Chapter/ Scene 1 Emotional Focus Neutral People Involved Deer Cloud and his band Task/Event/ Activity Deer Cloud is finishing painting for the day. He is losing the light. He goes back to camp, where they greet each other, eat, sing a little and go to sleep. The band awakens suddenly by the sound of falling rocks and thud, thunk! They rush to find the basket, and inside the dead woman. Aunt Hawk Feather! Witches must be about! They become terrified and sleep no more that night. Wailing and fear. Stone Face conducts Aunt Hawk Feathers funeral, but he leaves out an important song that the Powerful Ones require. Deer Cloud and several others are noticeably appalled. Stone Face mumbles and tries to cover the mistake. Deer Cloud is painting. He and Little Wolf talk about the Big Gathering, which starts tomorrow. Deer Cloud tells Little Wolf of his desire to help Fat Neck get a mate. Little Wolf asks about sorcerers. He worries something will happen during the big event. They leave to get ready and welcome guests. The clan gathers nuts during the day, jokes, visits, has a good time. Deer Cloud meets Cliff Swallows eyes, and she quickly looks away. Young people go to Rabbit Springs for courting and fun. Deer Cloud tries to steer Dove Call to Fat Neck, but she drifts back to Little Eagle. Emotional Focus Anticipation and awe

People Involved The clan, Deer Cloud and Cliff Swallow

Task/Event/ Activity The clan attends the Panther Wolf ceremony. All the clan shaman participate and their acolytes. Members of the Panther Wolf Society dance among the watchers, on the other side of the river. They are in charge of lighting fires and torches at various times, amplifying howls and chants, and acting out the panther wolf story. At the height of the ceremony in the high shelter, Rattlesnake approaches on a narrow ledge, carrying a torch. Suddenly, he falls, the torch sending showers of sparks as Rattlesnake falls to his death. Deer Cloud leads the others on the first peyote hunt. Dove Call and Sotol Woman help locate and identify the small cactus, remembering Grandmother White Rain Flowers long-ago stories. The group cuts some, and chews it. Then they sit in a circle and wait to see what happens. Wow! The visions of brilliant colors come, dancing in their heads. This experience lasts several hours. Deer Cloud thinks of Cliff Swallow. On the way back, they talk about how no ritual has yet been developed for this, but they feel there should be. They discuss the pros and consnasty taste, delicious visions. Fat Neck is coming back from checking his bees, when he overhears Stone Face plotting with Long Spear about how to take over Rattlesnakes position as head shaman of the clan. He plots with

Butchering and feasting. The people can hardly believe their good fortune. The five pilgrims secretly agree the peyote must be responsible for such good luck. They vow to find more as soon as possible. Explosion and Fire! The pilgrims and Snake Skin share suspicions of Stone Face and his sorcery. They are sure he was the cause of the fire. much glee from the adults. People eat honey and feast. Cliff Swallow and Deer Cloud share a little honey. Task/Event/ Activity Deer Cloud adds black dots to his story painting to represent peyote. He goes with Little Wolf to check his traps and snares for dinner. The pilgrims begin to formalize the peyote ritual Deer Cloud and Little Wolf come across Stone Face on a ledge. Deer Cloud kills him as Little Wolf watches. Little Wolf blurts out what happened to the band. The band discusses what to do. Long Spear is angry and vows revenge in disgust. Fat Neck speaks up for Deer Cloud, saying he has become a peyote shaman, to give the people a better way. Snake Skin agrees. Sotol Woman and Dove Call urge the others to elect Deer Cloud shaman because he can help the people. But this is not how it is usually done! Heated discussion and confusion. Deer Cloud decides to leave the decision to the people, and leaves for Cliff Swallows band. As he leaves, Fat Neck gives him a new name: Deer Tail, which means the power that brings the deer, the peyote, and the rain. By the river Near the edge of a canyon Sleeping shelter
