MOV (Motor Operated Valve) - Field Troubleshooting Guide
Problem: Valve Not Operating (No Response to Command)
- Check power supply (AC/DC voltage at terminals)
- Verify control signal (remote/local selector switch)
- Inspect fuses or circuit breakers
- Check local/remote interlocks
- Confirm motor thermal overload is not tripped
Problem: Valve Operates in One Direction Only (e.g., Opens but Doesn't Close)
- Check limit switches (stuck or misadjusted)
- Verify torque switch wiring
- Inspect control wiring for broken or loose terminals
- Manually jog valve to verify motor operation in both directions
Problem: Valve Stops Midway
- Check if torque switch tripped prematurely
- Inspect valve for physical blockage
- Measure motor current draw for over-torque condition
- Check gear mechanism for jamming or excessive wear
Problem: Torque Switch Tripping Frequently
- Inspect valve seating area for obstruction or debris
- Verify torque switch settings (may be too low)
- Ensure valve is not over-tightening against stop
- Check actuator lubrication and gear alignment
Problem: No Feedback to Control Room
- Inspect limit switch contacts and continuity
- Check 4-20 mA position transmitter (if used)
- Verify signal wiring continuity and terminal tightness
- Inspect DCS/PLC input status
Problem: Manual Operation Not Possible (Declutch Failure)
- Ensure declutch lever fully disengages motor
- Verify no mechanical jam in gear train
- Check for interlock preventing manual override
Problem: Valve Operates Automatically Without Command
- Check for faulty remote signal (PLC/DCS logic error)
- Inspect wiring for short circuit or induced voltage
- Verify control system interlock logic
- Test control relay contact isolation
Preventive Maintenance Tips
- Periodically cycle valve fully (open/close)
- Clean and tighten terminals
- Lubricate gear mechanism
- Inspect electrical and mechanical components quarterly
- Log torque switch and limit switch settings
