INTRODUCTION

Transferring knowledge is equally important as generating knowledge. Knowledge


transferred in a down to earth manner will simplify the learning process and help the students
to retain what is taught and to recall learned lessons as and when needed.
Seminar is a common form of discussion employed in teaching nursing. Seminar is usually
used for teaching higher level students like post graduates, research scholars etc.

Seminar method

Meaning
A seminar as an instructional technique involves generating a situation among them
on a theme which is generally presented to the group by one or more members.

Definition
Seminar is an instructional technique of higher learning which involves paper reading
on a theme and followed by the group discussion to clarify the complex aspects of the
theme.

Aims and objectives of seminar method


This seminar method is utilized the higher objectives of cognitive and affective domain.

Cognitive domain
- To develop higher cognitive abilities.
- To develop the ability of responding in this manner would involve higher
cognitive actions.
- To develop the ability to seek clarification and defend the idas of others
effectively.

Affective domain
- To develop the feeling of tolerance to the opposite ideas of other.
- To develop the feeling of co operation with other colleagues and respect the ideas
and feeling of others.
- To develop the emotional ability among the participants of the seminar.
- To acquire the good manner of putting questions and answering the questions of
others effectively.

Role of different personnel


In organizing a seminar the following roles are performed
1. Organizer
2. President/ chairman
3. Speakers of the day
4. Participants
5. Observers

1. Role of organizers
- It is the responsibility of an organizer to plan and prepare the whole program
of the seminar.
- He decides the whole topic of the seminar and assigns the different aspect of
topic to different persons.
- The date, time and place are decided by him.
- He prepare total schedule of the seminar.
2. Role of president
- He should possess in-depth knowledge regarding the topic and it is his duty to
guide the seminar in a fruitful manner.
- Seminar begins with an introductory speed by the presidents.
- He encourages the participants to take part in discussion.
- At the end he has to summarize the discussion and may present his view point
on the theme.
- He has to give thanks to the speakers, guests, participants and observers.
3. Role of speakers
- They prepare the topic thoroughly and Xerox copies of the paper are prepared
and distributed among the participants before the seminar.
- The speaker should be ready to defend the questions.
- The speaker should have the tolerance of ant ideas or criticism of others.
- Success of seminar is largely determined by the performance of the speakers.
- Speakers are expected to present the relevant information in an interesting and
comprehensible manner with the help f suitable audio visual aids.
4. Role of participants
- There may be 25-40 participants in each sitting allowed.
- They have to prepare themselves well in advance and the study material issued
by organizers before the seminar.
- They have to utilize the discussion lesson by asking questions, seeking
clarification and expressing their viewpoints.
- Participants make the seminar very live and interesting.
5. Role of observer
- Some guest and observers are also invited and allowed to observe the activities
of the seminar.
- Generally they are not permitted to participated in the discussion
- They should be allowed at the end of discussion and present their observations
by permission of the chairman.

TYPES OF SEMINAR
On the basis of level or organization the seminar are of four type
1. Mini seminar
2. Major seminar
3. National seminar
4. International seminar

1. Mini seminar
- A seminar organized to discuss a topic in class is known as mini seminar.
- The purpose is to train the students for organizing the seminar and play
different roles.
2. Main/ major seminar
- Such seminars are organized at departmental level or institutional level on a
major theme
- All the students and staff members take part in such seminars.
- These seminars are organized weekly or monthly in departments.
3. National seminar
- A national seminar is organized by an association or organization at national
level.
- The secretary of the seminar prepared the schedule and functions for seminar.
4. International seminar
- The seminar conducted by an international organizations or agency is known
as international seminar.
- The theme of the seminar has wider aspects.
- E.g. globalization, atomic power, agreements, policies implementation etc

STEPS OF THE SEMINAR


The steps of the seminar method are classified into following three steps:
1. Pre seminar phase
2. Seminar phase
3. Post seminar phase

1. Pre seminar phase


- Selection of seminar theme and its sub-themes
- Selection of venue, date, time.
- The panel of specialists, subject experts, Chief Guests, Observers for seminar
must be prepared.
- The permission must be requested from the persons listed in the panel and
from their head offices to utilize their services for seminar.
- A circular regarding the seminar and its information must be prepared.
- The seminar circular must be circulated well in advance to the people (must
have the relevant knowledge about the theme of the seminar) who are able to
participate in the seminar.
- The selection of the paper presenter / speakers.
- A compendium of selected papers must be prepared by a expert committee.

2. Seminar phase
- Ensure the physical facilities (Stage settings, Seats, Audio-Visual equipments,
etc.) available for the participants of seminar.
- Welcome the Chief Guests, Chair persons of Technical session, Observers
and Participants of seminar.
- The compendium must be distributed to the participants before the beginning
of seminar.
- The seminar theme and its sub-theme need be explained.
- Paper presentation by providing appropriate Audio, Video equipments such as
Public Address System, Over Head Projector, LCD projector etc.
- At the end of seminar session, the seminar events will be briefed by the
Chairman of the seminar.
- Deliver of Vote of thanks to the Participants, Seminar Committees and all the
people who engaged in the seminar activities either directly and indirectly.

3. Post seminar phase


- Discussion
- Compilation of the restructured papers will be done by a panel of experts.
- The prepare compilation (Compendium) must be sent to the concerned firms,
institutes, Agencies, Government departments for further follow up activities.
- Finalization of Accounts must be done.
- The seminar can be evaluated.
- The objectivity of the paper presented, the view of audience also need be
evaluated.
- The evaluation of overall seminar process can be used for the study and
feasibility of forth coming seminars and its arrangements.

ADVANTAGES OF THE SEMINAR METHOD

1. It gives good motivation and learning experience.


2. Develop self reliance and self confidence
3. Inculcates the responsibility and co operative nature.
4. Develop the questioning skills.
5. Development of better learning habits.
6. This method is best for socialization.

LIMITATIONS OF SEMINAR METHOD

1. It can’t be organized on all the content of subject matter.


2. During discussion group are formed two ideas anti ideas on the theme.
3. When the seminar is being organized the persons who speak too much dominate
the discussion and do not provide opportunities to others to take part in the
discussion.
4. Time management is difficult.
5. Unnecessary gossips among participants may deteriorate the scope and objectives
of the seminar.
