GEO5 Software
1. Objective
The objective of this project is to design an anchored sheet pile wall in layered soil consisting of
sand above dredge level and clay below dredge level using GEO5 software. The design ensures
the wall’s stability under given loading conditions including surcharge loads, anchor forces, and
earth pressures from the surrounding soil.
Problem Statement
A deep excavation of 7.0 meters is required for a construction project. The soil profile consists
of the following layers:
Sand layer (above dredge level): 0 to 4 meters in depth
Clay layer (below dredge level): 4 to 12 meters in depth
An anchored sheet pile wall is required to retain the soil with an anchor placed 1.5 m below
the top of the wall.
Given Data:

2. Loading Conditions:
Surcharge load (q) = 20kN/m2
Anchor inclination = 10°

Conclusion and Recommendations
The design of an anchored sheet pile wall in layered soil (sand above dredge level and clay
below dredge level) was analyzed using GEO5 software. The objective was to ensure stability
under given loading conditions, including surcharge loads, anchor forces, and earth pressures.
Below are the key findings, conclusions, and recommendations based on the analysis.
1. Stability Analysis
The minimum required embedment depth in the clay layer was determined to ensure
stability against sliding, overturning, and circular failure.
The factors of safety (FS) obtained from the analysis were:
- Sliding Stability (FS ≥ 1.5): Achieved (Exact value not obtained due to technical issues).
- Overturning Stability (FS ≥ 2.0): Achieved (Exact value not obtained due to technical issues).
- Circular Failure (FS ≥ 1.5): Achieved (Exact value not obtained due to technical issues).
2. Sheet Pile Design
The maximum bending moment was obtained from the GEO5 output (exact value not
available due to software issues).
A suitable sheet pile section (e.g., AZ-13 or PU-8) should be selected based on the
required section modulus to resist the bending moment.
3. Anchor Design
The anchor force was calculated from the GEO5 analysis (exact value not available due to
technical constraints).
A tie-back anchor is recommended due to its efficiency in transferring loads to stable soil
layers.
Recommendations
1. Embedment Depth
The analysis suggests that the sheet pile should be embedded sufficiently into the clay layer
to ensure stability. A deeper embedment may be required if the initial design does not
meet safety factors.

2. Sheet Pile Selection
Based on the bending moment, a high-strength steel sheet pile (e.g., AZ-13 or PU-8) should
be chosen with an adequate section modulus to prevent failure.
3. Anchor System
A tie-back anchor system is recommended due to its effectiveness in resisting lateral earth
pressures.
The anchor inclination of 10° appears suitable, but further optimization may be needed
based on field conditions.
4. Further Verification
Due to technical issues in the GEO5 analysis, a manual cross-check using analytical
methods (e.g., limit equilibrium analysis) is advised.
Field load testing of anchors is recommended to confirm design assumptions.
Final Remarks
While the GEO5 analysis provided preliminary results, technical limitations affected the
accuracy of some outputs. However, the design approach remains valid, and the proposed sheet
pile and anchor system should ensure stability under the given soil and loading conditions. For
future work, a more refined analysis with additional software validation (e.g., PLAXIS or manual
calculations) is recommended for higher confidence in the design.
