1 General

1.1 Identification of the instrument

1.2 Purpose of the documentation


The documentation provided is intended to enable you to operate the instrument
 safely. Note, in particular, the notes about the possible risks.
 to use it for all permitted applications.
 to be able to routinely service the instrument.

1.3 Care of the documentation


Keep this manual carefully in a place that is meaningful and easily accessible to the
personnel that use the instrument.
Keep this manual until the instrument is brought out of service. Pass it on to the next
owner. This document is an important part of the instrument.
If the manual is lost or destroyed or is in poor condition, request a replacement copy
from the manufacturer, specifying the document number and the issue / revision.
Keep the manual up to date. If you update your device, request a new copy of the
manual specifying the software version of the device.

1.4 Liability
GRABNER INSTRUMENTS accepts no liability if:
 The instrument is used for tasks other than the intended tasks
 Damage is caused by incorrect operation
 Damage is caused by inadequate or incorrect maintenance
 Original spare parts approved by GRABNER INSTRUMENTS are not used
 Unauthorized or improper modifications and maintenance operations are
carried out (without prior discussion with GRABNER INSTRUMENTS)
 Damage is caused because documents are not kept up to date

NOTICE
ALWAYS INFORM anyone who operates the instrument.
Make sure that this section has been carefully read and understood by anyone who
operates the instrument.

Your safety as the operator or maintenance technician is of paramount importance.


Events, problems and faults on the instrument can present a safety risk if you are
unaware of the precautions to be taken to avoid such eventualities and safeguard the
instrument against them.

This section
 defines the appropriate use of the instrument.
 contains generally applicable and observable safety instructions and
regulations.
 explains the meaning of the symbols and pictograms which are used in this
manual and on the signs on the instrument itself.
 provides information on the required protective equipment and the
requirements relating to operating and maintenance personnel.
 provides information on the dangers and residual risks which can occur even
when the instrument is used properly.
Special handling and situational safety instructions are provided in the following
sections of this instruction manual, as and when these are applicable.

Latest technology
The instrument conforms to the latest technology available at the time it was
supplied and was constructed in accordance with recognized safety regulations.
The standards adhered to in the construction of the instrument are listed in the
declaration of conformity.
Nevertheless, the instrument can represent a source of danger if the safety
instructions in this document are not followed and implemented.

2.2 Appropriate use


To operate safely, the instrument must only be used for its appropriate use.
The instrument is a portable fuel analyzer for Gasoline, Diesel Jet Fuels and Biofuel
Blends. Any other use is not permitted.
Appropriate use also includes:
 Observing all safety instructions and notes in this operating manual.
 Ensuring that the inspection and maintenance work is done by qualified and
authorized personnel.
 Ensuring that only original parts are used.
 The use of operating fluids and auxiliaries that are approved by the
manufacturer.

NOTICE
The instrument is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced
physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless
they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the instrument by a
person responsible for their safety.

Ambient conditions
Air temperature in operation: 5°C to +40°C (+41°F to +113°F)
Relative humidity in operation: 0 to 90%, non-condensing

Always run the instrument under the ambient conditions and temperatures listed
above. The instrument may be damaged if it is operated in conditions other than
those as described, which will create unpredictable risks.

NOTICE
Only use the instrument appropriately and in a perfectly safe condition.
This is the only way to guarantee the operational safety of the instrument.

2.3 Reasonably predictable incorrect use


Any use other than that described under "Appropriate use" or that goes beyond such
use is not permitted.
For damage arising from inappropriate use:
 the owner shall bear sole responsibility.
 the manufacturer shall accept no liability whatsoever.
Any inappropriate use of the instrument
 may represent a risk of death or injury to the operator or third parties.
 may cause damage to the instrument itself and other property.
 will render claims under the warranty null and void

WARNING
Risks can occur due to inappropriate use. Inappropriate use includes:
Operation in explosive atmospheres
Exceeding the technical values defined for normal operation
Any working method that jeopardizes operational safety
Commissioning by personnel not authorized by the owner

Modifications or changes
Modifications or additions to the instrument are strictly prohibited and shall render
any liability and warranty of the manufacturer null and void.

Spare and wearing parts, operating fluids and auxiliaries


The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage arising from the use of spare and
wearing parts, operating fluids or auxiliaries not approved by the manufacturer.

2.4 Safety and protective devices

NOTICE
Only operate the instrument with all safety devices fitted and in full working order.
Do not remove or bypass any safety devices.
Defective safety devices must only be replaced by identical components.
Check that the safety devices are in full working order at least once a week.

2.4.1 Symbols on the instrument


The rating plate that identifies the instrument can be found at MINISCAN IR Vision.

Identifies conformity with applicable EU directives that concern
the product and that require a CE marking.
Dispose of the instrument in an environmentally friendly
manner. The instrument must not be disposed of with
household waste. Dispose of the instrument at a public
collection point.

2.5 Areas of responsibility


2.5.1 Areas of responsibility on the part of the operator
The operator undertakes to allow to work with the instrument only those people
who:
 are familiar with the basic health and safety and accident prevention
regulations.
 are both physically and mentally suited to the job.
 are not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.
 have the necessary skills and qualifications.
 have been instructed in how to work with the instrument.
 have read and understood this operating manual.
The requirements of the EC Directive 2007/30/EG on the use of working equipment
are to be observed.
The operator, or a person appointed by him, carries out the following tasks:
 Instructs the operator
 Clearly defines the areas of competence and responsibility of the personnel
operating and maintaining the instrument
 Provides the operating and maintenance personnel with the necessary
personal protective equipment
 Checks the safety awareness of the personnel at regular intervals
 Is responsible for ensuring that the instrument remains perfectly safe to use
 Checks that the required and prescribed inspections and recurring tests are
carried out correctly
 Ensures that the instrument is serviced at the prescribed intervals

2.5.2 Areas of responsibility on the part of personnel


All persons who work with the instrument undertake, before they start work:
 To observe the basic health and safety and accident prevention regulations
 To read and observe the safety section and safety instructions in this
operating manual
 To equip themselves with the necessary personal protective equipment and
to wear it during operation
 To check the instrument for obvious defects before starting it up
 To always operate the instrument appropriately and safely
 To always operate the instrument in normal mode with the defined technical
values
 To report any changes to the instrument which are likely to affect safety to
their line manager or to the owner
 To immediately stop operating the instrument if it is no longer possible to
operate it safely

2.5.3 Personal protective equipment


The operator must wear the following personal protective equipment:
 Lab coat
 Safety goggles
 Safety gloves (no Latex!)

NOTICE
You are personally responsible for:
Wearing the proper personal protective equipment
Regular care and cleaning of the equipment
Timely replacement of damaged and unusable parts of the protective equipment

2.6 Safety instructions


Knowledge of the basic safety instructions and work safety regulations is required in
order to operate the instrument safely and without faults.

2.6.1 Setting up
 Place the instrument on a stable, flat and even surface. If necessary, place an
underlay under the instrument in order to protect the surface beneath.
 Ensure that the instrument is stable: it must be placed so that it does not
wobble or tilt.
 Install the instrument where it has proper ventilation.
 Do not operate this instrument in wet or damp conditions.
 To avoid injury or fire hazard, do not operate this instrument in an explosive
atmosphere.
 Do not operate the instrument near gas appliances.
 Keep the instrument and the power cord away from heat sources.
 Do not sit or stand on the instrument.

2.6.2 Mains connection


 Only connect the instrument to sockets with the same AC voltage as indicated
on the rating plate (100-240 VAC).
 Only use the instrument with the power cord supplied.
 Only use the power cord certified for the country of use.
 This instrument is grounded through the grounding conductor of the power
cord. To avoid electric shock, the grounding conductor must be connected to
earth ground.
 In order to be able to disconnect the instrument from the power supply at any
time, the socket to which the instrument is connected must be freely
accessible at all times.
 Unplug the instrument from the mains during thunderstorms, or if the
instrument is not used for extended periods of time.
 Make sure that the power cord does not cause a trip hazard.
 Avoid bending or stretching the power cord.
 If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced.
 Never connect the cord to the socket if you have wet hands.
 Risk of electric shock! Never operate the instrument if the cord is damaged.
Do not allow the cord to come into contact with hot surfaces, naked flames,
sharp edges, water or other liquids.

2.6.3 Operation
 The instrument must only be operated by persons who are familiar with the
risks and features of the instrument.
 Be careful with flammable liquids! Only qualified employees are allowed to
handle flammable liquids.
 In the event of a fault, disconnect the instrument from the power supply
immediately.
 Never leave the instrument to operate unsupervised.
 Never immerse the cord and instrument in water.
 Never touch an electrical instrument if it has fallen into water. Disconnect
the instrument from the power supply immediately.
 Only operate the instrument using the accessories supplied. The use of other
parts may cause accidents.
 In order to prevent the risk of electric shock, do not remove the covers and
panels under any circumstances. There are no parts inside that can be
repaired by the user. Repairs must only be carried out by an authorized
specialist.
 Do not ignore warnings on the display or warning signals. Please read the
manual or call our representative if you are not sure what to do.
 Do not cover the ventilation slots. Place the instrument so that proper
ventilation is guaranteed.

Please keep this box. You might need it some-day to ship the instrument back to us
for service.

6 Installation

CAUTION, Electric short cut!


Danger of electric short cut in the instrument.
When the instrument was exposed to low temperatures before powering up the unit,
leave it for a while for room temperature equilibrium. Condensations inside the
instrument can cause an electric short cut when turning on.

Connect to mains
1 Place the instrument on a vibration free solid surface.
2 Connect the power supply cable to the power inlet (14) on the rear panel
of the instrument and the mains voltage.
Install waste container (8)

1 Screw the lid on the waste container.


2 Put the outlet tube (7) in the hole of the lid.
3 Put the waste container near the outlet.
4 Screw the outlet tube on the outlet.

Install sample inlet for automatic filling (3)

WARNING, Risk of injury!


Risk of injuries caused by toxic substance.
Do not drink the sample!
Be careful when handling with flammable and corrosive substances.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
1 Fill sample in the sample container.
2 Put the flexible filling tube into the inlet (3).

6.1 DC/AC Power converter


Installation with car battery:
1 Connect the instrument with the supply cable to the power converter on
one of the AC outlets.
2 Connect the power converter via plug to the cigarette lighter slot in the
car.
3 Turn on the power converter by switching the On/Off switch.
4 Turn on the instrument.
5 The instrument is ready for operation.

6.2 External keyboard


For service work or if you want to insert e.g. sample names with a keyboard, connect
an external keyboard to USB-Interfaces (11) on the rear panel of the instrument.

6.3 Printer
Connect a postscript printer to an USB-Interface (11) on the rear panel of the
instrument.

6.4 LAN interface


For service work and data transfer connect a LAN cable to the interface (9) on the
rear panel of the instrument.

7 Concept of the MINISCAN IR VISION

7.1 Measuring methods


The MINISCAN IR VISION is an FTIR spectrometer. In the IR VISION a method is
some piece of algorithm that gets some result out of the raw data (i.e. the IR
spectrum) or some pre-processed data. The instrument differentiates between
different types of methods:
1. PLS
2. k-Matrix
3. Direct
4. Arithmetic
5. Cluster Analysis

Corresponding examples for the above types are the following methods:
1. RON, MON, T50 ...
2. Ethanol, Toluene, ...
3. FAME, EHN ...
4. AKI = (RON+MON)/2 and more complex calculations
5. All

Different method types require different corresponding calibration procedures like


the following:
1. Fuel groups and trained PLS vectors
2. Base spectra of components in a typical matrix, gain and offset
3. A defined peak height or peak area, gain and offset
4. Built on results of the other 3 method types. Typically, hard coded in the
analyzer
5. No calibration

7.2 Fuel Groups


Fuel groups are only required for the first method type, the PLS.

A good fuel group for Gasoline should contain 100+ samples of normal, super and
special finished in one group to get better statistics for the PLS.

A good fuel group for Gasoline should not contain


 a mixture of low/no ethanol and high ethanol fuels. For high ethanol fuels a
separate group should be created.
 a mixture of base gasolines and finished gasolines. For virgin/base gasolines
or naphtha a separate group should be created.

For information on the calibration of specific parameters please review the Section
9.4.6.

Flammable liquids should only be used by qualified employees. These substances
should be used with constant regard to the danger they pose to life and property.
Under normal circumstances they should always be used in a fume-hood away from
possible sources of ignition. For further information read the safety data sheet of the
substance.

8.1 Common Description


8.1.1 User Interface
MINISCAN IR VISION has Linux® Software preinstalled. The instrument
incorporates a big 10” color touch-screen for easy menu navigation. The user
interface has been designed by including ergonomic aspects, with button sizes big
enough to navigate by using fingers instead of a stylus or a pen. Thus, the risk of
scratching the touch-screen surface is minimized and the lifetime of the
touchscreen optimized.

8.1.2 Login
To operate the analyzer, please login at the first menu page. There is no factory set
password, please read the password section to setup a user-specific password.

A warning message appears if saturation is detected and the sample needs to be
diluted.

Press:
 Click "OK" to stop the measurement and dilute the sample. No result is
displayed.
 Click "IGNORE" to ignore the warning. A result of the measurement of the
undiluted sample is displayed. All results that are affected by saturation are
marked in red.

NOTICE
If dilution is required but ignored, measurement results affected by saturation may be
wrong and are marked in red.

NOTICE
For samples with a concentration exceeding 25% FAME content, a dilution warning is
very likely, because the FAME absorption band of the 0-7% FAME method is in
saturation. Values determined by the 7-40% FAME method are not affected, the
warning can be ignored.

To dilute the sample, use n-Dodecane volumetrically in the concentration 1:4 (4


parts n-Dodecane).

Before starting a diluted measurement, turn “Diluted on”. The dilution button is only
visible, if a n-Dodecane reference spectrum is stored in the analyzer.

After a diluted measurement, the instrument will switch to regular mode. To


perform another diluted measurement, turn “Diluted on” for the next measurement.

If the absorption spectrum is still in saturation after dilution, no further dilution can
be performed.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
If a sample is diluted, properties predicted from undiluted samples like RON/MON,
Cetane Number, Vapor Pressure or Distillation no longer yield a correct value. If you
plan to measure diluted samples more frequently, create a sample group with diluted
samples and choose this group for property prediction.

[Link].2 Second Cell Measurement


To determine low concentrations of components in a sample, a measurement with
the second cell can be performed. The second cell offers higher resolution, but the
spectrum will more likely have saturated regions. Therefore, on the second cell the
saturation warning is disabled. For custom created methods be sure that the
spectral region of the method does not overlap with a region affected by saturation.

To start a measurement with the second cell, toggle the "IR"-button until it says
"Cell 100 µm" in the Measurement Menu and press "Start".

[Link].3 Two Cell Measurement (GB/T 33648)


For certain methods it is required to run a measurement through the IR cell and
afterwards through the 100 µm cell.
Example: Anilines according to the Chinese GB/T 33648 standard require to measure
through a 100 µm cell. In contrast, all calibration measurements that are used for
PLS prediction are measured with the IR cell.
Thus, in a two-cell measurement, two measurements are done after each other:
First, the IR cell is used to measure regular fuel parameters. Then the
measurement is run through the 100 µm, to yield results according to GB/T 33648.

NOTICE
If a two cell measurement for Aniline measurement has been selected, only the
results from the 100 µm cell are shown, whereas results from the IR cell are
[Link] perform an Aniline measurement through the regular cell, please
reactivate the Aniline methods via the Parameter Menu.

According to EPAs complex emissions model VOC can be calculated in the IR VISION.

To provide a VOC calculation, some sample characteristics must be set prior to the

Before measuring the sample, its density is checked. The density value can cause a
warning or an error for unusual values. The measurement can be continued in both
cases.
Warning Density values between 550 kg/m³ to 650 kg/m³ and between 1000
kg/m³ to 1200 kg/m³.
Error Density values lower than 550 kg/m³ or higher than 1200 kg/m³.

1 High water-vapor content. A three-drops-icon is displayed.

the affected parameters are displayed in red.

8.2.2 Calibration: Analyzer Preparation for Measurements

NOTICE
For information on the calibration of specific parameters please review the
Section 9.4.6.

[Link] Setting up the IR VISION for Calibration Measurements


Before every calibration measurement and/or correlation calibration measurement
for PLS methods to generate or adapt existing database, the performance of the
instrument must be checked and optimized to guarantee best measurement results
for references, calibration and correlation. It is mandatory to perform the below
described steps directly before recording the measurements.

[Link].1 Procedure
To ensure that a measurement meets the requirement for the PLS calibration we
recommend going through the following steps prior to your database build-up.
1 Let the Instrument warm up for at least 10 minutes and max. 20 min.
2 Go to Main Menu → Instrument Setup → Maintenance → Auto Adjust Mirror.
3 Press the "Start Adjust" button.

[Link].2 Data-Check after measurements


For consistency in your database we also strongly recommend discarding any
measurement that was not recorded 100% correctly. That also implies mistakes that
may have been made before the actual measurement, e.g.:
 Bad sample preparation
 Air bubbles in the filling tube
 Unreadable labels
 Unknown units in the certificate of analysis for some parameters
 Unknown reference method
 Etc.

8.2.3 Calibration of methods (Concentration)


The most important methods are factory calibrated already. The following procedure
shows how to calibrate or re-calibrate a method.

1 Switch on the instrument with the main switch (13) on the rear panel.
2 Start the instrument with the On switch (8).
3 Wait for warming up until the status light turns green.
4 Prepare the analyzer according to 8.2.2 and start a mirror adjustment
(intensity must be more than 6 million).

[Link] Preparation of calibration samples


1 For Gasoline oxygenate calibration use either Naphtha (base gasoline,
without oxygenates) or a reference fuel with known oxygenate content.
For FAME in Diesel calibration, make sure your base Diesel is free of
any ester components.

2 Use this fuel to mix your calibration matrix. A calibration matrix must
have at least five different concentrations and shall cover the expected
concentration range. Concentrations should be measured in w%.

3 Example: To calibrate FAME in Diesel (0-7%), use a calibration matrix


that has at least five samples with various FAME content (0%, 2%, 4%,
6% and 7%).

Make sure that in this method the values are: Quad = 0, Gain = 1 and Offset = 0.
Note down the current Min and Max values.

Press "Save" to confirm the new method settings.

Return to the Measurement Menu and record the calibration samples like
regular samples. If needed set your pyrosensor stabilization cycles and sample
scans to 4 and the rinsing cycles to 3.

Change to the Result Details Menu
Main Menu → Results → Details
The number that is displayed as the method's result is the raw value. Use these raw
values to calculate the new gain and offset (e.g. by using Microsoft® Excel). It is
recommended to use a linear trend line (quad ≡ 0).
Return to the Method Edit Menu
Main Menu → Instrument Setup → Calibration → Methods
enter the new gain and offset and restore the min and max values. Finally press
"Save".

needed calibration substances can be purchased from Reagecon. These samples are
mandatory for the calibration.

Grey text: Measurement or value must be entered. A click on the pre-
defined Reagecon sample name opens a dialog to select the

numpad to enter the reference value.
Black text: The value is pre-defined and should not (but can be) changed.
Blue text: Caption of the Reagecon sample. In the right cell, the
corresponding measurement must be selected.
Green BG: Validation measurements.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Concentration values are always displayed in w% and must be entered in w%.

Check the Log and Plot tab for the result of a calibration.

Press "Create Certificate" (5) to save the calibration certificate as HTML file in the
FTP download folder.
To download the certificate, an FTP connection must be established. The file name of
the certificate is "Certificate_serialnumber.html".
If plugged, the certificate is also saved to the USB-flash drive.

8.2.4 Calibration of new samples (Prediction)


Many fuel properties cannot be measured directly. These properties are predicted
based on spectral information from calibration samples stored in a database.
Increasing the number of samples in the database improves the prediction quality.
The Training Menu is used for two purposes:
 Add characterized samples to groups (Measurement)
 Integrate groups into correlation models (Training)

8.2.7 How to improve results for predicted properties


To check the quality of the prediction methods, you can record a reference sample
and compare the reference values with the results values of the instrument. If the
prediction is not meeting your expectation, you can take certain steps to improve it.

groups from methods, to improve the prediction.

[Link] Step 2: Add new calibration data


Prediction typically improves if more samples with known properties are added to
the database. Please take care that the following conditions are being met before
adding new calibration samples:

To improve the prediction, it is of utmost importance that the known properties of


the calibration samples have been accurately determined (e.g. by an accredited
laboratory or by testing the calibration sample with referee methods).

50 samples are at minimum required for creating a new standalone calibration


group. Ideally, a training set should contain 100 to 150 samples.

Please make sure that your sample set uses roughly the same range you want to
test in e.g., if you plan to test RON 95 samples, it will not work with RON 92-93
calibration samples. Extrapolation is not allowed for PLS methods. If the calculated
result value is outside of the training set´s range, then the result is undefined.

Create a new group for your calibration samples (refer to the section [Link].1 for
creation of a new calibration group). A new group is per default unlocked and
ensures the user can always add calibration samples to this group.

1 Start a new calibration measurement

To create a new method, follow these steps:


1 Download a full backup from your IR VISION
2 Start the IRDB Tool software on your PC (see IRDB Tool manual)
3 Load the IR VISION full backup in the IRDB Tool. We recommend
working on a local copy of the full backup.
4 Go to the methods manager to create a new method
5 Create a new method (please refer to the IRDB Tool manual on how to
create the new method)
6 Save the method and upload the full backup on the IR VISION

9.2 Measurement Menu

Edit Sample Name / Sample Type

Type a sample name and choose between fuel types.

Diluted On / Off

Select, if sample is diluted.

Cell IR / 100 µm Cell / IR &100 µm

Select, if you want to perform a standard measurement (1) or use the 100 µm (2) or
run a combination measurement of IR and 100 µm cell (3).

VOC (Gasoline measurements only)

Insert parameters for VOC calculation.

Profiles/Parameter

Select a profile with a click or go to the Parameter Menu with a long click.

Measurement Settings

Go to the Measurement Settings Menu.

Repeats

Select the number of repeat measurements, the sample name is adjusted


automatically. Auto-filling must be turned on. Press the "Back" button in the waiting
time between measurements to abort the repeat cycle (waiting indicated by a small
progress bar).

Start

Start the measurement. If the Start button is displayed italic a new reference is
recorded prior to the sample measurement.

9.2.1 Parameter Menu


Main Menu → Measurement → Profiles/Parameter (long click)

1 Select the parameters to be shown in the result details menu. Use the
buttons below to navigate between the pages.

Green light: Parameter is shown.


Red light: Parameter is hidden.

2 Sort parameters by fuel type, selection, name, unit and sort key.
3 Select the displayed result unit.
4 Edit the sort key. Parameters in the Result Details Menu are sorted acc.
to the sort key
5 Name of the current profile

Select / Deselect All

Select / Deselect all parameters in the table.

Load

Load a profile. The selection is applied automatically.

Save the current selection as a profile. The selection is applied automatically.

Delete

Delete a profile.

Apply

Apply the current selection.

NOTICE
Density units can only be selected in the Results Details Menu.

9.2.2 Measurement Settings

Temperature Control

Activate or deactivate the temperature control during the measurement. Note that in
the Measuring Menu the nominal temperature is displayed. The real temperature is
displayed in the Results Details Menu.

Density Temperature Unit

Select between degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit for the displayed measurement


temperature. Temperature units for result values (e.g. IBP, T90) can be set
individually for each method. See 9.2.1.

Fill method

Choose the fill method: Manual with glass syringe or automatic with filling tube and
Luer connector.

Delete current reference measurement

A new reference measurement will be automatically started before the next run.

Cluster Analysis

Activate or deactivate the cluster analysis feature. With the button you can
change the group assignment.

Density Temperature

Select, which density temperature shall be shown in the result. The density will be
recalculated using the given fuel specific expansion coefficient.

Expansion Coefficient

Select/Change the fuel specific expansion coefficient.

Rinsing Cycles and Scans

Change rinsing cycles, scan count and pyrosensor stabilization count.

9.3 Rinsing

Rinse the instrument if a switch from Diesel /Jet to Gasoline samples or vice versa is
performed. Or in case samples containing a high amount of FAME have been
measured.
Use a new sample or solvents to rinse the instrument.

Fill Method

Change the rinsing and fill method from Automatic to Manual (Syringe) or from
Manual to Automatic.

Empty

Start emptying the cells in the instrument. Ensure that a waste container is
installed. If the process is finished, "Finished emptying cells" is displayed.

Rinse

Start rinsing the cells in the instrument. If the process is finished, "Finished rinsing
cells" is displayed. In manual filling mode, the instrument valves are opened to allow
users to perform a manual rinsing using a syringe.

9.4 Overview

The results menu lists the results, details and spectra from fuel measurements. If a
GB/T two cell measurement has been performed, a (GB) suffix will appear after the
sample name (1).

You can:
 navigate through the pages with measurement results
 show details of a result
 save selected normal measurements' or correlation measurements' results
to an USB-drive or to the internal hard drive. If no selection is made, all
results are saved.
 delete selected results

Details

Select, which two properties should be shown in the measurement overview list.

Customer / Calibration-Measurements

Switch between customer results and instrument calibration data.

Save

Save selected or all measurements' results to an USB-drive or on the internal hard


drive.

Columns

Select, which two properties should be shown in the measurement overview list.

Delete

Delete selected measurements.

NOTICE
Do not delete calibration data in this menu, unless it is required. Deleting calibration
data will severely affect the precision of property prediction.

You may configure your results lists by clicking on "Columns".


Select two properties you want have listed in addition to fuel type, date and sample
name.

9.4.2 Results Details


Main Menu → Results → Details

On the top you see the measurement's metadata that is date, sample name, fuel
type, temperature, density and user that was used for testing.
The individual properties are listed in the table below. Use the navigation buttons to
see all properties.

Graphics

See the absorption spectrum of the sample.

Save

Save data from this menu on the connected USB-drive and the internal hard disk
(Path: /home/irv/ftp/export/ ). Please wait, depending on the amount of data
transferred, this may take a few minutes.

Print

Print data from this menu. The HTML printer also prints to the internal instrument
folder /home/irv/ftp/reports/ so that users can access printed reports from the
analyzer.

Next Measurement

Start the next measurement.

Recalculate Properties

Recalculate the properties of the result.

You can change the upper and the lower limit of a method in the Method Edit Menu.

9.4.5 Goodness Parameter and Quality Parameter (for PLS methods and
cluster analysis)

The Goodness Parameter (%) is a measure for the similarity of the measured
sample, when compared to the samples that are used for the prediction. It
determines how good a new sample fits to the samples in the groups assigned to a
method (e.g. RON).
Thus, the Goodness Parameter indicates, how good a result fits to the underlying
prediction model. 100% indicates the maximum distance of a spectrum, when
compared to all samples of a group assignment. A result that shows a Goodness
Parameter higher than 100% is outside of the current group assignment, and the
result must be treated with care. A result with a Goodness Parameter lower than
100% indicates that the spectrum is inside the current group assignment.

Let us say there are 3 groups (United States, China, Russia) assigned to the method
RON and you have recorded two unknown gasoline samples. Sample A has a
Goodness values of 36% that means it fits to the three assigned groups and you can
assume that the prediction will work. Sample B has a Goodness value of 127% which
means that it is further away from the center than the furthest sample of the

assigned groups thus outside of the prediction model. The predicted RON value of
this sample must be treated with care.
For cluster analysis results the Quality Parameter (CA) is used. The CAx value is
scaled from the best (CA1) to the worst (CA5) match of the database. Depending on
the fuel type, the Quality Parameter can be:

Let us say there are 3 groups (United States, China, Russia) assigned to the cluster
analysis and you have recorded two unknown gasoline samples. Sample P has the
Quality Parameter CA1 that means that a very close spectrum was found in the
database thus the fuel properties must also be very similar and are assigned to
sample P. Sample Q has no matching spectrum within the maximum allowed
gasoline distance of CA3 thus no fuel properties can be assigned and the result
values are calculated with the measuring methods of type 1-4 (see 7.1).

NOTICE
The Goodness Parameter is only available for parameters calculated with PLS. Other
parameters and parameters that yield physical impossible figures will show as "-".

NOTICE
The Quality Parameter is only available for parameters found by the cluster analysis.

NOTICE
Recalculation of results will take longer for IR VISION versions 2.2.0 and above
because the Goodness Parameter needs serious calculation power.

Press "More" to go to the second Maintenance Menu.

Before the self-test can be started, a flask containing 50ml cyclohexane must be
connected to the inlet.
A self-test can be run as a full test or a spectral test.

Actuators displayed italic do not have any controlling mechanism like a light barrier
or a Hall sensor. In this case only the software and the electrical part can be tested.

To be sure that their work properly one must watch them moving / hear them
clicking.

Some test must complete successfully before the next test can start. If this is not the
case, the self-test stops at the failed step.

Main Menu → Instrument Setup → Maintenance → Auto Adjust Mirror

Check

Check the spectrometer intensity of the system.

Start Adjust

To adjust the intensity, select "Start Adjust". Intensity values will change their
color to help to judge, if the intensity is good enough for measurements.

Intensity color code:

BLACK Intensity is too low, no measurement can be performed. During a


measurement error code #1101 will be displayed.

RED Intensity is low, mirror adjustment is highly recommended.

YELLOW Intensity is acceptable for standard measurements, but no


calibration measurement should be performed.

GREEN Intensity is good.

Main Menu → Instrument Setup → Maintenance → Cell Check

Start / Abort

Start / Abort the cell check. Follow the instructions shown on the screen. For cell
flushing Grabner Instruments recommends using a [Link] mixture of Acetone,
Toluene and Ethanol. Repeat flushing until the required cleanliness is achieved.

NOTICE:
This procedure requires manual filling from syringe with a cleaning solution and dry
air. "OK" indicates that the reference test passed and the cells are clean.

Main Menu → Instrument Setup → Maintenance → More → Backup

Backup the database in regular intervals to an USB device.


1 It is required to switch the analyzer to English language before downloading
or restoring a backup.
2 Attach a USB device. Wait until "Target Medium" switches to USB.
3 Select Full Backup or Core Backup to start the backup process.

Full Backup

A full backup will also backup spectral data, which will take a while.
A full backup from the instrument with the serial number 23-530-0008 will create a
folder with a time stamp: IR3_EXPORT_23-530-0008_2013_6_27_15_11_52.
It is recommended to use a USB 3.0 flash drive.
Core Backup - Service work only

A core backup will only backup calibration, settings and results.


Restore

To restore a full backup, rename the folder from "EXPORT" to "IMPORT" and remove
the time stamp from the folder´s name. When working with the IRDB Tool the folder
is automatically renamed.
Example: "IR3_EXPORT_23-530-0008_2019_xxxx" to "IR3_IMPORT_23-530-0008".
Load the import file on a USB-device, attach it, select "Restore" and follow the
instructions.

NOTICE
A full backup is required for service and the IRDB Tool.

If the full backup restore procedure crashes do not try to repeat it. The previous state
is stored internally and can be restored by the Grabner service team.

[Link].1 Update from version 2.0 to 2.1 – Read carefully


We are continuously working to improve our analyzer. The update to version 2.1
includes some very important improvements to measurement accuracy for specific
methods. Consequently, these methods must be recalibrated and retrained after the
update.

NOTICE
A number of methods is affected from the version 2.1 method update and need to be
recalibrated after the update. If you do not plan to recalibrate your analyzer, please
do not update to version 2.1!

After update to 2.1, please follow this procedure before you use the analyzer

Error Only errors are listed.


Warn Errors and warnings are listed (default setting).

Some fuel properties cannot be measured directly from the spectrum. These
properties are predicted based on spectral information from calibration samples.
Increasing the correlation database will improve measurement results.
The Correlation Calibration menu is used for two purposes:
 Add newly characterized samples to groups to optimize prediction
 Integrate new samples into correlation models (Training)
Main Menu → Correlation Calibration → (Select Cell) → Select Fuel Type

New Calibration Measurement

Add a sample from the region with known properties to your custom group or to a
preinstalled group

Correlation Group Assignment

Add/Remove a fuel group to/from a method.

Type a known value for the property with the virtual numpad.

Unit

Always choose a unit for any property. For unitless values like RON the "empty" unit
must be selected.

If wrong reference values are entered, the MINISCAN IR VISION uses these values for
calibration. A calibration with wrong reference values inevitably leads to wrong result
values.

stored in the directory /home/irv/ftp/export in csv- format, labeled with a

9.8 IRDB Tool: Merge & Manipulate Databases and Methods


The IRDB Tool is a software which allows to merge and manipulate databases from
the MINISCAN IR VISION instruments. Basic functions of the tool are:

 Merge Manager: Analyze and merge databases from different instruments


 Group Manager: Create groups and move measurements
 Methods Manager: Manipulate methods or create new methods
 Methods Optimization Manager: Optimize a methods parameter

After a license key for the IRDB Tool has been purchased, the software is available

9.8.1 Using IRDB Tool to move databases from IRXpert to IR VISION

Databases collected with the IRXpert can be transferred to the IR Vision analyzer.
Download a full backup of your IRXpert and your IR VISION analyzer. Use the IRDB
Tool to merge the IRXpert full backup into the IR VISION full backup.

It is highly important to notice that


 A full backup merge from IRXpert 1.12 is only possible to IR VISION 2.0
 A full backup merge from IRXpert 1.13 is only possible to IR VISION 2.1

Cleaning

10 Cleaning

CAUTION! Damage to instrument!


Risk of electric short cut!
Disconnect the instrument from the power supply before cleaning.
Wait until the instrument has cooled down.
Never immerse the instrument in water.
Never clean the central unit housing under running water.
Make sure that no water gets into the central unit housing.
Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents, brushes with metal or nylon bristles, or
sharp or metallic cleaning objects such as knives, hard scrapers or similar.

CAUTION!
Do not use cleaning agents that could cause a hazard as a result of reaction with the
used probe material; the manufacturer or his agent is to be consulted if there is any
doubt about the compatibility of cleaning agents!

10.1 Touch Screen


Clean the Touch Screen with a soft microfiber cloth.

10.2 Housing
Clean the housing with a damp cloth.

10.3 Rinsing the instrument


See also chapter 9.3.

10.3.1 Rinsing with cleaning mixture


A simple yet very effective way to clean the cells and improve the intensity in the IR
VISION is to rinse the instrument with a solvent. A good solvent to clean residuals is
a mixture of roughly ⅓ Acetone, ⅓ Toluene and ⅓ Ethanol, but any solvent can be
used. To dry the cell, it is recommended to finally rinse with n-Pentane, as this will
evaporate very fast.

CAUTION!
Do not use cleaning agents that could cause a hazard as a result of reaction with the
used probe material; the manufacturer or his agent is to be consulted if there is any
doubt about the compatibility of cleaning agents!

11 Maintenance

11.1 Oil filling


Change to the Filler Menu.
Main Menu → Instrument Setup → Maintenance → More →
Factory Calibration → Filler and Valves

Set the piston position to "0" (you can either use the spin box buttons or a USB
keyboard) and press the "Goto Pos" button. If the analyzer's filling method is set to
Automatic you can also use the "Rezero" button.

Check the oil level on the left side of the instrument.

Use the 2 mL syringe to fill oil up until the bottom reservoir of the oiler is filled (1).

11.2 CO2 peak too high – spectrometer evacuation with pump


If the concentration of CO2 in the spectrometer is too high, the instrument will give a
warning or report an error, which prevents further measurements. Attach the
vacuum pump to the rear side of the instrument to evacuate the spectrometer and
reduce the level of CO2. It is important that an instrument that frequently reports too
high levels of CO2 is sent to Grabner for service.
