THE MaSTER pRoGRaMME The Master of Science programme is a two-year programme (120 Ec) for students with a BSc in industrial Design Engineering or a similar programme with equivalent competencies at the same level. The masters programme enhances and broadens the basis acquired in the bachelors programme and enables students to concentrate on one of six specializations. The programme is academic with the emphasis on design methodologies and problem-solving strategies based on a solid theoretical foundation. This principle is clearly reflected in the programme; although many courses include design assignments relating to realistic and topical themes, the goal is not only to develop a product but to extend and reinforce students understanding of design principles, theoretical concepts, and the interactions between products and product development processes. The specialization provides students with opportunities to experience and apply the latest developments in design tools and equipment (such as 3D-printing, 3D-scanning and virtual reality techniques). Each specialization consists of a specific programme with certain shared characteristics. approximately half the courses in a specialization are compulsory. Elective courses are chosen in close consultation with the specialization coordinator.

Elective courses enable students to add a personal focus to the programme and prepare them for their final thesis projects, which are individual projects usually undertaken in a commercial enterprise or in a university laboratory at Twente or another university. The aim is to enable the students to apply their knowledge and skills effectively at a level commensurate with an MSc graduate. SpEcializaTioNS MSc students can choose one of six specializations: architectural Building components Design Enigeering (aBcDE) cradle to cradle (c2c) Design and Styling (D&S) Emerging Technology Design (ETD) industrial Design and Manufacturing (iDM) Management of product Development (MpD) Architectural Building Components Design Enigeering (ABCDE) For almost one hundred years building materials in the construction sector have been produced in factories and then assembled to complete components on building sites. Thanks to the demand for flexibility and sustainability from the construction sector, developments in icT, and new materials and production methods, construction involving components has a bright future. Through constructing with components, the increasing complexities and high execution speeds that are demanded regarding the process of organizing the design and construction processes can also be addressed. Cradle to Cradle (C2C) in designing new products sustainability will play more and more an important role. a strategy to maximize the ability of industry to turn used materials into new products will be a central issue of the master specialization cradle to cradle. Following the biological system, technical loops of material can be developed in which products are optimized for reuse achieving a sustainable system of consumption and production. in this master specialization attention will be given to principles of reusability. Students learn principles and methodologies and will apply these in an industrial environment. Design & Styling (D&S) in industrial design engineering a designer has to play several roles. Sometimes the most important part of industrial design is the application of a new technique. Sometimes the development of a better user interface is more important. Most of the time, design is about the combination and integration of a lot of these aspects. However, styling always plays an important role. in the master specialization Design and Styling, attention is given to all aspects of product development but the main points are the styling and the design of emotional benefits. Emerging Technology Design (ETD) a lot of theoretical renewals and new technological principals are rarely applied because nobody translates them into a product or application. in this specialization students learn how to bring new and state of the art technology to the consumer market. The specialization is the generic term for all education programmes in which technology is the starting point of the design of (new) products. Each student chooses a certain technology (e.g. Biomedical Technology, Smart products, Fluid or Solid Mechanics, Material Science and Surface Technology) and studies the core principles and concepts as well as recent developments within this field. Besides the technology

courses, the students complete some general Design Engineering courses, with a focus on the integration of technology, market and human factors in designing. Examples are the integration of flexible solar cells or noise reduction treatments in (consumer) products. Management of Product Development (MPD) This specialization focuses on the organization of product development. Based on a profound understanding of the entire spectrum and the specific stages of product development, students learn to manage the product creation process and to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders (potential clients, producers and suppliers, technical and social experts etc.). The emphasis is on learning to systematize the product development process and to optimize the products life cycle. Industrial Design and Manufacturing (IDM) The specialization industrial Design and Manufacturing focuses on the entire process of product realization, taking a life cycle-oriented approach. This specialization is unique in that it integrates high-tech knowledge and skills in design and manufacturing, and other industrial engineering fields, such as quality management, marketing, production management and cost engineering. The design and manufacturing engineers of (major) companies primarily address and bear responsibility for product development, detailed product design, process planning, scheduling, parts manufacturing, assembly, inventory control and customer service. The programme is run jointly with the universities in aalborg (Denmark), Dortmund (Germany) and Strathclyde (United Kingdom). a period of study at one of these partner institutes forms an integral part of the programme. The programme therefore follows a strict time schedule and all the courses are compulsory. aDMiSSioN candidates with a BSc in industrial Design from the universities of Twente, Eindhoven and Delft automatically qualify for admission. candidates with academic qualifications in similar disciplines need to complete a personalized pre-masters programme worth 20 - 30 Ec based on experience. often, the pre-masters programme can be included as a minor in a bachelors programme. candidates with a BSc or equivalent degree from a foreign university can apply through the website, where additional criteria is also described. Graduates from Dutch HBo institutes qualify for admission after completing the pre-masters programme, an excerpt of the bachelors iDE programme with a study load of about 45 Ec. Further details about the pre-masters programme and the admission requirements can be found on the website. caREER opTioNS in general, graduates hold positions as product developers, designers, product engineers, design managers, usability consultants, brand managers, innovation consultants, etc. Many start their own enterprises. Before the programme became operational, a labour market survey confirmed that there is an urgent need in the Netherlands for engineers with the ability to integrate the contributions of various experts to produce development processes.

iNTERNaTioNal if you want to study abroad as part of your programme, that is no problem in industrial Design Engineering. The industrial Design and Manufacturing specialization, for instance, which is positioned between industrial Design Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, is offered jointly. iDE also has a regular exchange programme with some foreign universities outside Europe. Students of these partner institutes join in the iDE- programme and Dutch students meet the same students again in their home universities.
