SECTION D
The following questions are case -based questions. Each question has an internal [2x4=8]
choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully and answer the
questions that follow.
29. Nucleophilic substitution reaction of haloalkane can be conducted according to both
SN1 and SN2 mechanisms. However, the mechanism is decided based on some factors
such as structure of haloalkane, and properties of the leaving group, nucleophilic
reagent and solvent. No matter which mechanism the nucleophilic substitution reaction
is based on, the leaving group always leave the central carbon atom with electron pair.
This is just opposite of the situation that nucleophilic reagent attacks the central carbon
atom with electron pair. Therefore, the weaker the alkalinity of the leaving group is, the
more stable the anion formed is and it will be easier for the leaving group to leave the
central carbon atom; that is to say, the reactant is easier to be substituted.
Answer the following questions:
[4]
(a) Differentiate between SN1 and SN2 mechanism.
(b) What is the product formed when chloroethane react with KOH?
(c)Which compound in each of the following pairs will react faster in SN2 reaction
with OH-?

30. Temperature has a marked effect on the rate of a reaction. For most of the reactions,
the rate of reaction becomes nearly double for every 100 rise in temperature. The effect
of temperature is usually expressed in terms of temperature coefficient. The
quantitative dependence of reaction rate on temperature was first explained by Swante
Arrhenius. Arrhenius proposed a simple equation known as Arrhenius equation. This
equation provides a relationship between the rate constant of a reaction and the
temperature of a system.
Answer the following
(a) The rate constant of a first order reaction increases from 2 x 10 -2 s-1 to 4 x 10-2 s-1 [4]
when the temperature changes from 300 K to 310 K. Calculate the energy of
