published, Bhai Vir Singh did not allow his name to be written as author and for this reason most people did not know who the author of this book was. Bhai Sudh Singh came to Siri Amritsar Sahib and met his friend Bhai Sohan Singh Rahi who was also a companion of Bhai Vir Singh. He mentioned to Rahi jee about Rana Surat Singh and asked him if he knew who the author was. Rahi jee knew the author but since Bhai Sahib had strictly stopped his companions from disclosing his name, Rahi jee kept quiet. Bhai Sudh Singh asked three times but Rahi jee kept quiet. When Bhai Sudh Singh got a bit upset, Rahi jee said that he cant disclose the authors name but he can take him to the author. Incidently, Bhai Vir Singh came to the place where they both were standing and from the respect that Rahi jee accorded to Bhai Vir Singh, Bhai Sudh Singh figured out that this person was the author of Rana Surat Singh. After spending some time with Rahi jee discussing some important issues, Bhai Vir Singh directly addressed Bhai Sudh Singh, So did you save China or drown it? Who am I to drown or save China. I went to there to collect funds and thats what I did, Bhai Sudh Singh responded humbly. Bhai Vir Singh noticed that Bhai Sudh Singh was suffering from flu and asked him that he looked sick. Bhai Sudh Singh responded by confirming his sickness. At this Bhai Vir Singh said, Shahpuriye (residents of Shahpur) are not supposed to get sick. Bhai Sudh Singh responded, Sukh and Dukh come as part of this body. How can Shahpuriye escape them? Bhai Sahib jee said, 90 out of 100 residents of Shahpur do paath of Siri Sukhmani Sahib and how can the diseases come to ones who recite Siri Sukhmani Sahib? Bhai Sudh Singh replied, Siri Sukhmani Sahib cuts only mental and spiritual diseases. What relationship can it have with cutting diseases of the body? The diseases of the body occur as a result of our Karma. Bhai Sahib lovingly asked, So you dont do paath of Siri Sukhmani Sahib? Go read the first Ashtpadi of Siri Sukhmani Sahib. Bhai Sudh Singh obeying Bhai Sahibs hukam started doing Siri Sukhmani Sahib. He had just read the first two Pankitis of the first Ashtpadi

- that Bhai Sahib stopped him. Bhai Sahib said, The Pankiti says not

and

which means that Siri Sukhmani Sahib takes care of diseases of the body as well."

Bhai Sudh Singh realized that even though he did do Paath of Siri Sukhmani Sahib but in actuality he did not do Paath of it because he did not absorb the teachings of this great Baani. Bhai Vir Singh jee continued showering spiritual teachings of Gurmat for another half an hour or so. Bhai Sudh Singh realized the greatness of Siri Sukhmani Sahib and thus concluded his first meeting with Bhai Vir Singh jee. From this Saakhi we learn that indeed Siri Sukhmani Sahib is the cure of all diseases and that while doing Paath we should also try to understand the message of Gurbani by trying to understand what it says. Guru Sahib kirpa karan and may we become Paathis of Siri Sukhmani Sahib in actuality. Daas, Kulbir Singh -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Someone asked about Rana Surat Singh. Here is brief information about it:

RANA SURAT SINGH, an epiclike poem by Bhai Vir Singh published in 1905. This poem of more than fourteen thousand lines is written in blank verse, tried for the first time in Punjabi. With all its protracted search and pang, it is ultimately a poem of complete spiritual certitude, of utter harmony and undifferentiation, of turiydpad, the final stage of realization. But despite this religious leitmotif, the work does not degenerate into a dry and didactic poem, but possesses intrinsic worth as a literary production of high aesthetic value. The backdrop of the story is the eighteenth century when the Sikh people were facing oppression and persecution. The plot turns on Ram Raj Kaur`s heartache and its resolution. The Rani was the daughter of a hill monarch ruling in one of the Himalayan principalities who had embraced Sikhism under the influence of Sadhu Singh, a Sikh of saintly character, who had been driven to the hills by state persecution. The ruler had no male heir and married his daughter to Sadhu Singh`s son, Surat Singh. Upon his death, Surat Singh succeeded to the throne. But, although he was now the chief of a small territory, he never failed to answer the call of his compatriot Sikhs whenever they needed his help in battle. In one such battle Rana Surat Singh got killed. This shattered the world of Raj Kaur whose love for her husband was tender beyond words. Nothing could assuage the pain other heart. Duties of state which now fell to her engaged not her attention. She had the ashes of the burnt body of her husband brought to her and entombed them in a shrine of white marble on stream bank on the summit of a small hill. Her mother dissuaded her, but she did not listen to anyone. She had sculptors sent for from Agra and had a life size white statue of the Rana made. She placed it in a temple especially erected for the purpose. Thus did she occupy herself in her love irrepressible.

Never for a moment was she abstracted from her sorrow. Lovelorn Ness was thus Rani Raj Kaur`s fate. Her life was one long drawn sigh. She wept tears of blood for her husband. She offered flowers before the sculptured image and she worshipped the enshrined ashes. But nothing seemed to assuage the pain of separation. And, then, one day as she lay inert with grief, "She felt she had stolen out of the body where it lay and started soaring upwards like a kite in the skies... Like a bird flying in the skies she saw clear eyed all things be low the mansion, the women`s apartments, the whole palace indeed; the forest, the pastures and the trees; the streamlet and the shrine; gardens, and orchards, servants and retainers, maids and her mother herself... the body lay unconscious, and wide awake she.... As she soared further heavenwards, there sprang into sight spirits in myriads floating in the region refulgent. Who could describe their beauty? The beauty of the world below was as if soot, compared to theirs. Blithesome they all were like the lotus in bloom." One of those blithe happy spirits advanced towards Raj Kaur from behind to lead her to regions beyond. Upwards they went into subtler and more luminous spheres. They came to a plane where "the ground shone like crystal. "This was Gian Khand, the Realm of Knowledge. The residents here "were without desire and of pure frame. Sustained by knowledge they dwelt in continued felicity." Then they came to Saram Khand, the Realm of Aesthetic Beauty. Here speech subtler than thought took form most beauteous; and here consciousness and intellect, understanding and reason were reformed and refashioned. Further on was the Realm of Grace, Karam Khand, peopled by those of dedicated soul and power. "Beyond words and beyond limit was the splendour that here prevailed. Here death had no access... Grace abounding rained here without cease." They could go no further. The ultimate domain Sach Khand, the Realm Eternal, was beyond the reach of Rani Raj Kaur`s heavenly companion. So she pointed it out to her from a distance. As she turned her gaze in that direction, she beheld a vast shore-less ocean of light. It flashed with the brilliance of millions of lightnings. In this light so unlike the daily light of the world, the queen could see nothing. But she rejoiced to have a sight of the "exalted city" in which dwelt the Loved One. In gratefulness, a prayer arose from her heart. The prayer was heard and a glimpse was vouchsafed to her other husband seated in front of the Throne of the Timeless. She was enchanted. The duality ended. "I and mine were annulled." The pain of separation was erased. This was a fleeting vision and it vanished with the alacrity of lightning. The queen was left in a daze. Or, was she intoxicated? As she recovered, she felt overwhelmed with gratitude. Her "friend comforting" came forth to escort her back. In descent, the experience was reversed. She was becoming heavier and less radiant as she bore downwards. On the way, her heavenly guide instructed her in the secret of attaining Sach Khand while still in the world as indeed her husband had done. The suspension of ego and selfless, but active, living in the love of mankind and of the Creator transported one into that state. Then the celestial being disappeared "like a drop of milk in a pool." When Ram Raj Kaur opened her eyes, she saw that it was the same spot the same body in which she had lapsed into unconsciousness in the acuteness of her torment. She stood up and felt light like a rosepetal.

What had happened was sculptured vividly in her memory. Yet her pain was far from abated. For her "the time cycle without her husband flowed but emptily." Disconsolate in her consuming love, she remained withdrawn from all worldly business. The queen mother tried cure by charms and exorcism and, not entirely novel in courtly code, by stratagem. A letter was brought to Raj Kaur said to have been written by Rana Surat Singh in his own blood just before he died. He described the fury of the raging battle and his own hopeless condition owing to a serious wound he had received. He advised her that after his death she marry the neighbouring chieftain who had done him a good turn in that desperate state. It was not difficult for Ram Raj Kaur to see that such could never have been her husband`s suggestion. The long suffering search finally ended when an old man found her lying exhaust ed and senseless in front of a remote mountaincave and took her to a satsang, the Sikh word for holy company engaged in prayer and devotion. She was told that by her immaculate love she had become worthy of satsang. The old man who was the leader of that sacred fellowship, started by Rana Surat Singh himself, instructed her in the way of truth. "To recognize one`s duty in the world, to stay firm in it like the mountain, to overcome one`s ego and give oneself to deeds of service and love like the cloud expending itself in rain, to accept the Divine Will as the principle of all things, to harmonize consciousness with Word and to remain ever in union with the Creator through Nam was to attain Sach Khand while still alive a consummation which was the happy lot of Rana Surat Singh in this world. " Raj Kaur was a changed being. She took the reins of government into her hands and yet daily shared in the satsang. Rejoicing in God`s Will, attached to Nam and diligent in her daily duty, she was united to her lord as never before. She had reached the state of grace and equipoise. A superficial reading of the poem might bring out the yearning and emotional agony of a wife born of physical separation from her late husband, but, allegorically, it is the story of the eternal longing of the human soul for merger with its original essence, of the matter bound human consciousness to reach out to its divine source. There could perhaps also be discerned in it an autobiographical motif tracing the poet`s own spiritual strivings, progress and fulfilment. Aesthetically, the poem presents an ardent and artistically wrought vision of a world beyond the categories of time and spacea glowing, but substantive, recollection of one who has gazed upon the innermost mystery of the phenomenon. It is definitely tempered to a moral end and has its religious and theological meanings. References : 1. Harbans Singh, Bhai Vir Singh. Delhi, 1972 2.
