7TH MEETING ITALY DENMARK CYPRUS BELGIUM PORTUGAL GREECE

Vila Real is a city in northern Portugal located west of the port city of Porto and north of the Douro River. In order of population, Vila Real capital has roughly 25,000 in the urban parishes. Located at the converging point of two rivers it has always been a busy agricultural and commercial town, mainly based around the lucrative wine and port trade. Extensive areas are covered in pine forest. Granite and the manufacture of mineral waterthe waters of Vidago and Pedras Salgadas are nationally famousare two important industries. 2.567 students study at the Agrupamento Vertical de Escolas Diogo Co and 297 teachers teach in it. The Agrupamento includes 21 Kindergartens, 23 Primary schools and one high school. During our meeting we visited two Kindergartens, two Primary schools and the main school of Agrupamento Vertical de Escolas Diogo Co.

We visited classes in all schools, the main schools modern library, admired the school gardens and had teaching sessions. In the two Kindergartens that we visited we met parents and grandmothers who were helping make the carnival costumes the themes of which were taken from our project. The students welcomed us with songs and presents and we also watched a show with environmental content. As it is used we planted a cherry tree in the garden of a Primary school. The school and the Parents Association offered us tasteful meals. Finally, we visited Gimaraes, Braga and Porto. Last but not least we would like the students, he teachers and the parents of the Portuguese partner school for their hospitality.

Hi, we've just come back from a wonderful project visit in Vila Real, Portugal. We enjoyed our Portuguese partners very much: we had unforgettable opportunies to visit their Agrupamento Vertical de Escolas. Teachers and students have always shown us nice performances and beautiful craftworks. Parents and students were just wonderful with us, and gave us their genuine hospitality and friendship. Thanks Joao and the other magic people! It was nice to have teaching sessions with 14-year-old students. Pierpaola, the Italian teacher of Art, worked out an interesting lesson about design and recycled materials. Have a look at the following pictures. Amazing, aren't they?

Our students of 3rd H class are still working on this and soon they will study other sources of energy. We'll let you know. Of course our students are still exchanging letters and e-mail with their school mates in the different Countries. In particular they are now writing to Danish and Portuguese classes and will arrange video conferences. Great! Waiting for the next visit to Poland... see you soon! Patrizia Salutij

DENMARK
5th. grade worked with waste and recycling.

Sennels Skole

They discovered how important it is, that we all, in our households, recycle instead of just throwing things in the bin. Its not only magazines, newspapers, glass and cans its everything!! Plastic bags, of course, but also things made of plastic like toys, kitchen utensils etc. Big things like garden chairs etc very important! And if they are made of combined materials like metal and wood or plastic, its important to take them apart before recycling. Your mobile phones contains a lot of metal including gold and silver. If you send your mobile for recycling, your save not only water and co2 but also contribute to less mining. (there is enough silver in 3 mobile phones to make a finger-ring.)

Elektronic
If you return your mobile to recycling you can save nature from the equal of drive a light bulb in one and a half year + 280 ten liter buckets filled with water. If you do not recycles your mobile then you contribute with the destroy of the environment. by Rasmus and Sebatian, 5th

Glass
We got a project in science, the project was about recycling. Our topic was glass. If you put youre glass to recycling this happens: all the glass are put in the same room in wich they are cleaned then they are sorted and melted together 40% of broken glass and 60% of soda and chalk. You decide whether to continue to let the glass bottle live like glass and save 1 liter of water and electricity for a light bulb for 16 hours and 16 balloons filled with co2. by Majken kk, Pernille, Magnus and Josefine.

Metal
- If you recycle four chair legs of metal, you save the environment for 15 litre water and you save electricity equal to a 11 wats light bulb in 170 hour. If you throw the chair out, it come on cumbustion, after cumbustion you cant use it again because it is very bad quality. It takes 500 years to decompose aluminium in the nature. by Astrid and Natacha J

A (1litre) plastic bottle :

When it has been in plastic dispenser, it can be used 20 times, but then it is slightly damaged. It can also be used as a fleece jacket. Did you know, that there is a lot of plastic in many clothes? To make a new instead of re-using : you use electricity for a 11 watt lights bulb can glow for 90min. You waste 0,5litre of water. And two balloons filled with CO2. by Frederikke, Andreas, Jonathan and Maiken gb.

Paper
In science we had a theme about recycling. The topic our group worked with: paper! You take a magazine on 98 gram: If it was made of new fibers, rather than using old, it will cost extra 13 liter bottles of water and energy equivalent to

running a 11wats bulb in 40 hours.

Our

pupil council

made a monthly competition

with ideas for green tip of the month. All students at school can give a tip every month, and the pupil council have an award for the best.

Christmas cards and letters:

At Christmas time, all classes wrote cards to their friends in our partner countries. In February 4th,5th and 6th grades wrote personal letters for the children at partner schools.

6th grade worked with different themes:

Cooking for the climate: At cooking class (3 hours once a week) we discuss how to cook in a climate friendly way. We discuss personal health through healthy living and eating. We discuss what influence it has on our health, indirectly, how we choose our food. Do we eat mostly from our region or do we eat a lot of imported food, that needs transportation? Do we eat basically organic food or do we choose food that is grown with the use of fertilizers, pesticides etc. ? Its always your own choice. But we like to discuss this to get wiser on our own choices.

Bio-plastic Normally plastics are oil-based. It means, that you use oil from our underground to produce. Maybe not all kinds of plastic needs to be so long-life durable? We made experiments making bio-plastic from potato starch, glycerin and vinegar. Oil-based plastic takes 500 years to disappear in nature bio-plastic only 2-3 weeks!! And you can use it for a lot of things: plastic bags, kitchen utensils etc.

Issue 5

Page 9

We also made experiments on renewable energy. Building a simple windmill - you can see it on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnhMfXHMc6M (5th grade made the video) or on the common Comenius website. We also made experiments to find out about how well suncells works. We would like to show this and more to you all face-to-face on a web-cam-meeting. Ask your teacher!!

4th grade
Made designer chairs out of old boxes. We simply made a form, cut in big old boxes the same form, painted and folded. Voila!! Have a look, how nice they are:

A
Research for recycling at home
This year a new lesson was added in primary education with title Environmental Education. Students of the 6th grade prepared a research about recycling at home. At the research participated all students of the school. The results were disappointing as many of the students do not recycle properly. Only half of them recycle PMD and paper and most do not recycle glass, clothes or electrical appliances. Also very few make their own compost from organic litter. See all results in our website.

Hello from Cyprus

The Comenius program is a vital reality in our school and students are very willing to work for the program and learn from its activities. Our school has been member of Eco-schools for 10 years now. For the last 3 months students were studying about the project Litter less which has the aim to diminish litter at school and at home. All classes worked in order to accomplish all the activities of the action plan that was prepared. In this issue you can see all the products of the project but you can also see videos and other publications in our new website www.schools.ac.cy/aradippou1-dim-la Panikkos Xiourouppas - coordinator

Question 1: How many students recycle PMD at home?

Only half of the students recycle PMD at home.

Used Toys and Books Bazaar

A bazaar took place before Christmas. Children brought from home used toys and books that were in good condition and when all were gathered, a bazaar was made in the school yard. By this way we recycle many old toys and books that in other case most children would throw them in the bins. Many children also promised that they wouldnt ask for many toys for the Christmas as they already could buy toys and books in very cheap price. The fund was raised from this bazaar will be used for the installation of plastic grass in the yard.

Campaign for Recycling

Students of grade F after analyzing the results of the above questionnaire, decided to take action by sending informational leaflets at home. They decided to make their own publications. They design their own leaflets first by writing down all the important issues about how to deal with litter. They mentioned all ways of recycling but above all they emphasized the fact of diminishing litter and reuse them before sending them to recycling.

Adopting the park

Our school had adopted a park which is located next to our school. Its a very small park with some toys with few trees planted around and some toys inside it. Students of class C1 visited the park and pointed some of its problems like broken benches and toys, more planting of trees and the need of making the place safe for children. Follow the link to hear about these problems http://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=KIBUBFLrPew&feature=pl ayer_embedded
