They had probably noticed that growing the same crop year after year was burdening ( laden/ load) the soil. The nutrients in the soil were exhausted, and the land soon became infertile. After several years, crops that once grew well would begin to grow poorly in the same fields. At some point, farmers discovered that changing crops grown on the same land helped restore lost nutrients. During the Middle Ages, farmers developed a three-year crop rotation cycle. They sowed (planted) rye or winter wheat during the first year followed by oats or barley in the second year. During the third year, the land was left fallow, or unplanted. After one year of rest, the land was planted afresh with rye or winter wheat. By rotating crops in this way, farmers discovered that land that had formerly become infertile was now productive. Crop rotation not only helps renew soil nutrients, but it is also an effective tool in pest control. When problems with pests recur repeatedly, researchers try to find ways to limit the damage done by harmful insects and bacteria. Changing crops effectively helps to break pests life cycles by taking away their food source. 29. What does it mean to refer to a discovery as singularly important? C.
